Chelsea v Liverpool

Liverpool’s Javier Mascherano has reportedly agreed to a £100,000-a-week deal with Spanish champions Barcelona.
The Reds had previously rejected advances from Barcelona with regards to the Argentina international.

But according to The Sunday Express, Liverpool are now willing to listen to offers of up to £36million from Barca.

And according to another report by the same newspaper, the defensive midfielder wants the transfer to happen in January but the Reds intend to keep hold of him till the end of the season.

Mascherano currently earns around £60,000-a-week on Merseyside, with his contract due to expire in 2012, and has rejected offers of a new £90,000-a-week deal. (ESPN)

I hope to god this report is incorrect but I think there is a very real chance that Javier may have had his head turned by the potential interest shown by the Catalan giants. It’s fair to say that Mascherano’s first few games this season were overall pretty poor affairs with the usually impressive Argentine unable to dictate the play and consistently failing to halt the opposition attacks in the same way he managed so well last term.

However in recent weeks even when the team as a whole had failed to perform he and Lucas were actually doing their jobs pretty damn well and the hope was that Rafa had taken the midfielder to one side and had a quiet word with the former West Ham man, but at the same time he was seemingly unwilling to put pen to paper on a brand spanking new deal and that would have set the alarm bells ringing.

There will be some who think that it may not be such a bad thing to allow our midfield terrier to leave so that we can use the cash wisely, but in all likelihood Messrs Hicks and Gillett wouldn’t release all that cash and would probably keep it themselves but even if they did give all the cash to Rafa I don’t think we should even consider selling the 25 year old.
