Milan Jovanovic’s representatives have held talks with Liverpool, skysports.com understands.
The Standard Liege star is out-of-contract in the summer and has made it clear he intends to take up the option of a Bosman transfer.
Valencia had hoped to land him in January, but now Jovanovic is holding talks with a number of interested parties.
AC Milan and Atletico Madrid are among the sides keen to seal a deal and are also believed to have discussed terms.
Now Liverpool have met with the Serbian’s representatives with a view to bringing him to Anfield in the summer. (Sky Sports)
This could prove to be a very wise capture. Clearly as the 28 year old is running out his contract we will not pay a dime for the player but the flip side to this good bit of financial business is that the Serbian International has no experience in what could be called a top performing league. Liverpool need new firepower and there is no doubt that Jovanovic knows where the back of the net is, 68 goals in three and a half seasons says it all.
It is also worth noting that Milan has been incredibly successful whilst on the international stage scoring five goals in the World Cup qualifying group that saw Serbia beat France to the top spot. He is a very robust well built forward who should be able to cope with the physical demands of the Premier League and could work well alongside Fernando Torres as his attributes could work well in what could be a good strike partnership.
I guess having to be careful with the pennies can actually have positive benefits as it means that Rafa does really have to work out how best to bring in good players at little expense rather than flashing the cash.

WELL SAID ……………
Our financial constraints indeed are doing us a lot of bad things……………………
we sure need 2 or 3 match winners like silva, aguero, turan and take anyname…………
bcoz these average signings too take a lot of money in wages.
SO IT SHOULD BE A RULE TO SIGN ONLY THE BEST IN THE MARKET …….
AND ITS NOT TOO HYPOTHETICAL IF YOU SEE AT IT.
TURAN FOR 15/18M WOULD BE A BARGAIN..+ A CLASS SINGNING
BUT IF WE INDEED SIGN HIM IT WOUN’T BE A FAULT FOR 2 REASON’S
1 . HE’S NOT BAD …………….HE SCORES EVERY SECOND MATCH HE PLAYS
2.PLUS WE NEED A LITTLE BIT OF EXPERIENCE IN STRIKING DEPT IN ABSENCE OF TORRES AND THAT’S IT.
FOR WE HAVE LIKES OF PACHEO AND NEMETH IN THE MAKING …………..
SO HE COULD COVER FOR THAT PERIOD………………
I KNOW THE REASON FOR UR DISGUST BUT CAN;T DO ANYTHING EXCEPT AGREEING WITH U.

Yet another piece of transfer wizardry by the boss.
For all the comments of Rafa not having man management skills, he always seems to get his man once he has a chat. Torres, Johnson, Aquilani, Babel etc etc all had dozens of other clubs after them. But as soon as they chatted with Rafa, suddenly the only place they want to go is Liverpool. Rafa is the transfer guru.

FACT-watching liverpool play Rafa’s style is sacrilege to all that have gone before FACT-i am fed up with people holding up one 2nd place in 5 years as a great achievement when if it wasn’t for his love affair with lucas and bloody defensiveness we would have won the title!! If you mean as a striker then Jones, no question. Babel doesn;t have the composure required.
Hmm. Actually yes, I’d rather have Jones. Even out of the striker role. Babel has been pretty much useless to us, and (while I’d still prefer Cole to Jones) Jones will give us some strength and height up front.

good point aquaman if their is something good about Rafa is that he gets in some good players at times. i think his best buys were Alonso Torres and Garcia people forget about how good Garcia was he was the man who scored the goals that got us into the Champions league Final and The Fa cup against Chelsea.

anonymous - January 20th, 2010 at 1:40 pm
Rafa is the one that keeps saying one game at a time so surely last season is completely irrelevant. The fact is that Rafa has lost the plot this season and has to go, he has no chance of turning this round, he doesn’t have a plan B and plan A is not bloody working and never will.
loading...
Retryboy - January 20th, 2010 at 1:41 pm
Garcia was totally wasteful so frustrating to watch then again sure he was never played on his right side if i remember rightly
loading...
heimdall - January 20th, 2010 at 1:47 pm
Garcia was equally annoying. Rafa’s best signings are Torres, Alonso and Reina but lets not forget the ones that didn’t quite work out like Dossena, Degan, Babel, Keane, Josemi etc etc etc.
BTW if we finsih outside of top 4 this year then we are screwed, think about a Leeds type scenario, do you still want to give rafa the extra time to magically turn it around. The only thing that is saving us at the moment is that our competitors for 4th are also stumbling a bit but Man City are looking stronger and stronger every game and Villa and Spurs are much better sides than us currently.

ok this year 2010 rafa started fine by getting rid of dossena voronin and getting maxi ( if he is 100 % fit ), but why is it that for every step forward he has to go three back.

nothing we say will make any bit of difference unfortunatly because i think if the club did listen to our views and ideas they might learn something then again rafa would be too arogant for that, his masterful idea always work wonderfully as proved this season the fact is his arogance blocks him and the club from making any progress he cant admitt mistakes i.e signing kuyt as a striker oh that hasnt worked ill turn him into a winger, thats just one example. persoanlly i think he has lost the plot and who can argue against that after his post match interview of the stoke game quoting the attendance repeatedly inst the answer to every question ever asked rafa. why cant he just come out and say yes we didnt play well, my team selection was wrong, my tactics dont work i should of scrapped zonal marking last year im going to try something new. i would respect that alot more than his constant “we need to concentrate on the next game” becasue we will use the same team and the same tactics like this game that proved they dont work but no i cant be wrong im rafa benitez master tactician. sorry to rant on and on but the man winds me up lol. on the brighter side though i believe in the club and believe things will look up soon enough and i defineatly wont turn my back on liverpool.

About insults, no I have never insulted you, except that about wishing to lose games, so stop unfoundly accusing me!!! And no, are last argument wasn’t over Babel. I to think he could be great player, and I hope he will still do that at Liverpool, but I just can’t see it happening. And stop with personal insults, it’s childish man.

A
Regarding Milan Jovanovic – “Prolific” a bit misleading I feel. He averages about a goal every 2 games in the Jupiler which isn’t that great in my opinion considering the standard of the league and the fact he’s at one of the best teams in it. Lets not forget Kuyt was “Prolific” in Holland!
In truth I don’t know much about him and his name has’nt come up on my radar before this liverpool link.. but he’s 28 now, which leads me to ask the questions, why hasn’t he already made a move to a bigger European club if he’s so good? and Would he be linked to bigger clubs if he still had a few years left on his contract?
Money troubles aside would liverpool be interested in signing him if he were say 5m? (not sure of his market value so saying 5m for arguements sake) I don’t believe we would be. It sounds like another (albeit slightly better) “Voronin” punt.

Like your team but would rather not see Degan in. From what i saw in the Stoke game reminded me of playing as a kid no passing threw the midfield just kick the ball as far as you can. He also missed a wide open Mascherano up threw the midfield. All tho I do agree that Bable and Kuyt should be upfront today.

have been an avid reader of this site for many a month and read with great interest comments and opinions of various people on this site. Being a season ticket holder for 8 years at anfield and been a avid follower for over 25 years i believe that at the moment the liverpool team finds its self in as worse a position for many a year . I dont necessary believe its solely down to rafa although at times his selection and tactics have many people scratching their heads. The american owners obviously havent helped and the delay in the impending move to a new stadium as obviously hampered our revenue in the upcoming years. I believe at the moment the premier league is in transition clubs such as ourselves manure and indeed arsenal are all struggling for money and so much so there could well be a marked difference at the top of the premier league in 5 years time then their is now. This is not to say we cant be at the top of the pile. The money that has been spent over the past few years wont be spent again in the near future so shrewd buys and expert scouting are whats needed. the aqasition of numerous up and coming talent from accross europe could well be our saving grace . You could probably name 5 or 6 that could possibley do a job now for us now if rafa only had that bit of faith after all could a pacheco or nemeth of ayala or kelly etc etc do any worse than the present platers at the moment. Liverpool are and have been for some time a two player team take both our star players out and we struggle. That is not to say with out them we cant win games but to go on a sustained winning run would be very difficult . I will trundle to Anfield this evening in the hope of a performance that will bring back my faith in the team and the manager. I honestlly dont now. But what i do know is that rafa will start with one upfront and a defensively minded first eleven. and hopefully grind out a result .
Branigan
I will log on properly when i get back home

“im happy lucas is suspended that way more chances for Aquilani”
Since when has Lucas held back Aquilani’s chances? and why would we want to drop our best outfield player this season?
I hope we don’t play 4-4-2, we struggle to find one good replacement when Torres is out let alone two! Playing 5 in the middle would allow more protection against there nippy players like Lennon if he plays. With injurys our strength is our Midfield not our strikers so lets use it. We saw at the weekend how little the forwards can do if the midfield can’t build the play and that was only against the Mighty Stoke!

yes retry i agree to be honest thinking about it ngog and torres wouldnt work and neither would bable and torres but something needs to change we have been playing badly for quite a few games now and yet the only realy changes that have been made are because of injury why doesnt rafa try new things when current idea are not working i agree with branigan aswell the youth lads cant do much worse and if anything they have more fight and desire so why not give a few of them a run out. if it doesnt work sub them off for more snr players

Sigh.
Just because he’s free that does not mean that he’s crap. Some players leave for free because their clubs have refused to sell them to other bigger clubs due to their importance. Saying that he’s the next Voronin is very close minded. Remember that Michael Owen was signed on a free and we used to sing his name with pride.
Branigan: Welcome. I assume the introduction was to say that you’ve only signed up recently (If I’m wrong then forgive me, I’ve been away). Anyways good post. Look forward to reading more.
Jed: Sigh. Just when I thought that you might have caught the civil virus (which causes good manners), you prove me wrong. Oh well. Guess I shouldn’t be surprised.
Reds Lewis: Indeed he may prove to be a waste of wages, but the difference is that Rafa isn’t restricted as rigidly in this department. So sign him for free now, sell him in a year and you’ve got more transfer funds for someone else. As should have been the case with Voronin (but the yanks hid his money in their secret hidey hole under their pillows so that he couldn’t find it).

Babel was considered a “talent” but he has fucked that up himself, NOT RAFA! It’s not Rafa’s fault that he comes from a football club who teach their youngsters 1 way of playing… The Ajax formation…. Superstars to have ever emerged from the Ajax academy are general in the center of the field, Center back, Center midfield and Center Forward, the only winger that was any good to come from Ajax was Marc Overmars and even then he only became really successful at undisciplined sides like Arsenal and Barcelona who in that time played with bags of freedom… Rafa has given him the time and he is still as predictable as when he started…. Whenever i see him one on one with any full back you always knows he is going to cut in field, you also know that 80% of the time he is going to lose possession and that puts our defence under pressure… Anybody who blames Rafa for Babel’s lack of showing his potential is a football illiterate and blind as a bat!

Mickeyfinn1983 - January 20th, 2010 at 5:50 pm
bullshit! Klaas Jan Huntelaar was their center forward and before him it was Charisteas, Ryan Babel is and has always been a left winger or in the Ajax formation a Left Forward,Never a centre forward!

I think Jed is hilarious, he thinks he has the right to comment on football when the only reason Chelsea have won anything is because they had the most expensive squad ever when their ‘history’ started. Quarter of a billion by the way, Chelsea would be in a worse position than Liverpool if it wernt for Abramovich
loading...
Retryboy - January 20th, 2010 at 5:53 pm
Mickeyfinn why do you think he cuts inside all the time? Because he is right footed and played on the left? Radical thinking i know could play him on the right where he has had about 4 outings none longer than half an hour and looked quality each time. 15 minutes there this season against west ham and set up the winner with a great cross oh and about 4 minutes at reading before rafa swapped him with Kuyt to play up front with ngog as you have seen above we have been discussing how that would never work like ngog/Torres but hey what do we know. We only say things before games and then read the exact same things in the posts after the game. Rafa has stuck by lucas for god knows how many games and eventually got an average player…proved everyone wrong there eh rafa? If Babel had been given quarter of his chances then he would be a world star and before you say its because of how he trains open your eyes to the fact that rafa only plays between 2 and very rarely 4 attacking players with Gerrard, Kuyt and Torres taking automatic places god knows why in Kuyts case there is only one place left for Babel and 10 other attacking players to fight for could that be why hardly any attacking players actually do well here?

Yossi benayoun Scored 9 goals and had 8 assists….. Albert Riera scored 5 goals contributed to 6 assists…. RYAN BABEL has scored 9 goals in 63 fucking games!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

True, but in his case are we realy to believe a bigger European club couldn’t prize him away from SL, and only now at the age of 28 with his contract almost up do Europe’s finest have the chance to aquire his talents? Now I’m not saying he is crap but his stats arn’t that impressive considering where he plays. I feel people have just concern to worry he could be another Voronin.
“Remember that Michael Owen was signed on a free and we used to sing his name with pride.”

nah jed i just think this is it chips are down time its a big match, we are at home and we all seem to do well whenever there is a big one coming up, we beat utd when we desperately needed too and i foresee a big performance tonight
i also thoiught that chelsea would steam roller the premiership this year.
utd are living on past glories and rooney
arsenal are a good side but lack some steel still
man city will be big not there yet though, missing a few midfielders and a left back
we still dont have a bad squad when everyone is fit, we dont have the finances to have squad players like chelsea have. i mean you have the likes of deco sat on the bench every game.
chelsea were brillaint against sunderland, i watched the game and anyone that says chelsea dont play attractive football at the moment is kidding themselves.

HE DOES LOSE POSSESSION BUT THEN EVERY BODY DOES THAT COULD ALWAYS BE IMPROVED UPON ………….
POINT IS WHAT HAPPENS WHEN HE SUCCESSFULLY TAKES THE BALL PAST THE DEFENDER ….GOAL…………..WE CALL IT
HE TRIES DIFFERENT …………………………..THAT’S IT……………………………..
Mickeyfinn1983 NICE OBSERVATION ……….ABOUT AJAX FORMATION…………..
BUT IT DOESN’T PROVES A SHIT ABOUT WHETHER BABEL IS A GOOD PLAYER OR NOT ………………………………..
I CAN’T PREDICT ABOUT HIS FUTURE …………..BUT FOR SURE HE HAS A FUTURE IF NOT HERE THAN ELSEWHERE…………………………………………
For example, last season Dirk Kuyt scored 13 goals and had 9 assists to his name….. Yossi benayoun Scored 9 goals and had 8 assists….. Albert Riera scored 5 goals contributed to 6 assists…. RYAN BABEL has scored 9 goals in 63 fucking games!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

One of my dearest friends who lives in Belgium is an Ajax supporter and when i lived there we always used to watch footie together… He would watch the Liverpool games with me and i would watch the Ajax games, it ended up to be fantastic conversations…. Ryan Babel was on many occassions the center of discussion because he rated him highly and i didn’t… I always liked Sneijder, Van Der Vaart, Vermaelen and their current goalkeeper Stekelenburg… The reason i didn’t like him was not because he couldn’t react on instinct, which he can, it’s when he receives the ball and is given a second to think about it, which for me is the most necessary skill that will make or break you and in Babel’s case it’s unfortunately break.
Another thing i have observed, which didn’t come from those days but from watching him in a liverpool shirt is his lack of game intelligence and how quickly he lets his head down…. When Babel comes on as a substitute or starts in the starting line up you can always see whether he is going to have a good game or a bad one…. The first dribble, if this is a success he will have a good game or should i say a good 5 to 10 minute spell. But, whenever the defender gets the better of him he just loses the plot and starts giving the ball away at every opportunity….
People on here are getting my point wrong… I am not against Babel i just don’t think he warrants a first team selection…. Many on here are blaming our poor form on the fact that Rafa has lost the plot because he doesn’t play Babel but when he does and we lose, its still Rafa’s fault because babel played “Badly” because he doesn’t get enough time in the team….. WRONG!
WE ARE LIVERPOOL FOOTBALL CLUB FFS! You don’t get freebies at big clubs you have to earn the right to put on that red jersey not the other way around!

Shouldn’t use wikipedia as a source mickey they just use premier league goals and Babel scored 11 in his first season here alone 5/13 in the champions league! Liverpool totals 97 apps 18 goals 13 assists total mins 4573 averaging 41 mins he gets a goal every 254 mins in his liverpool career works out better than one in 3 and gets you a goal or assist every 147 mins so every game and a half he will get you a goal or assist played out of position and Kuyt?? Managed one assist in 20 hours of football this season. Know who i would have in my team. Google liverpool-Kop ryan Babel very interesting reading.

I have read it and still doesn’t change my mind…. Probably every player apart from the back 4, goalkeeper, Gerrard and Torres have been Subbed in 60% of the games…. It isn’t rocket science back 4 + Reina + Gerrard + Torres + Kuyt = 8, so that inevitably leaves 3 players who will see a lot of the bench and will be subbed on most occassions….
The best example i can give is Yossi Benayoun, he was used on many occassions as a sub last season until when he was given the opportunity, he took it and established himself to be in the starting line up….
On a note, Witch hunts like that article, don’t take too much notice of them mate, because they misrepresent statistics to prove their point…. Example, “in the season 08/09, Liverpool won 70% of their games when Babel started” Well of course, we only lost 2

@ Kermit – when you beat united, yes it was against the odds and no, i didnt think it would happen, but then again, gerrard and torres were playing….this is a team who has already beaten you 3-1 and are getting two of their strikers back for this….good luck but i think i’ll be collecting on this one

Mickey finn-still think your maths is a bit out Reina, plus back four, plus Gerrard, Torres and Kuyt = 8 yes but what about the 2 holding midfielders you have forgotten them which leaves one position that gets subbed all the time. Yossi doesn’t command a starting place much to my annoyance as he should be central behind Torres and Gerrard CM not holding in a 4-4-2. As for the statistics think the ones you came on with had mislead you a lot more seeing as though if you look at things like that Aquilani has had 9 appearances all competitions 0 assists 0 goals what a terrible player eh lol think you even get an appearance for being an unused sub so obviously the minutes played matter!! The statement about the 2008/2009 isn’t misleading at all there is a big difference in winning and not losing someone should tell rafa that. Anyways off to the pub come on lads!! Babel hat-trick lol
loading...
...samlfc.... - January 20th, 2010 at 7:59 pm
Kuyt could play second striker as i think that him and Tevez are similar but Tevez scores more goals. if we had 2 out and out strikers i think it wouldn’t work as they will both concentrate on getting goals and so they will both shoot at any possibility instead of a clever pass like what Tevez does.
i do think Kuyt should have a game or 2 as second striker with N’gog…..i think it might just work.

Mickeyfinn1983 - January 20th, 2010 at 8:03 pm
last time i checked 4 +1(Reina) + 1(Gerrard) + 1(Torres) + 1(Kuyt)= 8……..11-8= 3…… So unless you are one of those 8 you are either going to be a sub or be subbed!

Retry does NOT slag the Rafa for the sake of it, when he has criticism of him, he states why. MOST IRWT ers, will come on here and abuse them and say RAFA is the man for the job, but never have I seen one IRWT come on here an state 5 reasons why he is the best, how he is going to turn around the season, and why someone else could not do better.
GET IT INTO YOUR BRAINS, you do not have to agree with donovan, retry or myself, but dont come on here saying we shouldnt support liverpool. You have no right to do so, and your simply wrong.
If you think rafa is the man to lead us to success, FAIR ENOUGH
If you think Rafa should be sacked, Fair ENOUGH
IF you continue to SUPPORT Liverpool….GOOD ENOUGH

What we do is, sell Torres and Gerard for money. We could sell Torres to manchester city for… 40-60Million euro. You know why because he always get injured and always lost the possession of the ball. HES UNDERRATED!!
and Stevie.. same, always get injured, 2009/2010 hes been awfull, he’s 29 lets sell him before he lose price.. around 20-30Millin euro is enough.
Now we got plenty of pennies, we can buy Jovanovich partner up with N’gog/Kuyt, now, we still got around 80 to 90million euros, we can buy Christiano Ronaldo for Winger (get rid of Maxi first) for 90millions euros. A new world record transfer fees. Dont sell Babel and Lucas, there are our Future. If we still have a lot of money, sack RAFA and get Alex McLeich for our new manager.
Sound Good isn’t?

Sound Good isn’t?
surely been smoking crack

What i don’t understand about all of this is the following:
Our first choice starting 11 is probably the best in the league, on many occassions this has been proven!……. Yet, some dickheads on here think cashing in on players like Steven Gerrard(best all-round midfielder in the world) and Fernando Torres(Best Complete Striker in the world) is the way forward? *confused*
Rafa Benitez is one of the best managers in the world, track record speaks for itself!…. Yet, we should get rid of him and get Guus Hiddink(who only stopped the rot at chelsea, did not make them better) or Alex Mcleish(who last year was still in the Championship)? *Again Confused*
Yet, nobody is fighting the cause of the real problem at Anfield….. The Owners!
We are Liverpool and we have always had to wheel and deal in the transfer market… We have never been able to buy a bunch of world class players per year except maybe in the 80’s but we always seem to come up with a genius signing every couple of years.
I couldn’t give a rats ass if we have owners who can spend a shedload of money in the transfer market, what does bother me however, is i don’t like owners or anyone for that matter promise me the world and in the end getting nothing…..These Yankeedoodles promised us
- A new stadium (looks good on paper and in 3D image but it still aint there, and aint looking to be built anytime this century)
- Funds for Transfers (We always have to sell before we can buy, so basically this is a lie too)
- no debt on the club(hmmmmmmmm, like they say in texas….. BULLLLLLLLLLSHIT)
You can replace managers with other managers and you can keep doing that for the next decade, it still won’t change the fact that it won’t get better than what Rafa has to offer….
In the words of Jose Mourinho: “to make an omelette you need eggs, no eggs, no omelette… Some eggs are more expensive than other eggs… but, a good omelette requires good eggs!!!!!”

I disagree mickey. I think you have to look at the question of managers in this way?
Who can get the best out of what they have to work with? For most of this season, Rafa has been shithouse.
His Track record may look ok, but, add to his record the fact that he chocked last season. He lost his bottle, when we were 5 points clear and 2 games in hand. He chocked. We got draws against crap teams, largely due to rafas ” go out and dont lose ” mentallity, rather than a go out and win mentallity.
I can’t see him winning us the league, in fact, the next 4 years I feel could be very painful to watch with rafa in command.
He is a destroyer of good young talent, he gives No encouragement, shows no passion, except for his own cause, and is too stubborn. Yes I want him to suceed as that would be good for livers, but, I cant see it happening.

Totally agree Trav, the first couple of years i think Rafa done well and last year i don’t know if it was the players or Rafa that choked, but it is clear this season that something is not right.
I think we have 4 World class players in Reina, Carra, Gerrard and Torres with 3 or 4 potentially class youngsters, but Rafa buy’s them and then DOESN’T play them, give them a chance, Darby is not worse then Degen, Pacheco is no worse than Riera/Beni/Kuyt. Dalle Valle looks a class apart in the reserves so for god sake play them.

trav09, you are right about some who just turn up here to abuse Donavan Reid, Retryboy (haven’t notice that much bullets directed at you though). There are also others I feel who are just too tired to keep arguing with Retryboy especially. Hence, they just lash out.
I for one do read most of Retryboy’s post. He has some valid points. There are also many times he just talks shit. I am probably one of those who are too damn lazy to quote examples here. Hey, i have no axe to grind against him. As you alluded to everybody can have their opinions about Rafa. I for one is not a big Rafa backer but frankly, I will cheer him on and i don’t think I hate Rafa as much as Retryboy does.
On a separate note, to the guy who says Torres is OVERRATED. Well, there are hints from the official site that he has been struggling with a groin injury. Not sure if you had one before I do. It really stops you from going in full gear. It affects your kicking especially shooting. If Torres has been suffering from some form of groin strain/tear, then it will dampen his movements. We have seen in previous seasons what Torres can do and clearly so far for this season, he is not up for it. Looks like he clearly need some serious rest.
