COS Contributor Gillen Reid discusses the plight of the Scottish Premier League and what can be done to revive its fortunes.
The SPL, we cant defend it complain it certainly has gone downhill, thanks to the worlds media compounding the issue we now have a situation where Rangers and Celtic are no more the driving force of Scottish football, no more do they have the pull they once had. My theory is a reinvention of scottish football, we now have 3 organisations running 4 divisions? What is that?
What has to happen is a liquidisation of one of the organisations, almost copying the premiership, having the SFA running the premier league and the SFL running the remaining divisions, also what needs to be introduced is the pyramid system, long has it been suggested that the national side are short of positions, bringing in Scotland’s amateur teams will definitely expand the choice on offer.
I’ve often thought of the Bundesliga, German efficiency may not always be the most aesthetically pleasing but look at them now, Wolfsburg debuting the champions league and holding their own, the division itself becoming more and more exciting each week, speak to Mr Honegstein from the guardian if you don’t belive me, why not adopt the same attitude in Scottish football, have a look at the latest problem at Rangers, they are in the depths of depression after spending beyond their means in the last couple of decades, with the likes of Tore Andre Flo and Bert Konterman who certainly failed to live up to their combined supposed value of over £15m. Celtic on the other hand, hats off they are a much more smoothly run club but have sacrificed standard for security as they continue to field considerably sub standard players, with the 1-0 defeat by Hearts just the other day reigniting the ongoing debate.
Another one of the problems standing is games, with the spl only consisting of 12 clubs each team has to play each other four times, the obvious solution to that would expanding the league? Ive been looking into this apparently alot of the clubs have a problem with this due to lack of travelling fans, well reduce your ticket prices? Use the carling cup as an example tickets going for a tenner at the emirates, plenty of families showing up just for a night out a number of youth players in to make a name for themselves? It seems to obvious to me!?
So my theory stands as this, remove the organisation that goes wth the name of SPL , Introduce a pyramid system too include the ammetuer sides in Scotland, reduce ticket prices? Wheres the problem?
