NZ deserved to win the match. They were the stronger team and had many more chances than Bahrain. Roll on 2010- we may see some upsets.

I’m glad for New Zealand that they got through, however I do question the qualifying system. When you have teams in Europe such as Sweden, Czech Republic, Croatia and Turkey who don’t make it, I do feel that Bahrain or NZ should have to do something more to qualify – perhaps playing one of these European teams.
I acknowledge that gettting to a WC is a dream for countries like NZ I still believe that the WC should host the world’s best talent, even if it means making it harder for lower ranked sides to get in.

There was an extraordinary amount of quality about the NZ side. Strength to take the ball off Bahrain. Jaycee John was good/fast for Bahrain, but Nelsen, McGlinchey, Vicelich all were strong defenders.
Re white as opposed to all black, the uniform was white top, black shorts until some marketing deal 30 years back create all white with pin stripes, which became all white. Hence the All Whites are football and rugby remains the All Blacks.

There is a lot of soccer talent in new zealand but very low quality coaches. With a good coach brought from outside (spain, italy or even south america) and less inside soccer politics, new zealand soccer team would be as good as all blacks-new zealand rugby team. New Zealand needs to attract top soccer expert coaches rather than relying on local coaches who are just NOT up to the task. Bahrain is a week team and it is not surprising that NZ won Bahrain. Hope the World cup will be a good lesson for NZ soccer but i expect NZ coaches soccer will stay arrogant and ignorant as they have always been.
