Manchester United have expressed an interest in the Fulham defender Chris Smalling, whose remarkable rise from non-League football now looks likely to continue with a battle for his signature between two of the biggest clubs in English football.
It has been widely anticipated that Arsenal would make the first move for the £7m-rated defender, who was playing for Maidstone United when he was signed by Roy Hodgson in March 2008. However, Manchester United have let it be known that they are interested in the 20-year-old who, in a short space of time, has broken into the Fulham side and the England Under-21s.
Among the scouting circles of the Premier League’s biggest clubs, United’s interest in Smalling is widely known and is likely to push up the price for a player who is difficult to value because of the unorthodox way in which he came into the professional game. (Independent)
As speculation mounts that Manchester United centre back Nemanja Vidic isn’t totally happy at Old Trafford, speculation that has been denied by the player himself on many occasions, Sir Alex has been repeatedly linked with supposed long term replacements and today we appear to have a new one.
The rise to prominence of the Fulham youngster has been swift and it appears Roy Hodgson has unearthed a very talented prospect for the future but will his future be at Craven Cottage? I guess at least rumours of a potential departure of Chris Smalling takes the heat off last season’s most frequent supposed exit bound defender Brede Hangeland.
With Rio Ferdinand also suffering loss of form and injury issues it could be a good move for Manchester United to bring in some promising cover to cope with the type of injury crisis the club faced earlier in this season whilst also making plans for the future. The England Under 21 international has already shown that he can cope when thrown into the Premier League deep end but a move for the former Maidstone man may more likely when he has a little more top tier experience in the bank.
