Unsettled Liverpool winger Ryan Babel has revealed he could leave in January if he fails to establish himself in Rafa Benitez’s plans.
Babel is unhappy with his lack of first-team opportunities with the 22-year-old failing to hold down a place in the starting XI.
The Dutchman has been forced to content himself with a bit-part role at Anfield and he plans to hold talks with Benitez before the transfer window reopens in January to resolve his future.
“I have tried to talk to the manager but it isn’t of any use. I couldn’t really do anything with the feedback Benitez gave me,” Babel is quoted as saying in The Sun.
“We have agreed to look at my situation in the winter. If there’s no improvement then, I have to be honest, I want to be somewhere else.
“I don’t play a lot so I can’t be happy and I can’t cheer out loud. Sometimes I wonder how long I can sustain it but I will fight for my position – what else can I do?”
Babel, who will miss Tuesday’s vital Champions League trip to Debrecen through injury, is surprised he has not been afforded more chances in the side after impressing in his debut season at Anfield.
“Isn’t it unbelievable that in my first year I got chosen as Talent of the Year? And a season later I hardly play and without getting a proper chance.”
Babel, who represented Holland in Beijing last summer, added: “I don’t know if it has anything to do with my little trip to the Olympics. I know the manager wanted me to stay.”
However, the 22-year-old does not think Benitez has a grudge against him.
Babel explained: “I really don’t believe he is trying to get back at me. Every time me or my agent (Willie Haatrecht) have a chat with him he stresses I can’t leave and he believes in me. We have to trust he is telling the truth. Saying it is different to showing it.”Babel has confidence in his own ability and still believes he can make the right impression in a Liverpool shirt.
He added: “I have shown I can do it plenty of times. I know I could be further in my career but if nobody helps you, if they don’t make it easier for you, then it is difficult.” (BBC Sport)
Liverpool are reported to be showing a strong interest in talented young Holland winger Eljero Elia.
The 22-year-old only moved to Hamburg from FC Twente in his homeland in an £8.5million deal in the summer.
But he has already been linked with a possible switch to the Premier League following a series of impressive displays for club and country. (Sky Sports)
This latest bit of chat from Babel just re-opens the possibility of a swap move for Hamburg winger Elia who reportedly wouldn’t be averse to leaving the Bundesliga for the Premier League and it does appear that Ryan is talking himself into the Anfield exit he has been heading towards for a long time.
I think the Dutchman has got things a little mixed up though, he seems to be suggesting that he has shown enough to warrant a regular spot in the team when that is patently untrue. It is something of a vicious circle as clearly unless he gets a good run he won’t progress but given that the former Ajax man is approaching his fiftieth start for the club it would be churlish of the winger to suggest that Rafa is overlooking him.
The idea of bringing in Eljero Elia and seeing Babel going in the other direction, plus us probably having to give a little sweetener into the bargain, is one that would interest most Liverpool fans who have probably begun to get a little irritated by Ryan’s inability to perform.
