Arsene Wenger has an “interested eye” on the transfer market in January and is perfectly willing to sign a player who is ineligible for this season’s Champions League.
The Arsenal manager has already admitted that he is looking to bring in a new addition, probably a striker, during the window. However his options are limited given that, ideally, they have to be high-quality, ready to make an immediate impact and yet able to play in Europe.
Of course Wenger was in the same position last January and brought in Andrey Arshavin. The little Russian fulfilled the first two criteria well but was cup-tied in the Champions League. However, it did not stop him making a massive contribution late in Arsenal’s campaign.
During an exclusive webchat with Arsenal.com on Tuesday, one fan asked Wenger if he would be willing to sign a striker who could not play in Europe.
“Yes, I would,” he responded. “We are going for the domestic title and the FA Cup aswell and doing that allows you to rest a player for the Champions League or play another player in the Premier League. Of course I would prefer the player who can play in both competitions and so it would mean the player has the quality to play in the long-term for Arsenal Football Club.
“But we have an interested eye on the transfer window and if the right player turns up then we will do it.
“Sometimes you think that is a bargain you cannot turn down and don’t forget Arshavin got us in the Champions League last season.” (Official Arsenal Site)
So who could Arsene be talking about? Perhaps I am just misreading the situation but I could swear he was perhaps referring to Edin Dzeko, what do Arsenal fans think? Some may think he might at a push be referring to Marouane Chamakh but the Borddeaux man seems happy to see out the season at the French club, not least as he is still aiming for big honours whereas Dzeko’s Wolfsburg were dumped out of the Champions League and are well off the Bundesliga pace.
I agree with Wenger that signing a cup tied player is not the end of the world and Andrei Arshavin more than proved his worth when we picked him up this time last year. The Emirates is in need of another attacking option also so that just gives more meat to the rumour that the Bosnian could be a very real potential January signing.
With RVP out for some time we could do with another striker and Edin Dzeko has the physique and quality to make it in the Premier League and perhaps most importantly, if we don’t get him you can bet your life Man United will!

AW would never buy Dzeko. If he did, that would be the end of Bendtner, and we all know AW has invested too much in him to kill his Arsenal career now. Especially just when he is about to come into his own.

What do I think? As an Arsenal supporter? Edin Dzeko ticks just about every box for me. Tall, powerful, fast, and an EXCELLENT finisher of the ball. He is also young, which ticks another very important box, the one pertaining to Arsene Wenger’s age policies. Dzeko is the kind of striker who Arsenal have been dying for since Henry left. I honestly believe that a striker like this will only help players around him, including Bendtner, by finally forcing them to raise the levels of their respective games. Either way, regardless of anyone else playing up top for Arsenal, Dzeko will score boatloads of goals for us, he scored over 25 last season with esssentially one creative player behind him, Misimovic. With a team of class this man will become a great, he can score with one leg tied to the bed and is already good enough to run riot in the EPL if given the opportunity. I really hope that opportunity comes from us because if it doesnt it will certainly ceom from ManU or Chelsea and I honestly believe that we must have a death wish if we let him go anywhere in the league. Anyways, a little long winded, but as an Arsenal supporter and someone who has rated Dzeko for years, I would LOVE to see him at the Emirates.

Good grief, where do you guys get this rubbish from? He looks amazing on youtube, yup so do I. 1 Dzeko is not fast at all and the German league is crap2 Toni is on £130k per week + at Bayern, you think we will pay that to a 32 year old?

Tel me wen he signs Dzeko…
Cuz Wenger apparently was also “INTERESTED” in Drogba, Yaya toure n Ronaldo in the early parts of their respective career… but he dint buy them…
Thanks to AWs shortsightedness wen it comes to spending…we gotta settle for watchin Wannabes like walcott runnin pointlessly on t flanks doin nothin or warmin t doc’s table…
Dzeko is another player Tat “INTERESTS” Wenger… If tomorrow thers news tat bendtner’s back then AW Wont buy nobody in t jan transfer window…
Take tat in writin… T lone arsenal signin in Jan (If ny signings r gonna happen in Jan at 1st place) is Blaise Mataudi… as an alternative for song for 4.5 million… Dunno wat impact he’ll hav on our side…
GOD SAVE US!!!!

I personally dont think he’ll sign anybody… specially as we are playing 4-3-3 and already have Eduardo and Bentdner playing out of position… Bendtner is back in January.
If we were gonna sign a striker it would have been when RvP got injured but there was no window then… by January we’ll have Bendtner back.
And Jay Simpson will also want to fight for a place next season… so really, I cant see Wenger signing a new striker unless is like a Drogba pt 2 for free.
Oh and Wenger’s long plan for Walcott is also a central striker… so if anything… we need a new right winger, not a striker.

anonymous – December 23rd, 2009 at 8:04 pm:
Jay Simpson’s away on a year long loan with QPR…
Walcott aint good enuf to be either a striker or a winger…
bendtner aint a 20+ goals per seaosn kind striker yet…
dudu’s still gotta find his feet n t goals n he’ll take some more time…
in such a situation t whole onus of scorin goals fall on t shoulders of Arshavin n Cesc… if these 2 guys dont then we pretty much end up losin or drawin t game…
We definitely need this guy in t jan transfer window…. but we most definitely wont get him….

Dzeko will b a fabulous signin cos wat Arsenal lacks now is a person who’s not afraid 2 bully defenders, have 2 eyes 4 d net, smart, tall, prolific n strong etc.
Dzeko’s all dis with age 2 his advantage n will definately make a mockery of CR 40goals a season cos we already have creativity in abundance 2 give him basket full of assist per game.
With a strike force comprising of RVP, Dzeko, Arshavin, Eduado, Walcott, Bendtnar n Vela- we’ll have youth, height, pace n experience- we’ll b sacred of neither opposition nor injuries.
Finally his signin will bring d necessary competition 4 shirt thus causin every player 2 up their game. Pls Wenger Arsenal fans world wide besiege u 2 splash dis once.

Wow, nice headline grabbing there. If any of you had any sense you would know that Arsene did NOT drop ANY hints whatsoever about who he is looking at. He was simply asked if he would consider signing a player who was Euro-tied, and he said he would. End of story. If you all would get your heads out of your butts and read the whole interview, then maybe you won’t get yourself in a twist if/when he doesn’t sign anybody at all.
I rate Dzeko highly, and have always enjoyed watching him play at Wolfsburg. I think he would be an ideal fit to our 4-3-3, and he has all the qualities needed to make it big in England. Unfortunately, I believe Dzeko is headed for Milan either in January or the summer. Chamakh won’t be coming either, and although I do like Bojan Krkic, I don’t think he fits the lead striker role yet, so he won’t make the impact that we need.

Just break the bank this one time and bring in Dzeko, with him on board The Gunners have a realistic crack at the league and F.A cup. He scored 36 goals last year in a league which is better than most give credit. Imagine what he will do with Faboulas Fabregas, Arshavin and The Purse (when he returns) providing the assists.
