Aston Villa 0-1 Liverpool Premier League Highlights (Video)
by Mad Dog and Glory on December 29th, 2009 92 commentsAston Villa and Liverpool appeared to be playing out a draw at Villa Park as both sides failed to convert the chances to clinch all three points in this top four chase until Fernando Torres popped up with a late winner.
Liverpool keeper Pepe Reina pulled off the save of the match as Stewart Downing failed to find the back of the net from close range. Liverpool had the most of the chances and put on a great deal of pressure on the Villa back four and finally made that pressure tell as Fernando Torres scored a crucial late winner.
The Spaniard secured his 50th league goal for the Anfield outfit after a Stephen Warnock gifted Liverpool a chance that Torres lethally put away.

i said before the game i take a scrappy win
anonymous - December 29th, 2009 at 11:07 pm
well we scraped that one, its only a good win if we beat spurs next but a welcome 3 points all the same.
Dirk kuyt for me is offering nothing at the moment, he needs a break and babel should have gotten the nod for a starting place.
anonymous - December 29th, 2009 at 11:07 pm
without Torres, gerrard and REINA!! we would be in Bottom 3!! NO DOUBT!
kermit - December 29th, 2009 at 11:08 pm
bit harsh on villa really, they didnt deserve to lose this game
guillem balague muppet - December 29th, 2009 at 11:09 pm

Aquaman - December 29th, 2009 at 11:10 pm
That’s what i like to see!
If the game had ended 0-0 i would have been encouraged, because things look like they are changing. At last i can say that Gerrard played well and looked like himself.
Though on occasion we were shaky in defense we held firm. Thank god for pepe (best gk in the league. No question). He was amazing. Carra and agger did well. Johnson still looks a tad nervous. Insua was brilliant. He is now our best crosser in the starting 11.
Aq looked good as well. The old comments of him not tracking back are proven false. Kuyt is still in dire shape. Probably our worst player. Sadly johnson was probably second so our right side is in trouble.
Yossi didn’t do much again but at least he wasn’t running directly into people. He’s getting better again.
That leaves that man torres. What more can be said? The greatest goal machine in our history according to his new record. And i second the motion. Congrats nando! Hope you get many many more!
I have 3 men of the match (which is cheating, i know). Pepe (for keeping up in the game), insua (for being our best outfield player) and torres (for being torres). Stevie just doesn’t make the list, but he’s a definite 4th.
This win is massive. Hearing the fans sing again and watching the boys celebrate was wonderful. A couple more performances like this and we’ll be back to strength again.
Think rafa did alright today as well,
Aquaman - December 29th, 2009 at 11:12 pm
Oh yes. Forgot that lucas guy. He did his job admirably. Nothing spectacular, but solid.

we were poor to be honest, i switched off with five mins to go
KJT_19 - December 29th, 2009 at 11:17 pm
we have a hard run of games coming up which will make or break our season, lets hope we’ve turn a corner two wins on the bounce one against a good team away from home. if we lose some of the next few matches i think its over for top four but if we win were in a good position to at least finish 4th
dave - December 29th, 2009 at 11:20 pm
your a true fan kermit! switching off with 5 mins to go.

anonymous - December 29th, 2009 at 11:26 pm
wow before the game started i sensed us getting a later winner and we did whos assed if it was a scrappy win no doubt about it that win will give us huge confidence going into the spurs game if we beat spurs 2 points behind top 4 place so its sound
only if we beat spurs though
and lads benitez went positive he actually brought on a attack minded player in babel
dave - December 29th, 2009 at 11:27 pm
i thought it was an entertaining game, nothing spectacular but.
insua was our best player, johnson was terrible, kuyt needs to be sold, aquilani got match pratice in a game that got quite heated, lucas played well, everyone has to be playing shit for benayoun to play good, obviously torres and gerrard are short of match fitness but they are getting there.this game was a massive confidence boost and it is all there for us to go on a winning run.oh and babel had a chance but as usual didnt take it,swap him for arda turan,i’m sure mr rijkaard would have him off our hands once turan states he wants to leave.
guillem balague muppet - December 29th, 2009 at 11:28 pm
yeah he brought on babel but stuck him on the left, babel needs a go at playing wide right instead of kuyt
dave - December 29th, 2009 at 11:30 pm
i would still rather have arda turan than babel
Aquaman - December 29th, 2009 at 11:32 pm
Babel showed once again why he is never played as a striker. He got a free header 6 yards out. And he missed. Not the goal, but the ball.
He also came onto the pitch full of energy and determination, and then he stopped. Where was he hiding?
guillem balague muppet - December 29th, 2009 at 11:33 pm
i could live with that but if babel is kept he should play ahead of kuyt even though i think hes a bad mannered little bastard
isaac hunt - December 29th, 2009 at 11:37 pm
reina = best in the world
torres = best in the world
gerrard = best in the world.
everything else that we have is poor to be honest. great result though. i thought o neil was a good manager but after watching them today i would not want him to replace rafa. they only play for corners and just hoof it for carew to flick on and agbonlahor to run. they are not a top 4 side at all.
isaac hunt - December 29th, 2009 at 11:38 pm
skrtel and kuyt should retire!!!!
anonymous - December 29th, 2009 at 11:49 pm
liverpool got lucky, they really sucked tonight
Sullivan - December 29th, 2009 at 11:52 pm
hey why dont liverpool buy Ronaldo and Messi to replace Bable and Riera? Or why dont we get Sergio Ramos instead of Insua? Why not De Rossi instead of Lucas,
Shut the fuck up guys who are whining. The team is winning, thats all that matters
anonymous - December 30th, 2009 at 12:01 am
Good solid win for reds, made up,final third of pitch we are poor we need some class must take Kuyt out the team he is so poor does anybody think he is good enough to start for us Benayoun also been poor lately . Ive not been a fan of Insua but the kid played well. come on Benitez sort it out last chance saloon couple of decent attacking signings and stop worrying bout other teams we are Liverpool best club in the world.
Donavan Ried - December 30th, 2009 at 12:05 am
Good Evening guillem balague muppet, kermit, dave, isaac hunt, Liverpool FC Danny, and welcome to the site KJT_19 and Sullivan, and a very good evening to you Aquaman. Holiday good go I hope, plenty of movement in the diamond trade, (Nudge, Nudge, Wink, Wink, say no more)…lol
Well in a game we could so easily have loss win come a way with all 3 points. A fantastically taken goal by Torres….
Think that Glen Johnson showed little interest in getting back to defend both Saturday against Wolves and tonight against Villa. Overall we gave the ball away far too easily, yes weather may have played some part in it, but it still remains a worrying part of our game….. Insua played well again, and Aquilani had more minutes all positives
The negative were the team reverted to the usual defensive formation with Kuyt on the right and Aquilani sitting deep at times…… Would have like to have seen Babel on the right and maybe Aquilani and Gerrard swap positions…..
Again Villa proves how vulnerability we are from set pieces.
Glad for the points though. Now we need to complete the second half of the mini run and beat Tottenham……
guillem balague muppet - December 30th, 2009 at 12:06 am
hey sullivan everybody is entitled to their opinion, if you dont like it ignore or argue a different point dont tell people to shut up whining, they only want to see the club do better
anonymous - December 30th, 2009 at 12:12 am
Guillem,
your anon comment is stupid if my mum had a cock she would be my dad.
Kermit,
you are living up to your name by not watching the end of the match you are a muppet i hate bad fans i suppose you could not wait to get on here to slag the team off.
As it goes i thought we played better tonight and the team showed a more BALANCED look about it. balance is very much the key imo and even if aqua did not look fully fit he played his position so added balance to the side. Lucas was a man possesed tonight and he deserves a lot of the credit tonight by working so hard in the middle he allowed others to play there game.johnson was poor and so was kuyt to be fair, gerrard looked fresh and insua had a good game as did riena as usual.
Torres is the most amazing forward ive seen at anfield bar none one chance one goal and it was not an easy chance at that the keeper was well positioned most men would have blasted it straight and the yank but he finds angles that dont exist in most players imagination.
on the last note people who say babel is not getting a fair crack are blind he is poor at best alright when he scores its eye catching but he does not apply himself enough to deserve more chances he dissapears before youe eyes and a pro who picks up tens of thousends in wages a week should be able to at least connect with the ball when a free header comes his way i wish he would just go it is like a pink elephant in the room when he is on the bench.

:L sorry mate, that wasn’t me. I went to go watch the highlights. My little brother got on my computer aha. I take that back.
Evening Donavan Ried. I agree with you on the fact that Johnson is not concentrating on defending as much as he used to. I believe he would be better off in the 4-5-1 system if Rafa goes back to it. But the 4-4-2 is working for now but we can play alot better then that. I would like to see when Masherano comes back, if Aqualini plays defensive. I think Rafa has told him to sit deep untill Mash comes back. But the signs are good so far. Tottenham will be a challenge for us but they look week on the left side. Hopefully Rafa will get Torres running rampant!

Great result, lets just hope that Benitez isnt taking another attacking midfielder (Aqualani) and trying to convert him to a defensive midfielder (like Lucas)
Reds Lewis - December 30th, 2009 at 12:56 am
Kuyt is a squad player and hes not a right winger hes a goal poacher.
He played quite well when with ngog upfront, feeding off the spills…he tends to do that well…but cant really create much himself. He did have a penalty denied today tho.
Babel shouldve played on the right.
Our next game is extremely important, as is the one against a resilient stoke side…
6 points from the next two games is very important to get us back up there….
when we played totenham earlier we lacked creativity
weve got that now with aquilani.
In an ideal world, when mach comes back, benitez will play aquilani instead of lucas…but we all know that wont happen!

A great win, v.important to beat Villa, competing for the forth spot. Gerrard on the way back to his legendary status, Insua emerging, defending better than in some recent games. Aquilani had trouble with the pitch, (as most other players), but he was trying to make it happen….regaining confidence and fitness. Pepe as usual great. Torres one moment of greatness in 95 minutes, giving us a win. Agger has been a part of the spine of our team for a while now. Lucas, no more jeering. Kuyt, if we can transplant his heart into Babel, we would have a great player… Most of our offence was coming on the left side, Yossi, Kuyt are exhausted and should be rested. Dirk and shaky, (no confidence) Johnson could not create much together. Although Babel missed a clear chance, and did not do much, his speed was a threat and showed once more how much we need more speed on our team, bring in Turan asap. Get ready for the Spurs. Congratulations to the boys and the coaching staff!

Lucky its not Benayoun scoring
Otherwise we get stupid remarks like Liverpool wings ugly again with his ugly rat mug staring at us across newspapers
anonymous - December 30th, 2009 at 2:03 am
BTW, Dirk and Torres showed instincts of classic goal poachers in creating the goal out of nothing, Kuyt reacting quickly in snatching a “free” ball, and Torres in converting it with the best of finishes….Happy (or Happier New Year) for all of you!

Whoever made that ridiculous comment about the goal. Of course Drogba would’ve finished it. Taking no credit from Torres it was a nice finish but Drogba wou;d’ve finished it aswell. don’t get ahead of yourselves coz you got a scrappy win against a team who got totally owned by one player 3 days ago. I’m an Arsenal fan btw in case you were thinking my comments about Drogba were biased. I hate him, but he’s still the best striker in the league.

Please sell lucas. All our problems are in midfield. Only one player could change all our statistics and we should have player like Lassana Diara / Essien in midfield with Mascherano. We stop playing lucas and 75% of our issues will be resolved
anonymous - December 30th, 2009 at 8:05 am
Fully agree – I have tried as much as possible to support Lucas. Last night again he gives away foul after foul in dangerous positions. Posession is the name of the game, Lucas however lays the ball off to the opposition. (Kuyt was the same last night all heart but NO BRAIN)
...samlfc.... - December 30th, 2009 at 9:16 am
well what can i say it was a well taken goal from Torres and many of our outfield players played well e.g Gerrard and Insua…..and Reina
the game however could of gone either way as i thought Liverpool had the ball more while Aston villa looked more like scoring…..but enough of that its a great win, should be a confidence booster and looking forward to the Spurs game and the Reading game where hopfully we can see Pacheco playing the full 90 mins.
Aldo - December 30th, 2009 at 10:08 am
Good win it could have gone either way.
Great goal by Torres
Insua had a good game and I thought lucas did ok. But this zonal marking it’s a lottery we don’t look comfortable.
Aqualini struggled with the pace but he will come good once he has adjusted to it. Kuyt struggled along with Johnson
overall we need that we have to win at home to spurs we are due one there. Come on Redmen let’s push on.

Well done to liverpool for the win. Good to see Gerrard starting to find some form. Good to see lucas have a steady game and Reina sheer class as usual. Now the bads… Kuyt – an average player in bad form. Johnson and Insua (more johnson than Insua) Going forward not too many problems but defensivly both have a lot to learn. Babel – showed again he is an average player who is capable of flash’s of brilliance, how did he miss that header?. But in general positive signs (five attacking players started) and shows we are not dependent on keeping Masch.
RE: Boghossian – dont know if its been said yet or not but this transfer is apparently made up and some sort of joke. Funny.
Either way heard about him a while ago and from what I have seen and read he seems a bit like Crouch but without the touch, but decent none the less and at 500k I wouldn’t have said no.
anonymous - December 30th, 2009 at 11:18 am
Well liverpool played well they managed possession in the best way they know how to..that does not mean that they are back to their best,we still have problems with creativity in the final third…big problem as a matter of fact..but big up to the team they played with passion that has been lacking,Jonson forgot his role man..he forgets he is a defender at times but good game though
Kuyt, man, have no words for him he is not the player i have known he is becoming a liability…nevetheless that was not one of our goods game was afraid at all the opportunities aston villa had but that game was better than the previous ones. we can improve and benitez is stil the man Kermit slept well you are a disgrace..to the liverpool fotball republic.
KJT what you talking about,we have games that can make or break our season check the schedule man…hope confidence has come back.
Some comments are not worth talking about…they are crap..sullivan i echo your comments thanks for that we are tired of people saying we want liverpool to do better but the only thing they do is complain…
DaNiEL-- - December 30th, 2009 at 11:22 am

dave you are a true optimist, talking about winning runs
arda turan is totally gifted
anonymous - December 30th, 2009 at 11:53 am
My comments from last night’s game are:
- G Johnson gave away the ball too often and is a risk at the back.
- Kuyt has completely lost his touch and should not be in the starting XI
- Lucas is getting better and better but still need to time his tackles a little better (gives away too many freekicks in dangerous areas.
- Insua is also getting better
- Pepe+worldclass
- Stevie is getting better and shows more chracter on the pitch
- Torres was pretty anonymous last night until he scored, but what a finish…
It was not a beauty win but “a win is a win”. First time this season we score in extra time so far we have given away goals in extra time.

thw wingers were terrible as usual,i dont see kuyt improving coz he just doesnt have it, he aint quick, poor dribbler, poor crosses, poor technique. i think we should play him at the centre attacker, and benayoun he’s good to come out after half time. now i see arda is the perfect solution IF silva is impossible. ynwa!

Sullivan - December 30th, 2009 at 12:38 pm
Lucas actually had one of his better games, why are you guys slagging him. But eh, maby we can sell him for two million instead of fiftey pounds now
isaac hunt - December 30th, 2009 at 1:04 pm
kuyt is not a winger and when torres is fit he cannot play up front with him. jamie redknapp got it spot on when he says that we have got 3 world class players but we dont have any other great players. the wings are so bad at the moment and our defence still looks a bit dodgy. if we have any money next summer we need a centre back and two out and out wingers.
Danski_LFC9 - December 30th, 2009 at 1:23 pm
The only difference in the teams last night was the best striker in the world… until Torres netted in the last minute the rest of the game was a stalemate, but luckily only a handful of strikers in the world can finish like that and Nando is one of them!!!
Pepe again proved why he is arguable the best keep in the premier league.
Kuyt needs a permanent position on the bench, he’s got an awful touch this season, is unable to take on players when he has the ball, has no speed and if it wasn’t for his work rate I doubt he’d make the team.
Aquilani showed glimpses of why Rafa bought him, but is evident he is still trying to get used to the pace of the the Prem… as soon as his match fitness picks up i’m confident he will improve rapidly.
I think until the tranfer window comes in rafa needs to drop Gerrard back into mid field where he can run the show a little easier either in the centre or on the right.
We need more creative players on the pitch…
Reina
Johnson – Carragher – Agger – Aurellio
Gerrard – Aquilani – Mascherano – Benayoun
Babel – Torres
Hoogleboogybugleboy - December 30th, 2009 at 1:54 pm
This has to be the most negative Liverpool forum on the web. Ffs cheer up you load of moaning c*?!s. Liverpool were the better team last night and deserved the win. A mate of mine who supports Villa even agreed and he’s usually biased beyond belief. To win away from home in those conditions against a team as in form as Villa shows what great character the team has. The difference was again Torres’s brilliance but that is exactly the reason that he was bought. Kuyt was industrious and closed down well but he has a terrible touch. I reckon he would be better played as a defensive midfielder. All in all a good, solid team performance with not too many mistakes. Bring on Spurs so that I can stick it to another mate.
Aquilani4goals - December 30th, 2009 at 2:02 pm
Well what can I say, kurt kurt and again, should be warning the bench, pls do not blame babel he has not seen the football field for ages..we need a new right full back and i hope kelly will be fit soon to play in that position..johnson should be playin the right wing since he has decided to take upon himself a winger position.benny was really tired and flat…fantastic goal from torres though he was alway depossessed of the ball .great game for lucas, aquilani, insua…overall a valuable 3 point..
anonymous - December 30th, 2009 at 2:06 pm
That’s the beauty you don’t see torres all game and he pops up with one.I think most of the posts now have the measure of the team /players who are not good enough so surely RAfa and sammy must do ?
bod - December 30th, 2009 at 2:09 pm
Happy New Year lads. No point in adding ladies to that salutation
It was great to finally get the rub of the green last night, and the pub went mental when Torrres scored.
I was delighted with Reina’s handling last night, considering the woeful conditions. Although, I would say that being a keeper. At the end of the day, the back four competed and helped in keeping a clean sheet. These are the 5 people (including keeper) who are starved of much needed confidence. Hopefully, Johnson’s injury isn’t too serious. I know he didn’t have his best game, but he needs to keep the momentum of the back 4 going. Kelly is worthy replacement anyway.
Lucas battled hard and did his job. Aquilani is improving his match fitness and needs to harden up a wee bit, but that will come. Gerrard too is slowwwwly improving. I think the conditions didn’t suit Yossi, he could have done with a blanket over his little frame. Kuyt needs a break and he should stick Babel in there for a game or 2, that’s if he isn’t sold. I do think it would benefit the team if we had a tricky right footed winger to mix things up. Anyhoo, I’m not complaining. A win is a win a win.
Torres, what you can say about the man. The sign of a great striker is not doing an awful lot during the game, but one chance – one goal. Purfeck!!

so that was another win for us now its 2in 2. and although we didn’t beat
them comprehensively still its a win that matters in the end .
the task is to continue the winning streak …………..
no need to look at other teams comparisons wouldn’t do any good key is to keep up the consistency in the upcoming games.
hope rafa’s telling the same to the players …
1st half was sh*t in respect of the performances as well as luck .
we almost get eliminated from the C league bcoz of last minute goal.
hope in the second half of the season the injury time goals goes our way……..
BPL_WILL_BE_PAINTED_RED. - December 30th, 2009 at 3:05 pm
ALSO ,obviously it was a supercool finish which rarely anyone else(except torres)could have done and it shows the class of the player
proud that we have such a guy in the team.
but had it been anyone else i thought they would have tried to give the ball to
babel………(at least babel expected the ball )would have caused a mess but hats off to elnino……
.
also “NO MASCHERANO NO PROBLEM” just kidding JEST BEING LUCAS IS DOING JUST FINE ………
on jhonson he will take some time before he learns to curb his attacking instincts.. and play a defensive role when time demands ..hope rafa guides him well….
BPL_WILL_BE_PAINTED_RED. - December 30th, 2009 at 3:15 pm
the best position dirk kuyt could play right now is as a back up striker
coz he’s a striker isn’t it ?
i had always been his fan and this season had been dissapointing but
he had never been a real quik runner. he’s a backup shooter and an oppourtunist but this season the opportunity’s have been few and he has’nt been quite able to convert them, not only he many of the big stars too….A BAD SEASON as we say……..
so all the DIRK KUYT HATERS
Liverpool FC Danny - December 30th, 2009 at 3:18 pm
We should just Swap Kuyt+Voronin+4 million for Arda Turan and Sell Dossena and get Pandev for free. Apparently we are going for Erik Huseklepp but he will end up like Voronin or Kuyt. But he is pretty quick.
BPL_WILL_BE_PAINTED_RED. - December 30th, 2009 at 3:19 pm
SORRY! NO CHANCE OF him going out in the JAN WINDOW .
may be if he keeps the same up for the entire season rafa may sell him next

A Saudi prince has begun examining Liverpool’s accounts as he negotiates to buy all or part of co-owner George Gillett Jr.’s stake in the Premier League club, despite having concerns about its existing debt
.
Prince Faisal bin Fahd bin Abdullah al-Saud is carrying out due diligence with a view to buying into Gillett’s 50 percent-share through his sports investment firm F6, according to its director Barry Didato. The prince has been given a period of exclusivity of several months in terms of negotiating with Gillett.
“The prince is looking to buy anywhere from 0 to 100 percent (of Liverpool), but he doesn’t need to have a controlling interest,” Didato, director of strategic investment at F6, said.
“On Saturday, Prince Faisal signed an exclusivity deal between the groups. We are at the stage of due diligence and taking George’s lead. It is moving pretty quickly. At the moment he is only working with George Gillett and I’d certainly think it would have to happen by the end of the end of this year.”
Prince Faisal is not in talks with Tom Hicks, who owns the other half of the club……This is from Express India, Dec.29, 2009 issue!

Big improvement having 5 attacking players on the pitch, still the tactics negate that by having aquilani holding and kuyt on the right ends up doing more defensive work than attacking. Insua again outshone johnson by a mile. The defence looks a lot more solid after being unchanged for a couple of weeks unfortunately now with johnsons injury we will be forced to change it, hope darby or kelly get a place and we leave carragher at CB. Had 0-0 written all over it till torres struck amazing finish to hit the ball the way he did and manage not to drag it wide was real quality. We still aren’t creating nearly enough but we are building and looking more solid. Not going into the whole babel for RM thing again because i think rafa just doesn’t want to admit he is wrong, its so obvious and while kuyt just again and again offers nothing he will still get picked every week there.
kermit - December 30th, 2009 at 4:35 pm
i didnt see that much improvement to be honest, we were pretty poor for most of the game.
i dont hate kuyt , he is a useful player, he is not a winger, he played great with ngog up front against wigan , he shouldn t play every game and babel should get a run on the right
i dont see why kuyt cant play up front with torres.

I have to agree that Kuyt should be dropped from playing wide right. I do not however think that Babel is the answer especially with the way that Johnson gets forward. We would be far too exposed on the right as Babel defends about as well as he attacks. Badly. I have always wanted Babel to do well but he just does not have it in him. Blame the manager all you like but each player should play for the manager whoever he is. The guy is a pro footballer not a little kid who needs mollycoddling all the time. Kuyt would make a good defensive midfield player in my opinion. I notice that no one is praising Benitez for last nights win. I bet had we of lost 1 nil to a 93rd minute goal he would be to blame for that.

I’m watching the game again now Kermit and we were by far the better team. A vast improvement from the last game which is all you can ask. We were away at an in form Villa in terrible weather conditions. I’d call that a great show of character and quality.

Now, that we know about Johnson likely to be missing for a few months, that (as bad as it is) gives us a chance to experiment against Reading, as we won’t be able to rely on Glen’s offensive skills.
1. We could start Babel as RM against Reading and see what he can do there. If it doesn’t work out we can bring Kuyt later, he needs and deserve rest anyway.
2. I have no info what stage are negotiations for Turan at, and if even we have any chance to get him. If Babel is included as a part of that exchange, then of course we would be taking a huge risk of injury, if not, and he is staying, I would play him. With Insua, on the rise, I think I would be happy to play with a traditional winger, and play Kelly or Carra (with Skrtel playing the CB).
3. As much, as I would welcome a good showing in the FA Cup, it seems that the Spurs game is crucial, a 6 pointer, a win would further strengthen our morale, a victory would be a disaster.
4. Has anyone heard anything about state of negotiations between Gillette and the Saudis? |If there is progress there, towards a possible deal, the long term prospects and short term decisions could be totally different. BTW, I quoted at 3:56 pm, from a report suggesting things are moving well. Let’s hope, that they are!
And lastly, in the spirit of Holidays, let’s all congratulate our team on 2 consecutive victories, even if we sometimes disagree on the coach.

mark g – December 30th, 2009 at 8:21 pm…. Don’t know if you know it or not but I am originally from Reading, lived there most of my life until moving to Tottenham, London. So I keep an eye on them, and since Steve Coppell stepped down as manager, and they lost Kevin Doyle, Steven Hunt and a few other they have been very poor.
I think we could, and should play a team against Reading that consists of at least 7 youth players, possibly 8….
Don’t really believe Babel should play as in all likely hood he will be gone in the January window anyway, the same applies to Voronin, Degen, and Dossena….. Rafa need to think about the Spurs game and 4th spot
Retryboy - December 30th, 2009 at 10:53 pm
Don’t see why people think to have a real winger you have to have a defensive full back or vice versa. Capello plays johnson/lennon whats the difference? If anything lets the attacking full back get forward whenever safe not forcing them to provide all the width. Babel had his 15 minutes on the right set up the winner at west ham. Was only a week later we played arsenal in the carling cup was the perfect opportunity then to play him RM but rafa played kuyt who needed a rest. Donovan is right he is gone anyway doesn’t mean we should be happy seeing a 22 year old who can solve a problem position for us leave for £6m whilst a 29 year old who offers nothing in that position and would fetch the same money is left as our only option because of Rafa’s blindness and favouritism.

D. R.:
Reading, I have a lot of sympathy for a small club like them, they were hitting above their weight for a while.
Going back to our next few games. I would use Reading’s tilt to get ready for the Spurs. With Johnson gone, I think playing Babel would have some merit, if he works out this weekend he could be very useful against T-ham. If you play Kelly or Carragher as RB they will not create much offence and Kuyt is not exactly galloping up the field. With nothing happening on the right, Harry will plug the left side, and we’ll play very narrow… Another point, if Riera is fit again, I would play him and any other players that needs some game action in case we need them for Spurs. I would also rest others like Yossi or Kuyt. Then I would be more than happy to play Pacheco, Kelly and any othere deserving youngster.
