Well it was to be expected really, after finishing third and second respectively in the previous two years, Leo Messi deservedly was named the European Footballer of the Year for 2009. Having been instrumental in Barcelona’s incredibly treble success of last season, during which he netted an incredible 38 times, it was always going to be the Argentine’s year.
Pepe Guardiola will be pleased to see such a strong Barca presence in the overall standings which are calculated after votes are cast by a myriad of world renowned journalists. Six players from the Nou Camp made the overall list and there was a decent smattering of Premier League representatives as well with 11 players having played some part in the English top tier in the calendar year.
Perhaps the one player most harshly treated by the voters is Karim Benzema was the only player in the 30 man shortlist to get no points.
