Romania international striker Adrian Mutu has tested positive for a banned substance, according to the Italian Olympic Committee.
A statement said traces of anti-obesity drug sibutramine were found in a sample after a Serie A match between his Fiorentina side and Bari on 10 January.
The 31-year-old tested positive for cocaine in 2004 while at Chelsea.
Mutu was banned for seven months by the Football Association, but he could face a four-year ban for a second offence.
Sibutramine is an appetite suppressant drug used for obese people, although it was recently banned in the UK amid fears over the increased risks of heart attacks and strokes.
Mutu has been in excellent form for the Florence-based club, scoring seven times this season – including a goal in the 2-1 win over Bari.
But away from the pitch a Swiss Federal Court is nearing a ruling on his appeal against the Court of Arbitration for Sport, which said he must pay Chelsea 17m Euros (£14.62m) for breach of contract. (BBC Sport)
Now unless Adrian Mutu is a walking optical illusion it seems clear that the Fiorentina is not obese and therefore has no business taking a banned anti-obesity drug and has therefore apparently flouted anti-doping laws and will surely find it very hard to prove his innocence, even harder to do so given his previous record on this issue.
No doubt the Romanian International will attempt to suggest that he didn’t knowingly take the said substance and to be fair I am always almost accidentally ingesting illegal obesity drugs, I mean it’s just so easy to do so in this day and age (sarcasm). Given that the player’s teammates went all out in recent months to try to raise money so as to pay off the striker’s huge debt to Chelsea he must be feeling very small, not due to the medication he has taken, about his behaviour.
It should be interesting to see how the Italians deal with this. By rights if Mutu can be proven to have deliberately committed the act then that should be his footballing career over and no doubt he will then be faced with another breach of contract legal bill, only this time he may have to find the cash himself to pay off his debts.
