Carlo Ancelotti closes in on Argentine sharp shooter.
Chelsea will push through a £40m deal for Atletico Madrid striker Sergio Aguero it was reported today.
The Argentine international has been a long term target for the Stamford Bridge outfit and it would appear that a deal will finally go through in January.
The report from The Telegraph suggests Chelsea will meet with the 21-year-old’s agent on Monday to thrash out a deal, which at £40m, would make him the most expensive signing in British football transfer history.
Chelsea are eager to do business in the winter transfer window, with a Fifa-imposed transfer ban due to take effect from next summer. Chelsea have lodged an appeal against the ban, but should it fail they will be unable to do any business for some time.
Aguero is one of the most sought after players in world football having impressed at Atletico over the last couple of seasons. The striker scored twice against Chelsea in the recent 2-2 Champions League draw (Independent)
The ongoing pursuit by Chelsea of Argentine’s rising star Sergio Aguero has been going on for some time and this source seems to suggest that a deal is set to be made between the player and the club so now it appears down to the La Liga side to see if the sum discussed is worthy of acceptance which appears to be the case.
Given the fact that the West London side’s transfer ban has only been suspended and not lifted completely, which is probably will be, they will be looking to make any substantial signings in January for fear of falling foul of FIFA and not having any option to purchase any players for some time.
Do Chelsea need another striker? Well with Didier Drogba and Nicolas Anelka both over 30 it does make sense to plan for the future and with the likes of Daniel Sturridge on the bench coming along nicely they will be looking for yet more youthful options for the future, such as Sergio ‘Kun’ Aguero.
