Talk of record signings leads inevitably to Manchester City. Mark Hughes’s latest scheme entails gazumping Tottenham and Bayern Munich in order to secure the services of Toulouse’s goal-scoring midfield achor, Moussa Sissoko. And then he’ll hire a private tutor for the gifted youngster, specifically Gennaro Gattuso. (Guardian)

Mark Hughes is looking to beef up his squad after a solid, if unspectacular, start to the season and both the players mentioned by this source are top quality and well worth considering a move for but what about the mountains of midfield talent already at the club?

Sissoko and Gattuso offer different attributes that would be welcome at any top six chasing Premier League side with the Toulouse man being a very promising prospect as an attacking midfielder with an eye for goal and Italian veteran Gattuso being the perfect defensive midfield option but take a look at who Mark Hughes already has to call upon in those positions. In Nigel De Jong City have an excellent player who is phenomenal at breaking down opposition advances and can use the ball effectively when he is in possession, the Eastlands outfit also has Vincent Kompany who can play the same role as well as at the centre of defence.

In terms of flair playing midfielders Hughes also has a fair few options with Stephen Ireland on his day one of the best in business so one wonders where any additions in these positions would fit. Perhaps the club would be better off investing in another centre back instead?
