Blackburn will check on the fitness of David Dunn, who missed the midweek win against Chelsea with a calf problem.
Boss Sam Allardyce is set to watch the match from the stands after recovering from heart surgery, with assistant Neil McDonald continuing in the dugout.
Liverpool will again be without Fernando Torres (groin), though he could make his comeback next week.
Philipp Degen is back from suspension, while captain Steven Gerrard is set to make his 500th appearance for the club.

Given Blackburn’s fantastic result midweek against Chelsea in the Carling Cup we could be in for a tough afternoon and this is one of those games we simply must get all three points from this match if we are to keep up our chances of making the top four. We are now five unbeaten and even though our performances in all of our last five games have not been by any means top quality we are beginning to show signs of recovery.
Congratulations to Stevie G for reaching the milestone of 500 games and hopefully we can get a good showing from Gerrard who has struggled to put together a run of form. Rovers are a formidable side when at home and have lost just one of their seven matches at Ewood Park and that defeat came on the opening day of the season against Man City.
My Prediction: 1-0 to Liverpool

reina,
johno,garra,agger,aure
mach gerr aqua
benny,kuyt riera
4.5.1 formation and masch hold mid big game from gerrard after last weeks win. thats what i would like to see. but i bet rafa has other opinions.

Good to see kelly is fit looking forward to him, darby, aquilani, amoo and Eccleston playing against fiorentina… For Blackburn though would like to see Gk-reina RB-darby LB-aurelio CB-carragher CB-agger CM-mascherano CM-gerrard LM-benayoun CF-ngog CF-kuyt RM-johnson subs cavalieri, insua, skrtel, lucas, aquilani, riera, el zhar
Would be good for kuyt to be back in his poaching position and for ngog to have his presence beside him for a physical battle. Johnson adds pace and width down the right to balance benayoun on the left jinking inside with his close control and threading through balls and most importantly for this one physical power in CM with mascherano and gerrard wouldn’t normally move johnson forward but with babel out, riera just coming back and me prefering yossi on the left anyway think he is the best option available and again at Everton he showed quality wing play. Rafa has basically said aquilani will not play any part…don’t get me started on that one have never known this with any player before rafa should stop using match fitness as an excuse and admit he loves workhorses!

dirk has proven several times before that he is inept playing as a lone striker, rafa said this morning on lfc tv that it is highly unlikely that aquilani will feature today but may get a game against fiorentina, who knows why the game is pointless.. why are we playing wiht a lone striker anyway , we are playing blackburn ffs, why arent we playing with two or three strikers

Definitely better we have 3 creative players in there and kuyt off the wing. Still would rather have ngog up front with kuyt. Kuyt hasn’t the pace for the lone striker role and his natural position is just off a quick player poaching goals. Its Blackburn at the end of the day why do we need 2 holding midfielders!! Still its an improvement.

The reason we havent playe aquil is because he was injured and your just cant chuck out an recovered player on the field Yes, Weh have done it before to torres and gerrard but this is different he is a new squad player and there is no point rushing him to have a bad time here nor rush his ability

He recovered from injury 2 months ago. Benitez said he isnt match fit so he cant play him but if he doesnt play him he cant get match fit

Im not surprised I thought hed wait for the fiorentina game to play the roman. It makes sense bexause the temple of the game will be slower and he can use it to get a match under his belt. It depends on how he plays that will determine the game after that.

kermit - December 5th, 2009 at 4:53 pm
plus chosen one the game against fiore is meaningless, pointless and it wont matter if we are beaten of aquilani plays shit, bottom line rafa doesnt trust him in a decent match and that doesnt bode well

kermit - December 5th, 2009 at 4:54 pm
kuyt isnt whack up front kuyt is whack up front alone, kuyt is a support striker not a lone front man, and if we were to try something i d rather try riera up fron yossi left and kuyt right

Riera up front. Actually that might be a better idea.
Just thought of Samba and the other huge centre back going through the back of Gerrard with his back turned to goal. Don’t fancy that.

How do they expect to get fourth place in the league when they can’t even beat Blackburn? Actually though, every single game is going to be the one that TURNS AROUND liverpools season, and they hit back with a poor performance. AWESOME! Hope they reinforce in January.

rubbish again he could have brought aquilani on for the last twenty five mins, someone needs to tell el zhar there s a time and a place for ridiculous tricks, johnson man of the match , gerrard regaining his fitness, lucas anonymous mostly except for one or two good tackles and one driving run to the by line, agger and carra partnership looks solid thats the positive thing, riera was obviously not fit, certainly not match fit , but then again neither was aquilani!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! note the sarcasm, yossi was underpar ,ngog unlucky but not yet up to it at this level, reina superb at the end, i dont know what more to say , another disappointing result in a game which could have gone either way, oh kuyt was also poor
the only positives gerrard getting fit, johnson s perfromance and carra and agger looking solid.
p.s. i dont think it matters if city beat chelsea,we need to buy a striker if babel is not going to get a chance up there

in my opinion the lineup that played today was seriously lacking pace, esp in the forward areas, not rafa s fault this time. All i will berate him for is the lack of introduction of aquilani on 65 mins, a draw was a fair result i dont think we deserved to win it, gerrard is something else, good to see him regaining match fitness, he and johnson are just different class, i think its time to take whatever amount of money we can get for kuyt and buy suarez, he isnt going to get any better , he is way too predictable
loading...
kermit - December 5th, 2009 at 6:20 pm
i dont believe mascherano is world class anymore either , i ll grant reina, and i like the partnership of carra and agger, i d like to see the stats of goals scored against us when thye are the centre back pairing, i know they didnt concede against man utd , everton and now blackburn
ngog is not up to being a deputy for torres, i know he cost little or nothing.
but we need badly need someone who can score goals, and someone like suarez who is lightning quick and adriano who is brutish and powerful , selling kuyt.
i hold off my thoughts on riera until he is match fit

at 6 15 pm winning the carling cup for chelsea is the equivalent of a schoolboy winning a gold medal in the birdie dance. the point is we needed to win today and we didnt, i dont think we really ever looked like winning

Reds Lewis - December 5th, 2009 at 6:35 pm
im starting to get really pissed off with these crap results against teams which we should be beating. Firstly…congrats to rafa for making a sub on 55mins…. its about fucking time.
Secondly, rafa what the fuck are you doing bringing on nabil el zhar for benayoun???
why not el zhar for kuyt? and ngog for riera?
against a team like blackburn you need a better striker than kuyt…kuyts a “in the hole” man if anything…hes not a bloody striker.
Hes not quick enough and he doesnt have enough skill.
Blackburns defence are brute…and most of their players are very strong.
Some physical presence wouldnt have gone amiss here…especially upfront…so why only play with a lone striker… and why Dirk kuyt?
Dirk is neither fast or strong enough to play lone striker and as previoulsy stated by kermit, is a goal poacher who does better to poach rebounds off shots from fast wingers or other forwards.
We should have started 4-4-2, with Ngog starting upfront (he made more chances than kuyt did with 70 mins or whatever it was), and partnering him should have been fucking nemeth however nemeth isnt here….so wheres our other striker? Oh we dont have one…(babels a winger now…dont forget)
Prior to this game I was starting to beleive that there wasnt much need to bring in a striker in January, however we now all know this is definately not the case…
We need to buy in January, and we need to buy big. im talking 20-30 million, otherwise we need to secure some big loan deals for big players.
We are Liverpool FC and we shouldnt be monkeying around chasing after shite players. If we dont spend big on a striker in January, and lo and behold if ngog and torres get injuired at the same time, even if its just for 2-3 weeks..we are screwed.
On another note im starting to beleive that Aquilani is suffering alot more than we were initially led to believe.

Retryboy - December 5th, 2009 at 6:40 pm
Kermit… said before the match kuyt isn’t quick enough for the lone striker role and ngog isn’t physically powerful enough together in a 4-4-2 is the only way they will work. Rafa won’t change his system though doesn’t matter if it suits the players available or if we need a goal. His substitutions where all like for like as always he has rafa has one idea and it involves a max of 4 attacking players in a team with all of those expected to defend as well. Why did we need 2 holding midfielders against Blackburn?? A £20m player who can make a goal sits on the bench again. Keep saying it we won’t make top four with rafa he has to go now!

either lucas scores plenty of goals in training or he is very efficient at removing bubble gum from under rafas desk.lucas and masch dont score enough goals, and they only pass the ball sideways and backwards.its time to play one or the other with aquilani, not both. allahs boot
