Tottenham look to have won the race to land Iceland international striker Eidur Gudjohnsen.
The former Chelsea and Barcelona star had looked set to sign for West Ham, until Spurs made a late move for the 31-year-old.
The Hammers have hit out at the late move from their London rivals for the forward, who is set to depart French club Monaco.
But Spurs chief Harry Redknapp insists that the player made a straight choice between the two Premier League clubs.
“We’ve been talking about him for nearly two weeks and when we heard West Ham were interested we made our move,” Redknapp told The Sun.
“We are not paying a penny more than West Ham were offering him.
“Two identical deals were on the table. In the end it was a straight choice for Eidur.” (Sky Sports)
West Ham are reportedly not very happy about the circumstances which have seen an Upton Park target end up signing up at White Hart Lane but it doesn’t seem that the east London side can have a lot to complain about. Clearly the Icelandic international wasn’t fully sure of moving to the east London side and therefore Harry Redknapp was able, so it appears, to wrestle into the equation and clinch the signing of a very adaptable attacker.
The Monaco man has found himself less and less part of Pepe Guardiola’s plans and the former Chelsea man had a good run at the Nou Camp before moving to Monaco and seems keen on a new challenge and at White Hart Lane he should offer Tottenham a new option going forward.
The 31 year old can play across the midfield and out wide and also works well as the second striker or in the whole behind the front man. The loan deal could well lead to a permanent deal depending on how well he does at the north London club and all in all this deal seems like a very good one and one that can help Tottenham push towards a top four spot.
