Reports suggest that Liverpool are struggling financially, and thus will need to sell to buy.
The following article by COS contributor Reds Lewis, looks at the areas of the first team which are commonly
reffered to as “dead-wood”, and who they could be keeping out of a Reds Shirt.

Anfields hidden equity – time for a clearout
January is fast approaching, and the rumours surrounding transfers to Liverpool are abundant. Summer saw us bring in over £30m
pounds worth of players, however this was at the expense of two first team players. Including
a certain Mr Xabi Alonso….
The players often described as deadwood are none other than the following…
1. Andrea Dossena – failed to make an impact and finds himself at 3rd choice left back,
he is homesick. Still young, and valued in Italy…It would be fair to say we could move
him on for around £4 million.
2. Andrei Voronin – I dont need to say anything here! Valued in Germany,
I think we could get about £3 million for him.
3. Damien Plessis – a defensive midfielder who has been in the first team for a while but never really made
any appearances…could probably get £2 million for him from a championship club or equivelant…
4. Phillip Degen – very attack minded defender, probably more of a right winger than a right-back, however
im not sure hes Liverpool quality, probably be better off at the likes of hull city or equivelant
where hed be able to get a regular starting place…got him on a free….get rid for £1 million.
5. Nabil El Zhar – probably not a bad player but again…is he liverpool quality?
either way id get rid for £2 million
6. Charles Itjande – absolute disgrace – get rid for £1 million to whoever will have him.
7. David Martin – a decent keeper but hes never going to get ahead of cavalieri or Reina,
no doubt that some lower-table premiership teams would be interested – £3 million.
Assuming that the last 5 of these players are on at least 10 grand a week, and that the first two are probably on about 20-30 grand a week,
we’re looking at around 110 grand a week at least. Lets face it are they worth that? How often do we see them? Pre-season games or
carling cup games? Their combined value, based on the realistic valuations above, comes to £16 million. Now lets say that we could squeeze £10 million out of the owners… thats 26 million pounds. Strength in-depth seems to be our main weakness, and strength in depth is quality, not quantity.
So what sort of quality could we bring in for £26 million? The following are midfield and striker signings….I don’t think we need any defenders.
Combination A
1. Eljero Elia – moved to hamburg for around £9 million….has so far this season scored 5 goals in 16 appearances, and a fair few assists aswell.
looks like babel did a few years ago, however is definately a winger and not a striker like babel… £9 million might prise him away from the hands of Hamburg.
2. Van der Vaart – we’d have £11 million left if we bought elia….so could we get Van der Vaart for this? Sources would indicate to a yes…as he is unhappy at Real Madrid and was on the brink of leaving in the summer….no doubt he is world class, and can play pretty much anywhere in Midfield.
Combination B
1. Aaron Lennon – a lethal crosser and oozes peace…a full england internation too…£20 million might prise him from spurs…especially if they slip up in their next few games and drop from around 5th spot.
2. Leaving us with £5 million for Pandev from Lazio…he’d bolster our attacking prowess, and he is a decent player and an international too…
Combination C
1. Pavyluchenko – £10 million from Spurs…wants to leave however is dividing opnion..
2. Mata or David Silva – £16 million would probably lure them away…
Combination D
1. Now this is the big one….Sergio Aguero… assuming we had £26 million to spend after sales and 10 million off the owners we could also sell ryan babel. Now i’m not saying we should definately be selling him, but cerain sources e.g. sky sports news have been posting interviews with a general message of him wanting to leave Anfield. Now if we could get £10 million for Babel, then that would leave us with £36 million. Aguero has played with Torres before, hes a liverpool fan, and has a better chance of champions league football than at his current club. Not to mention Atletico Madrid are in financial difficulty. Torres snubbed the likes of
Chelsea’s big money offers before he came to Liverpool, maybe Aguero is waiting for us to make a move? 36 million is a fair offer to Ateltico, and even if they receive higher offers from elsewhere…then they cant sell him unless he agrees to go.

you said strength in depth…i am ok with A it might even help Babel a little bit…B English player are over the top valuation and Pandev is more than $5 million for sure…C is ok…D is totally no strength in depth…I Liverpool should now try to look at Arsenal model…if they are not going to win the league, then might as welll et the youngsters come through for few years and from sale of those unable to make grade proly will help with any $$$ issues…

In the current climate, I think loan deals with a view to a permanent move later are our only hope for these misfits. El Zhar I’d hang on to. Impact player – had some success – may develop.
Agree we need proven premiership players – also a bit of experience. What would the ‘Gary Mac style’ signing be, to inject a calm presence. Van Nistlehorse?

Think 5 of the sales are no brainers. El zhar and martin not sure about but we are definitely overloaded with goalies. Would rather cavalieri went and we trusted martin as understudy not least because cavalieri would bring more money in and we do need to make a decision on el zhar. Definitely agree with the principle of the 7 out 2 quality in. Would add kyrgiakos to the list. I know that degen is on 38k a week you would assume that voronin, kyrgiakos, dossena are on at least that the youngsters 15k can only guess but think thats conservative another reason to keep martin not cavalieri. About 200k a week in wages, 2 good players probably 60k a week each saving 80k a week. Works out just over £4m saved in a year that could go towards fees we won’t be seeing a penny off the owners. Thats the problem we need to sell the players doesn’t give us a lot of bargaining power with fees.

fair calls on all your people to selll, though i would give dossena more time now that there is another italian at the club.
on your combos, pav and mata is the one i d choose, though i d prefer adriano and mata
i d also debate a look at mcgeady for the right wing, maybe he isnt quite there yet but in a good team he could progress and have lots of success.
so i d spend it 16 for mata adriano free mcgeady 6

lavezzi and mata can back up for torres and gerrard but can also play wider and defour is a great young prospect. may be able to get lavezzi on a part deal with dossena since he has been linked with them
this would strenghten our squad so much.

First of all, good article, Reds Lewis. Always keen for more people to voice their opinions, as long as you don’t mind us disagreeing occasionally.
If I’m not mistake, didn’t Plessis renew his contract recently? Maybe I’m wrong, but if he did then he isn’t going anywhere.
Were this a perfect world then I would agree wholeheartedly with both your sales and purchases. However I suspect that even if these players were sold, we still wouldn’t get the money to spend. We’ve already reached 40 mil spent this season which is only 2 or 3 under the highest we’ve ever spent under the yanks. I don’t see us selling or buying anyone this window. Hope I’m wrong, but I don’t think I am.

As much as i like to have D but that won’t be to helpful as spending loads for a striker or spending on 2 or 3 vital players i would pick the latter one.
I would pick A as i tink that has to players which would help bolster the squad big time and won’t be very expensive.
B Lennon would be to expensive and C Silva i’m sick to death of hearing every transfer window that we will get him when we don’t as Rafa doesn’t want him.if he did we would of got him by now

I have it on good authority that Dossena, Voronin, Riera and Babel will leave in January if Rafa can find the buyers…
…a dead-cert to leave in Andrea Dossena who has pretty much packed all his bags already will get us £5m dare i say more….Voronin is more tricky no doubt Rafa would sell him but it is finding a suitable buyer, rumours in Germany are abound and i am confident he will be offloaded for near £3m as Lewis said…Babel is unfortuante and i doubt Rafa has fully made his mind-up on the player but Ryan does not wish to stay at the club he will be either loaned or sold out….and finally mr. Albert Riera will be used as a make-weight in a possible deal with Juan Mata!!…………
……………therefore (of all goes to plan) Rafa is hoping to generat near £15m or more dependant on whether Babel does go….
….he is looking to sign Goran Pandev for near £4-5m early on as both Milan clubs are also fighting for his signature and then as i said Rafa is trying to tempt Valencia with a pakage deal of £10m plus Riera for Juan Mata as i said in the above…………
……alot of sources on the ‘net’ have suggested that Rafa is looking to mix-up the formation a little after the distatse shown from fans..therefore he may well revert back to a 4-4-2 using Benny on the right (as he has done recently) and Mata on the left with Pandev and Torres up-front……………..
………….interesting times lay ahead……………keep faith!

Calvo…
Assuming you get those chosen players out of your squad and for the price that has been mentioned Liverpol would still need atleast another 10 mil on top.
Now the main thing if i was a liverpol fan would be, do/would i trust Rafa to get thr right personnel in and would they play or fit in?
Because as the likes of Babel, Riera etc have shown is that that is not often the case.Sure the likes of Masch,Reina,Torres have shown otherwise but right now considering the position Liverpool are in Rafa CANNOT afford to make any mistakes in the transfer market come January.
And considering the length of time that he has been there by now he should have a clear idea of the direction he wants the club to go in but it seems as though that is not the case.
Anyway with regards to the names you would want coming in it would prove more beneficial to get someone like RVN as cover for Torres, get VDV as he wants to leave, trading Riera for Mata ( plus cash ) and even look at getting Senna from Villareal, because it does seem likely that Masch will be gone whether thats in January or by the summer so why not cover that possibility…
or pay Rafa 20 mil and get another manager in…and before ppl say liverpool will back to square one ask yourself this where are you now and could it really get any worse!!

Anon 3.59 we have just been through the worst injury crisis possible and none of those players got a game or are ever close to getting a game when fit. Itandje&martin(Gk) we have reina, cavalieri, gulacsi degen(RB) we have johnson, kelly, darby dossena(LB) we have aurelio, insua, mavinga coming through plessis(CDM) we have mascherano, lucas, spearing voronin(CF) we have torres, nemeth, ngog, pacheco, kuyt, babel el zhar(RM) we have babel, benayoun, kuyt so can’t understand what we are losing from the squad and if the one player is a first team regular then definitely.

Scouse Magic - December 16th, 2009 at 4:39 pm
RVN, VDV and Bentley in on Loan, Pandev £5M, still think we could nick Adam Johnson from Boro as he’s NOT signed the contract that’s been offered, thus we can get him for next to nothing with he’s contract expiring in June. (Can play either wing)
This would cost approx £15M in total, then if we can offload Babel (£9M), Voronin (£2.5M), Itandje (Free), Dossena (£5M), Degen (£1M). This would give us a profit of £2.5M which could go straight to paying off debts.
I know there are some gambles for the loans, but at the moment what have we got to lose, we are not playing well and with these players not getting much playing time, they will want to fight for a first team place to get a permanent move.

I think it would certainly be good to off load all of those players to reduce the wage bill and bring in some cash, but i would add 30 mill for mascherano and release aurelio. Bring back risse, bring in drenthe, bentley, pav, carlton cole and scott parker and to make the figres add up maybe sell babel and why not kuyt & riera too! with drenthe and risse down the left youd have two players able to interchange in attack and defence easily and with very good strikeing options and right sided midfielders, yossi/bent no need for kuyt. babel would be my one reluctance still think he may come good =) aurelio to injury prone and a big earner, riera would bring in good money and with insua in the mix we would have decent left sided options, so i would think it better to bring in a good young left sided offencive player for the squad. none of its likely but its fun to speculate. liv 3 – 0 wig =)

for january getting players onloan may be the deal Van nisteroy/adriano to assit torres upfront and wat ever sales we can make we should get Eljero Elia/pandev/Mata/ David Silva/van dar vaart and doubt fi the yankees will release above 10-16m.that’s why the onloan playes will help us and for Sergio Aguero he loved liverpool but rafa wont go for the fee issue cause his current club will love to cash in big on him or they can atmost say player plus cash from us and its reira/nbenayoun or aurelio they may be pointing at or some of are spanish youngsters

FACT . we dont want no more shitty squad players. and think if reina got injured . oh my god martin at the likes ov old trafford . thats just plain stupid. if we buy . then buy for the first 11. if ya gonna sell . then sell the shit that cant or shouldent get a game. reds lewis.
good artical, with some interesting points.
lets say that we did get the money for these players, which i think you have quoted as good prices. but, ‘in the real world’ i wonder if other clubs will pay that much money for players with such little match fitness. i think alot of clubs work on the ‘loan with a view to buy policy’
i like the thought of aaron lennon.
but weather redknapp would sell for 20 mil, or even seel at all. but a winger with pace in abundance and with crossing ability is important.
i cant wait for jan to see what dealings we have.

How are you dreaming of Aguero for only 26 mil..?He won’t give the scousers the nod unless you qualify for the Champions League and going by the present standings, that’s a distant probabilty……
So why don’t you sell Torres and Gerrard and buy some youngstars who can sustain you in the long run? Anyway or the other,Liverpool winning the Premier League has become a joke of the town.Follow Arsenal you Scouser idiots.

Spota-We’re never gonna agree on everything mate. I actually think it won’t be long until gulacsi overtakes cavalieri and martin if he hasn’t already. Just being realistic nobody will be beating down the door for the players listed. Martin would probably bring in 1m cavalieri 5m. Martin’s wages 1/3 of cavalieri’s and whilst cavalieri has had 2 games in a season martin has had successful loan spells. You remember how good cudicini was before spending all that time on the bench? Wasn’t the same after and whilst cavalieri had a good game against fiorentina although he made a meal out of some pretty run of the mill saves, he had a shocker at arsenal. Add to that touch wood reina is never injured would take the risk for 5m to spend elsewhere personally.

Sorry guys, combo A was meant to say 15 million for Elia – not 9 million!
Judging by the intellectual comments Im quite pleased with my first article!
Im not really going to listen to anyone who is anonymous and just says “lol that is crap”…
In response to this comment : (anon)
“absoloute rubbish artical in my opinion, we do not have the strength and depth to be releasing 7 players, b, c and d are total nonsense, why on earth would spurs want to sell lennon to liverpool when are the minute you could say are fighting for the title, 5 mill for pandev?? don’t know what planet you were on when you thought of that price, your last choice is hilarious! sell 7 players and ask for 10 mill from the useless owners just to buy one player???? we all ready know its a team game, the full squad is not good enough, that is why we are strugling, even torres and gerrard are strugling! look at the likes of villa, buying good playerS for peanuts and at this moment in time would wipe us of the pitch”
erm, pandev is out of contract soon, so no im not having a laugh. 5 million or so is a serious bid, as im sure most people on here will agree with me!
Im talking about 7 players that never really make a showing for this first team!
By ridding ourselves of these players and using youngsters in carling cup/pre-season then we could add some quality and give our youngsters a better run in the team!
And re : Aguero..we are talking about one hell of a player….hes played with torres before remember, and 36 million for him isnt that much considering its rumoured that chelsea are willing to part with 55 million for him.
Also Aquaman im not sure about plessis and his new contract! Ive got no idea at all lol!

I think a realistic option at the moment would be like this:
Sell the ‘dead wood’…. Voronin, El Zhar, Itjande , Dossena, Martin and perhaps Babel because I think he wants to go anyway.
Before we buy I think a smart move at this point would be to grab Bentley and Pavlyachenco(spelling) from Spurs ( I think they both looking for exits anyway) so grab both on loan for the rest of season with option to buy.
Bentley would offer great width and Pav as a second striker option, adding strenght and more team options for not much initial cost.
Then we need to wait and see the Masha saga’s end, if he goes then we have 30mil plus the change from the sales of the ‘dead wood’. If so then thier plenty of money to buy big! In my opinion a striker to partner Torres, my first choice there would be David Villa.
Then we need a quality CB because Carrager is not getting any younger.
All said and done I think we would be foolish not to be hounding van der Vaart for his signature regardless of other signings. He would be a great addition should Mascha go to Barca.

Good start Reds Lewis.
Milner, Lennon coming to us are as probable as ex-president Bush receiving Nobel peace prize anytime soon. It seems Spurs and Villa will be fighting us tooth and nail for the 4th place this season. As for the valuations for players we want to move, “dead wood” (as called and named above) usually does not bring you very much, when sold.
Two points where I have a question for Reds. Why would Atletico accept 36M from us, if they turned down 55M from Chelsea. Nobody gives you any favours in this business.
Plessis shone brighty against Arsenal, 2 seasons ago, then quickly fell on his face when started last season. He got a new contract from Rafa, either in hope of bouncing back longer term, or getting some money for him when traded away. We got nothing for people with expired contracts (for instance Pennant).

Good article, but i would actually sell babel, voronin, dossena, lucas, and id try get in a.young and augero. and we would deffently be alot stronger side, i understand that we would still be short but our youth players are adequite cover at the moment and i think them 2 additions would turn us from quite poor this season to unstoppable! young for me is the best winger in england pace skill and can cross a ball, and augero is a young prospect coming through and would be brilliant playing alongside nando, the reason id sell lucas to is because we dont ned to defensive midfielders and he is nowhere near as good as mascherano!

What about Lucas and Babel? Lucas is one of the worst central midfielders I’ve ever seen and Babel has been a complete waste of money. Great one minute but terrible the next. I think we’re living a bit of a fantasy if we think we’re going to have a wad of money to spend, what with failing to progress in the Champs Lge and struggling to finish in the top four this season heaping more misery on our finances

Look foward to see what we have going on this season. After injury ravaged start the players are still adjusting & need more fluency & combinations to play with confidence to give a true indication of where we are. This will then give more direction of what is needed. Not 1 to kick out at any players but i’ve had enough of Lucas who can’t win a game on his own but certainly can lose 1. Replace this guy NOW- constantly giving away cheap penalties, sluggish on & off the ball, botches every shot at goal, poor defensive reads all day- There are 2-3 other borderline players also. Torres , Gerrard & the underrated Benayoun can not carry the team every game but when 1 or more of this trio are injured our chances of winning are down by 70%. Good to see Ngog improving a little & Babel- another case of would, could, should- by early January i think we’ll see who should go & of course who to buy- give this squad till then to work it out.

sell dead wood sell want away maschereno before is value reduces to far ie before he as less than 18 months contract and with the money LFC would get for these players buy 2 or 3 better quality players and drop gerard back into centre midfield.
Elias swap babel plus cash left wing
Maxi Rodriguez available it seems for modest fee right wing
if we have enough left go for Aguero or wait till summer and sign him before world cup he will be the next big star

Sign Gareth Bale, Van Der Vaart and Ruud Van Nistelrooy
Sell Riera, Dossena, Bable and Lucas
Change formation to 4-1-2-1-2
———————Reina———————————
—Johnson—–Agger—Carrager——Bale——-
——————-Masherano/Gerrard—————–
—Aqualini/VDV———————–Kuyt/Benayoun
——————-Gerrard/Aqualini/VDV—————
————-RVN———————Torres————-
You might say im taking the piss by playing Gerrard in CDM. If Aqualini begins to find form, he can be the best in the world. He is a more technical player then Stevie and has more vission. Gerrard can play defensive midfielder and still score goals. He is the best holding midfielder in the world, but he is not the best attacking midfielder. Sure, he scored plenty of goals last year but thats because of Xabi Alonso was able to defend and create goals for Gerrard. Push him back and get him setting up the plays at the start, because thats what liverpool needs. Gareth Bale would cost three million. He is a class wide defender and would be a great addition to any team. His set pieces also give us another option. Van Nistelrooy is one of the greatest strikers, but it depends on his fitness.

Got to be the best anon comment I’ve read in ages. Disagree about RVN (old and his wages will be too high. Oh and he’s a manc), and I’d also have VDV and Aq playing on either side with Kuyt and Yossi on the bench, but still, what a terrifying team!

Firstly, Itandje is already out on loan and has been ‘ridden’
Secondly, Martin cannot fetch so much money
Thirdly, we got Degen on a free but we fed him with a big signing on fee (4M??)
Fourthly, El Zhar has the potential but he is a late bloomer, so he should go.
Lastly, Plessis is a great promise and should not go.

some awful shouts here!
is it just more or is plessis not better than lucas, plus we want class so y would we sign 4th choice striker for spurs when we are seen as a bigger club?
should be looking to more van nistelrooy and van der vaart on the cheap.
also can we afford to pay that amount of money on one player? if they players around arent good enough and still conseed bad goals then a striker for stupid money aint helping. Liverpool should look towards left sided players with insuia, dossena not good enough and reira and aureillo injury proven leave striker such as babel on the wing.
looking at the difference in the wigan game n the portsmouth 442 worked n 451 just didnt, y change a winning team?
one easy solution a manager change maybe

72.
First of all we need to change our formation back to 4-4-2!!!!!!!!!
Kuyt needs to be droppd on to the bench Bennayoun should go back on the ring wing. The Back 4 are ok will survive the rest of the season, however Juan Vargas as a left back is a great idea, need to buy eljero elia as a natural left winger, if masch goes then buy k.honda from v v v venlo he is a skillfull def mid after that i would sign Mata or Pavlechenko to assist Torres up front.
NOW FOR THE RUBBISH TO BE TAKEN OUT:
Degan Dossena Reira Itjange Babel Voronnin and Skretel and El Zhar
Johnson ——– Jamie ———– Agger ———- Vargas
————————– Honda——————————
Benny—————Gerrard—————-Elia————
————————Torres/Mata/Pav—————–

Always thought Plessis was a decent player, but looks like Lucas and Spearing are the younger players ahead of him, let alone Mascherano, Gerrard & Aquilani.
Combination A:
Elia for 9m leaves us with 11m for VDV? 26m-9m=11m????
Combination B:
Pandev is going to be a free agent.
Combination C:
If Valencia rejected 20m in the Summer, as reported, they won’t accept 16m now for Silva!
Combination D:
You already calculated Babel’s fee in the 26m, as well as the 10m from owners, so it still only leaves us with 26m (can’t sell Babel twice!). If Chelsea are offering 40m+, we won’t get him.
We should rather look at quick, cheap or loan short term solutions in January, ie; taking the following players on loan:
1- Ruud v. Nistlerooy
2- Bojan Krkic
3- Kierisson
4- David Bentley
If we have any money, we should go for either Silva or Mata, although Mata is the cheaper option.
