Manchester United close in on talented Spanish pair.
Manchester United target David Villa and David Silva from Valencia
Manchester United have been linked with a £50 million double swoop for Valencia forwards David Villa and David Silva.
Valencia need to raise funds to pay off their mounting debts, but were seemingly determined to hold on to their two most prized assets.
However, with a much-needed cash injection vital if the club is to stay afloat, Valencia director Fernando Gomez said: “The club made a great effort to keep our players this summer but our economic situation remains very serious.
“It was a success to keep them, but there comes a point when you can’t stand it any more. We may have to sell Villa.”
United were linked with the pair over the summer, as were Real Madrid and Barcelona, but no moves materialised as Valencia demanded £50m a piece.
With Real having already splashed out £200m on the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Kaka, their interested wained, as did Barca’s, while United were unable to convince Villa to leave Spain for the Premier League.
The Mirror reports, however, that they may have more luck this time round, and funds should not be an issue, especially with Ronaldo’s world record transfer still swelling the Old Trafford coffers.
United currently have three established, world class strikers in their ranks – Wayne Rooney, Dimitar Berbatov and Michael Owen – and Ferguson is keen to recruit a fourth, hence the interest in 27-year-old Villa.
Silva, meanwhile, is only 23 and is seen as the ideal replacement for Manchester Unite veteran Ryan Giggs, who is nearing the end of his United career. (Telegraph)
Sir Alex was very wise to not go on a massive spending spree in the summer with the huge sum of money they received fro Cristiano Ronaldo but now it appears Ferguson is keen to bring in two quality attacking options to Manchester United as they look to push on with their multiple challenges and attempt to overhaul Chelsea at the Premier League summit.
The Valencia pair David Villa and David Silva have been consistently linked with a move away from the financially stricken La Liga side and the Old Trafford outfit have been high up on the list of clubs chasing the Spanish duo and if the reigning Premier League champions clinch such a deal they will have an even more creative attacking line up and one that will surely scare the life out of defences across the continent.
David Villa is a veritable goal machine, netting at an incredible rate in Spain with 116 goals in four and half seasons and his success has been down in no small part to his teammate Silva who is an adaptable source of attacking flair working best out wide. Manchester United have an abundance of options in their squad but do have a fair few players reaching the autumn of their careers and with these two Spanish internationals at a good age and could well be on their way to the Premier League if either of the two Spanish giants, Barcelona and Real Madrid, decide to not make a move for either.
