Arsene Wenger has an “interested eye” on the transfer market in January and is perfectly willing to sign a player who is ineligible for this season’s Champions League.

The Arsenal manager has already admitted that he is looking to bring in a new addition, probably a striker, during the window. However his options are limited given that, ideally, they have to be high-quality, ready to make an immediate impact and yet able to play in Europe.

Of course Wenger was in the same position last January and brought in Andrey Arshavin. The little Russian fulfilled the first two criteria well but was cup-tied in the Champions League. However, it did not stop him making a massive contribution late in Arsenal’s campaign.

During an exclusive webchat with Arsenal.com on Tuesday, one fan asked Wenger if he would be willing to sign a striker who could not play in Europe.

“Yes, I would,” he responded. “We are going for the domestic title and the FA Cup aswell and doing that allows you to rest a player for the Champions League or play another player in the Premier League. Of course I would prefer the player who can play in both competitions and so it would mean the player has the quality to play in the long-term for Arsenal Football Club.

“But we have an interested eye on the transfer window and if the right player turns up then we will do it.

“Sometimes you think that is a bargain you cannot turn down and don’t forget Arshavin got us in the Champions League last season.” (Official Arsenal Site)

So who could Arsene be talking about? Perhaps I am just misreading the situation but I could swear he was perhaps referring to Edin Dzeko, what do Arsenal fans think? Some may think he might at a push be referring to Marouane Chamakh but the Borddeaux man seems happy to see out the season at the French club, not least as he is still aiming for big honours whereas Dzeko’s Wolfsburg were dumped out of the Champions League and are well off the Bundesliga pace.

I agree with Wenger that signing a cup tied player is not the end of the world and Andrei Arshavin more than proved his worth when we picked him up this time last year. The Emirates is in need of another attacking option also so that just gives more meat to the rumour that the Bosnian could be a very real potential January signing.

With RVP out for some time we could do with another striker and Edin Dzeko has the physique and quality to make it in the Premier League and perhaps most importantly, if we don’t get him you can bet your life Man United will!
