Football - Liverpool v Sunderland Barclays Premier League

Liverpool winger Ryan Babel is reportedly close to an Anfield exit, with Sunderland ready to renew their interest.

The news comes just days after Steve Bruce accused Rafael Benitez of turning the head of Kenwyne Jones, but the Daily Mail reports that the Liverpool star is back on the top of their wish list.

Dutchman Babel has struggled to make a major impact on Merseyside since moving in 2007, used sparingly by Benitez despite the Reds’ lack of attacking options.

Linked with a move to Birmingham City earlier in the month, Babel has stood firm over a possible move. Rumoured to be holding out for a possible swap deal that would take him to either Arsenal or Spurs, a switch to London now appears unlikely and Sunderland a more likely destination.

A product of the famed Ajax academy, Babel made his debut for the Dutch giants in 2004. An international debut followed in 2005, and he now has 37 caps to his name.

The 23-year-old moved to Anfield for a fee of around £11.5 million, but has failed to live up to that price tag. The Reds have reportedly been trying to cash in, but are yet to take advantage of the interest in their versatile attack-minded player.

The possibility of a swap deal for Kenwyne Jones can’t be ruled out, although both sides would deny that possibility after the weeks earlier actions. Bruce holds the ace however, and could push for a January deal as the window moves towards a close. (Give Me Football – Official PFA Website)

Liverpool have moved swiftly to deny reports that Yossi Benayoun is on the verge of joining Dynamo Moscow.

Dynamo claimed on Wednesday that the Reds midfielder had agreed terms and was poised to join the Russian outfit before the close of the January transfer window.

The suggestion came from the club’s sporting director Konstantin Sarsania, who also insisted the Israel captain’s move was at an advanced stage on a deal worth around £7million.

“It is true that we have come to an agreement with the player’s agent,” said Sarsania, who has seen Dynamo already raid Anfield in the transfer window to bring out-of-favour striker Andriy Voronin to Russia.

“In the next two days, Liverpool will make their own decision.”

But the Reds have wasted little time in giving their response to the Dynamo director’s comments and have made it crystal clear the 29-year-old is going nowhere.

“The player is not for sale, it’s as simple as that,” said a club spokesman on Liverpool’s offical website. (Sky Sports)

This seems to be a win win thing. These two stories both work in our favour and if they have any basis in truth it appears that one player we don’t need is about to leave Anfield and another who we desperately need to stay is apparently going nowhere.

Steve Bruce is apparently deeply angered by our moves for Kenwyne Jones but still wants Ryan Babel, so he can’t be that annoyed! In my view if Sunderland offer anywhere near £10m for the Dutchman then Rafa must surely take the money and run and should not entertain the notion of a swap deal with Jones and should instead look to get some cash in so that he re-invest in new talent and preferably will therefore hope to sell Babel in time to be able to spend before the transfer deadline.

Some further good news comes in the form of a swift denial from Liverpool regarding moves for Yossi Benayoun. Its good to see the club come out so emphatically and hopefully the manner in which they have acted will serve to show the Israeli just how important he is to the club.

I didn’t think the former West Ham man would be looking to leave the club and hopefully the statement from the club will end the speculation about a potential exit. All Anfield fans know just how crucial the adaptable attacker can be to the club and he is just the type of player we need to help push us towards the top four and should be kept on board at all costs.
