Sir Alex set to cut his losses with England International.
Manchester United are willing to listen to offers in the region of £4 million for goalkeeper Ben Foster, according to reports in The Sunday Mail.
Foster had been widely tipped to replace Edwin Van der Sar as United’s future number one goalkeeper but struggled this season for both club and country this season making a series of high profile errors.
In Van der Sar’s absence Foster started a number of games for United but has been displaced from the first team by Tomasz Kuszczak. Furthermore, in recent games, 20-year-old goalkeeper Ben Amos has also taken Foster’s place on the substitute’s bench.
The 26 year-old England international has made four appearances for his country thus far but may have to move clubs in January if he is to make Fabio Capello’s squad for the World Cup in South Africa.
Sir Alex Ferguson has been rumoured to be looking for a long term replacement for veteran Dutch keeper Van der Sar with Schalke 04’s Manuel Neuer and Fiorentina’s Sebastien Frey possible transfer targets.
Frey’s agent Giovanni Branchini said: “I don’t reject that Seba is on United’s agenda – but the matter is closed until the end of the season.
“He has a contract until 2013 and Fiorentina don’t want want to discuss the issue until May. I personally think this is logical.”
Schalke 04 keeper Manuel has also been widely tipped to move to Old Trafford after the World Cup finals where he will star for Germany. (Give Me Football – Official PFA Website)
Lets be honest, Ben Foster is very unlikely to become a regular at Manchester United and that is mainly down to the fact that he is one of those keepers you can just not rely on to not make an error and his mere presence behind the back four has an adverse affect on the defenders in front of him such is his inability to command confidence from those around him.
With Edwin Van der Sar set to call time on his playing career,a decision that may be sped up due to health concerns in relation to his wife, Foster and to a lesser extent Kuszczak just do not appear up for the job of custodian at Old Trafford.
This leaves Sir Alex Ferguson desperately trying to identify a suitable keeper purchase and as such the Manchester United boss has been linked with a myriad of top notch goalies and it appears that likes of Manuel Neuer and Sebastian Frey are the most likely to be snapped up even though the likes of Artur Boruc and Julio Cesar would have been better choices if they could be persuaded to leave their respective clubs Celtic and Inter Milan.
£4m would not be a fair price though for Ben Foster because he is still a decent keeper with good potential and at 26 is still a youngster in goalkeeper terms. It remains to be seen who will swoop for the England keeper but I am sure there will be a healthy list of Premier League sides willing to take a risk on Foster.
