Reds boss Rafa Benitez is believed to be after Spurs striker Roman Pavlyuchenko.
The Russian forward has found life difficult at White Hart Lane, spending the majority of time on the bench for Tottenham Hotspur as Jermain Defoe, Robbie Keane and Peter Crouch hog the starting positions.
Pavlyuchenko is keen to leave North London, and the striker has been constantly linked with a move to Serie ‘A’ side Roma.
However, Liverpool boss Benitez is keen to add some strength to his thin attacking options, and Pavlyuchenko could be a shock choice for the Spaniard.
Rumours that originally surfaced in The People refuse to go away, and the striker hasn’t hidden his desire to move.
“I only sit on the bench for my club – I can only hope that January will bring changes in my life,” said Pavlyuchenko.
“I’ve never had such a black period in my life.” (Give Me Football – PFA Website)
In many ways a move for Tottenham’s very much surplus to requirements striker Roman Pavlyuchenko would make sense for all concerned and it will be interesting to see if this much speculated move comes to fruition next month. We could obviously do with another attacking option and even though the former Spartak Moscow man can’t get a game at White Hart Lane he is still a top notch forward who at Euro 2008 was considered one of the best front men in Europe but his time at the north London club has been stuttered and now Harry Redknapp seems more than likely to allow the Russian international to leave.
Roman is a player who could do a very good job at Anfield, either as a support man alongside Fernando Torres or simply as injury cover should it be needed. There has been some talk of a loan move but I can not imagine Harry Redknapp loaning us one of his players just so that we could have a better chance of beating them to fourth spot, however they are unlikely to turn down a permanent cash offer but again any such move would depend on how much money Rafa has to play with.

Can’t see this happening personally, why would a team challenging for honours sell a player to a rival team, because i certainly wouldn’t. Also i think there are better options out there and for a better price, as mentioned on previous posts, Adriano (Free) or Huntelaar (£8M) for two other potential signings.
anonymous - December 8th, 2009 at 4:49 pm
If we could get him on loan, it would only be beneficial to us given the severe lack of striking options. It’s N’gog or nothing at the moment and he is far too raw to be relying on week in week out. Torres could also do with some support rather than being relied to produce magic from nothing.
Would Tottenham be keen to give us more striking options though, when we are a rival for the Top 4? I think they’ll much prefer to flog him off to Italy.

i dont really no why him leaving Tottenham relates to him moving to mersyside. We difinatly need a striker GO FOR SUAREZ !!

I totally agree with scouse magic. There are plenty of interested parties, and I can’t see harry potentially damaging the best opportunity they’ve had since the martin jol days. I’ve also read rumours about Rafael Sobis being available on a free transfer. I don’t know too much about him. Does anyone have any insight on him?

I think he could do well up top with el nino. another choice for rafa would be james beattie as he is leaving stoke he has premiership experience and could easy get 10 goals a season for us

I’m just throwing this out there to see what some of you guys think. How about trezeguet? He’s out of favour at juve and would probably be available for cheap. He has an incredible scoring record in Italy and his size and presence in the box could be a perfect foil for el niño. Just a thought. What do you guys think?

if we did buy a new striker would he revert to 4.4.2. or would pav warm the bench? if he goes to 4.4.2. who would he chose from gerrard, masch and aquil? i wonder.

One thing is for sure, Rafa will not change his formation, god knows why he is in love with 4-2-2-1-1, it gives us know creative mobility.
We only need one defensive midfielder which will mean that we can have 5 players to attack, rather than the 4 we currently have. I personally think that we should have two up front regardless of the formation, if our opponents have a flat back four and a holding midfielder, it’s 5 against 2, which is why we are struggling to break down our opposition. IMO we need 2 quality wingers, one for either side, a striker and a good centre back. (Only reason being i have no faith in Kyriagkos and Skrtel is having a terrible season so far) I’d be tempted to offload 5 or 6 players in Jan as this is when clubs panic buy and you can get some decent cash for average players. (Rafa take note DO NOT PANIC BUY)
Warren Bloggs - December 8th, 2009 at 5:55 pm
Strength in depth in our squad as a whole? Rubbish! No we need strenghtening in key areas such as up-font and on the wings, i have said this time and time again but no one listens…RAFA DO THIS:
We will not get any money in January from our owners, so we must sell to buy:
Sell:
Voronin £3m
Babel £8m
Dossena £5m
Leaving us with £16m…..than i have also heard Athletico are after Albert Riera and are willing to offer Maxi Rodriguez plus £4m! Make this happen!
So we have rid ourselves of the useless deadwood and have bagged Maxi Rodriguez and £20m in the process, then sign the following:
Pandev from Lazio for £5m, Arsenal are interested and may swwop in January so we cannot wait until the bloody summer….sign him now!
Eljero Elia for £12m, fantastic winger and the perfect replacement for the out-going Babel, he will suceed as he is primarily a left -winger! That is unless Rafa signs him and plays him up-front lol!
£3m left so we can streghten our defence with the signing of the Gabolonese defender we are reportedly after………
So IN/OUT:
DOSSENA>>>>>>MUMBA?
BABEL>>>>>>>>>ELIA
VORONIN>>>>>>>PANDEV
RIERA>>>>>>>>>MAXI RODRIGUEZ
Our Team? (Rafa’s formation….with everyone fully fit)
…………………………………..REINA…………………………………
JOHNSON…………CARRA………..AGGER……..AURELIO
………………………AQUILANI……….MASCH…………………….
MAXI………………………………GERRARD………………….ELIA
…………………………………………..TORRES……………………….
SUBS: CAVALIERI, SKRTEL, INSUA, LUCAS, BENAYOUN, KUYT, PANDEV.
(LIKELY BENCH IN SUCH AN OUTCOME)
What do you think then guys?

isaac hunt - December 8th, 2009 at 5:59 pm
clint dempsey aint a bad shout to be fair. would be a decent squad player. i think we need a new striker so that we can mix up our formation. i dont mind 1 up front but teams are starting to know how to play us. pavluchenko is fairly good and could happen. agree that top 4 rivals are unlikely to sell to eachother tho.

i think rafa plays 4.2.3.1 because it can revert to so many aventualitys.
4.3.3. or 4.5.1. even 4.4.2 that is why he likes players who can play in muli positions
anonymous - December 8th, 2009 at 6:06 pm
It’s time for us all to stop dreaming, we do not have the money to buy any new players. If we need to buy we will have to sell. In other words sell good/world class players to afford a few decent ones. The yanks has “pulled the plug” and will just drag as down to the bottom half of the table.
anonymous - December 8th, 2009 at 6:12 pm
A few issues with this article that I must raise:
Is he worth £ 12 million – I think not!
Where do LFC get £ 12million from?
World class – and warming the bench at White Hart Lane – your having a laugh!
anonymous - December 8th, 2009 at 6:34 pm
not a bad player but 12 million is alot, if we can get pandev for 5 million…
Retryboy - December 8th, 2009 at 6:34 pm
They would never sell anyone to us at the moment as scouse magic said and he doesn’t play for Tottenham because defoe is the main man, keane and crouch aren’t better players their style fits better with defoe. If keane were the main man at the moment it would probably be pavlyuchenko getting games. Don’t think his style fits torres at all who need someone that can drop off him hold up and link as well as score. Said it before nemeth is ideal but if we were to spend money on top of that would go for Kenwyne jones think he would compliment torres and be quality in the lone striker if he was out.
Warren Bloggs - December 8th, 2009 at 6:34 pm
For one Isaac i do not just go on ‘bloody youtube’ as you put it when looking at a player, personally i think that is only any good for music and comedy, no i have seen some Bundesliga games (highlights at the least) and i think he is a capable player, i also saw him play against Scotland for the Netherlands a game he was fomidable in and even scored the winner. MoM that day in a team that has player such as Van der Vaart, Sneijder, Van Persie etc. So, i disagree i think he would be a great signing and a mile better than Babel on the wing.
Oh and what is it with so called Liverpool fans getting on Lucas’ back all the time?! He is vastly improving, is a neat midfielder who’s game is developing at a fantastic rate and he has done tha job he has been asked to do, the job Rafa has asked him to do. Not to mention the fact he has been a mile better than Gerrard so far this season, and yet no one is frowing the dagger at our skipper….not to say i am, but my point is too many people are slating him
needlessly, using him as a scapegoat.
I would not go as far as Kermit and suggest he is the future skipper of Liverpool and Brazil, especially not go as far as saying he is a bloddy ‘God’, but i think he is a capable member of our squad now and will be in the future.

i was only kidding about youtube. calm down mate!
i am a liverpool fan and have not hated lucas from his first game. i gave him my backing at the start of the season. however has he stood up and been counted in any of the matches that we have struggled in this season? he has had ok games but never exceptional games or dragged us out of the shit. i have not slated him and will never boo him and i know gerrard has underperformed but maybe that is because of lucas. when alonso had the ball last year he played so many balls through the opponents midfield to gerrard but know lucas plays sideways and backwards.
the main reason for gerrad being poor is that he has hardly played with frenando. them two make eachother but i think if torres is on form so is gerrad.

Gerrard is playing poor may be partly to do with injury but nothing to do with torress mate. hes too good a player to patronise. How many times did he play with him last season? or before the spaniard came to liverpool. I think uve got your wires crossed mate.

Scouse Magic - December 8th, 2009 at 7:32 pm
Ok Warren put it this way, if you were the manager would you have Lucas in your squad? I wouldn’t and i would replace him with Javi Martinez, Diarra (Real Madrid) or Van Der Vaart. All 3 of these players can play the deep lying playmaker sitting alongside Masch or Martinez/VDV to cover Stevie & Diarra to cover Masch.
I think he’s had a fair go at playing (Albeit in the position he’s not accustomed to) but you only have to look at the other 5/6 other teams challenging for the top positions and they have better options.
isaac hunt - December 8th, 2009 at 7:32 pm
if you take the best striker in the world out of a team and replace him with a average inexperienced striker then surely other players i.e gerrad will suffer? does anyone else agree? true that he is to good a player to patronaise but isnt it common sense that if you lose the best striker in the world then it will have a bad affect on certain players performances. he was obviously awesome before torres came and was great last year but most of gerrads performances were down to alonso. like it or not it was a massive mistake selling alonso.

Apparently we are looking to get Keirrison on loan in january from Barcelona. Apparently rafa made a deadline day bid for him and Barcelona beat us to it he has been on loan at benfica but Barcelona aren’t happy he isn’t getting games so want him loaned to another european club and rafa wants him here. Seems messed up to me we leave our own talented young striker in athens and loan someone elses.

anonymous - December 8th, 2009 at 9:17 pm
Listen it is impoertant that any player comming to liverpool has to have pace to burn.
In the upcomming game against Arsenal i predict we will lose 4 – 0 because of the extreme difference in pace. Dirk Kuyt has plenty of stamina but has no pace and the same can be said of Lucas also Insua isn’t quick enough especially for his position and benayoun and riera also are not the fastest of players as for Carragher need I say more.
Only Gerrard, Torres and Babel have blistering pace anfd for a team of 11 to only possibly have three players with this quality is shocking and sad against Arsenal my conclusion will come true.
Do not forget
The Matador.
Warren Bloggs - December 8th, 2009 at 9:19 pm
I too have heard this Retryboy and i agree, i do not see how he is a better option then Nemeth? I would love another experienced striker to compliment ‘El nino’ and our young fowards, someone like Pandev who we could get on the cheap and/or someone like Adriano or Sobis? There are plenty of options and i really can see us being busy in January.
Point taken Isaac i apologise if i freaked out lol. Simply trying to prove my point, and yes i think when Aquilani is fully fit he will be on the bench but that does not make him a bad player does it? After all i put the likes of Pandev and Benny on the bench as well. Scouse Magic i understand that but it is highly unlikely that we will sign someone such as Defour, Martinez ir Diarra.
One player i would love at Anfield though is James Milner he is outstanding i think, but as i have said before he is out of our price range.
RyanO - December 8th, 2009 at 9:32 pm
Anonymouse@ 9:17, having a laugh are ya? Still slating Carra? Guess you haven’t picked up the rags lately, they’re finally off that since he’s back to playing at a perfectly high level. As for Babel and his “blistering pace”, how in fuck would you know about his pace when he hasn’t been played and when he does, the only move he ever makes is to drop his fucking head and run straight into two defenders.

I personally would love to see Pav at liverpool but i doubt he will sell to us ………..as being a liverpool fan since as seven years old i think that Ngog is good enough to fill the void of torres if he is not fit. However i think that if we got Pav(doubtful) we could play 2 forwards Pav and Ngog when torres is not 100 per cent…….I dont like to see the commenters saying that we wont get him >>>If he is not playing first team football for tott than maybe they might just sell him to us because they think he is no good……if he went to liverpool Rafa could mould hi into a great shining star……And i certanly think that he has potential to be as good as torres and even better if he got a year or two with Rafa……………IN RAFA WE TRUST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Retryboy - December 8th, 2009 at 10:27 pm
The matador.. Agree we need more pace you missed out johnson as a speed merchant, babel should play on the right where he can use his pace. carragher had 2 bad games when he was switched to left centre back he has always played right. Told everyone then that he and skrtel were too similar in styles and that skrtels positioning was dropping him in it. Also the full backs were pushing on too much in some failed wing back experiment that people seemed to miss and carragher took the blame for that what the centre backs are supposed to do when they have balls flashed across their goal from the byline and they are facing their own net trying to stop it is beyond me. As soon as he is back on the right hand side with agger who compliments his style it works again.
Retryboy - December 8th, 2009 at 10:33 pm
Adriano if fit, lean and his focus right would be a great buy worth a gamble in my eyes only thing is rafa doesn’t seem good with the players that need an arm around the shoulder must admit have never heard of sobis

Ryano I can tell by your bad language that you are the frustrated type who still believes in the tooth fairy or something along those lines.
Why can’t you get it through your shiny bald head that simply being positive and wishing your team well is simply not enough now and again you should try applying common sense and try growing some testicles at the same time. I stick by by statement that carra is shit and that whilst he wears the red shirt liverpool will never win the premier league and as for babel what would be the point of him tearin away when the rest can’t keep up.

Sigh, The Matador, you are officially labelled an anon in my book. You make a few good points but 1) just bloody register, and 2) your arrogance just makes reading your posts a chore that I’m not willing to put myself through.
Having said that, on to the article!
I still would prefer Carlton Cole to Pavlyuchenko. I don’t see Tot selling to a rival and I also just don’t think he’s good enough. Cole has the brute force and heading ability which would work well in the lone striker role, and if Rafa could be convinced to play two strikers then Cole would compliment Torres beautifully. Especially with passing machines Like Gerrard and Aquilani (hopefully) in midfield. Plus he’s injured so he’ll be cheap (and probably sit on the bench until next Christmas), and he’ll want to jump the rickety West Ham ship if he hears that we’re serious. I think he’d go for 15 mil which is way better value for an extra 3 mil. At least in my opinion.
Retryboy - December 9th, 2009 at 11:52 am
Aquaman- What do you think of Kenwyne jones for the same reasons you give for cole a complimentary style for torres and brute force as a lone striker in his absence? Probably more affordable too
Scouse Magic - December 9th, 2009 at 11:55 am
I wouldn’t go for Cole, however there are a few players at W.Ham that are interesting, which is Stanislas, Hines and Collison. I think we could these 3 combined for £15M, the positives to take from this deal would be all three would qualify as English/Trained by a English youth system, plus what I’ve seen of all three i think that they could do a job for us.
Aquaman - December 9th, 2009 at 12:30 pm
Hmm. Interesting Retryboy. Granted Kenwyne has the same strengths as Cole, but I just don;t think he has the same quality. Cole is a prolific goalscorer in comparison to Jones. At least in the past. Last year West Ham were the succeeders while Sunderland scraped the bottom. Now the tables have turned somewhat. The difference between the two cases, however, is that Cole was the reason West Ham did so well, whereas Bent is the reason for Sunderland.
Personally I prefer Cole, but you are right that Jones would be cheaper, but possibly less value for money.
Hines is a different case. The kid is lightening, but untested. I’d be nervous to buy him as a backup to Torres as we don’t really know whether this is just Hull City syndrome or whether he really has the stones for the prem. Plus he wouldn’t really compliment Torres as they both have speed. We need a dominating aerial presence (both for goals and to defend set pieces), but give him another year, then I’ll make a judgement.
anonymous - December 9th, 2009 at 12:44 pm
These players mentioned are not good enough I mean Kenwyn Jones are you having a laugh and hines is a good player but surely you should be wanting your side to sign players that would improve the team rather than squad.
You have been educated.
Also Aquaman I am not arrogant more confident.
The Matador.
Aquaman - December 9th, 2009 at 12:48 pm
“You have been educated.”
I detect no arrogance at all in this sentence, just as there is no sarcasm in mine.
Presenting your opinions as fact (rather than opinion!) is arrogance and I have no time for it.
toto - December 9th, 2009 at 1:12 pm
not a bad player but 12 mill a bit to much we could stick another 2 or 3 mill and go for darren bent plenty of goals in that lad
but saying that would sunderland sell and would harry sell to pool he might sell then buy back 6 months later
Retryboy - December 9th, 2009 at 3:46 pm
Rate jones a lot higher than carlton cole personally and he does actually have a lot better scoring record than cole, is younger so definitely better value in my eyes will agree to differ. Darren bent couldn’t play with torres you need someone that can be a link player dropping deeper or do the front man role if torres is out so pavlyuchenko wouldn’t work as a partner either.
Aquaman - December 9th, 2009 at 3:53 pm
Well let me put it this way. I’d take either, but on most recent performances (notably against us) I’d prefer Cole. I hadn’t realised that Jones was younger (guess looks can be deceiving) so that’s a good point as well.
kermit - December 9th, 2009 at 4:17 pm
this would be the same useless owen who hit a hattrick last night
Retryboy - December 9th, 2009 at 4:24 pm
I was thinking cole was about 23 myself to be honest. Guess neither of us factored in the graveyard to a young englishmans career of the chelsea reserves! Shaun wright-phillips 28 now! Good luck to daniel sturridge lol would be happier with cole than any of the other names mentioned so far. There hasn’t been any mention of jones just a personal favourite. Have admitted before don’t tend to follow the foreign leagues so pandev can’t really give a verdict on. Don’t think any will happen fear if rafa sells the 6/7 players we want sold he will not buy 2 quality but replace with another 6/7 including van nistelrooy not long till we shall see though must admit darby and pacheco getting their chance tonight would make me feel a lot better about benitez.
redrob - December 9th, 2009 at 5:49 pm
if liverpool were looking for a cheap, second striker, who does not mind warming the bench, and he was looking at the likes of van nistelroy, or in this case pav, then why did he not go for micheal owen in the summer. he does still have it, he is only 29 and he did score a hattrick for the scum last night. rafa i dont believe is looking for a striker? who would say that micheal would have rather signed for man u than us? obviously rafa was not interested.
