Football - Liverpool v Arsenal Barclays Premier League

At a glittering gala at the Zurich Kongresshaus, England stars John Terry and Steven Gerrard were named in the FIFPro World XI, voted for by their fellow professionals.
Fellow Premier League stars Patrice Evra, Nemanja Vidic and Fernando Torres were also picked, along with former Manchester United star Ronaldo.

Real Madrid’s Iker Casillas was picked in goal and Barca quartet Dani Alves, Xavi, Iniesta and Messi completed the line-up.
Cristiano Ronaldo won the inaugural Fifa Puskas Award for the best goal of the year for his stunning 40-yard strike while playing for Manchester United against FC Porto in the quarter-finals of the Champions League in April.

That is quite some XI and its good to see two Liverpool players make the list and there is no doubt that Fernando Torres and Steven Gerrard are Anfield heroes it is still a little surprising to see both named in the Team of the Year.

Whilst both were instrumental in our fine second spot finish last term it would be fair to say that Steven Gerrard hasn’t exactly covered himself in glory this term and hasn’t managed to carry his teammates in the manner he usually does. Fernando Torres on the other hand is a veritable goal machine for Liverpool and without the Spaniard we would probably be even lower than our current eight place finish.

The FIFA plaudits just go to show that in this pair we do have truly world class talent and whilst I wouldn’t go as far as to say we are a two man side, it does seem that our over dependence on Torres and Gerrard has been found out this season. We have a squad which lacks depth and Liverpool are suffering now because of it. We can still make the top four and we could still end the season with some silverware but the ambitions we have left from this term have greatly reduced from the heady hopes we had in early August.

I would also add that Didier Drogba must be a little surprised to not make the line-up having scored 30 goals in the calendar year and generally been a forward that defenders have found unplayable.
