File under ‘are you sure about that..?’ Hacks at The Sun have suggested that the City winger is on the Catalan giant’s radar but there is apparantly a contract issue with City…
It transpires that Ian Wright is a regular columnist for the news international multi million seller and has stated his dissatisfaction at SWP’s contract situation with The Blues.
Wright alledged:
‘Ever since Cook and Marwood came to the club they seem to be only interested in looking after players who are not really Man City people. Shaun is City through and through, but he has to feel appreciated.’
A clear dig at City CEO Garry Cook and City Football Administrator Brian Marwood. Cook is walking a fine line with a section of City fans as it stands and would do well to not cold shoulder our treasured MCFC Academy graduates.
There is of course never any smoke without fire and the merest suggestion of an unsettled SWP is enough to concern any diehard Blue. Ever since he returned to Manchester City, the player has been the heartbeat of the squad on many occasions despite recent injury and erratic form.
The City legend still has a few years to run on his current contract and is reported to be attempting to extend it.
Barcelona by Monday? Definitely maybe, but our Premier League rivals will be put on alert should the situation drag on. (Vital Football)
£16m rated Shaun Wright Phillips has been in fine form at Eastlands this term and has been in fine form this season and you can see why the Catalan giants would be interested but would they really make a bid for the England international? Barcelona have a feast of attacking options at present with some stunning talents also coming through their academy. Also I don’t see Roberto Mancini accepting any offer for the England international, after all its not like Manchester City need the money from such a sale!
Middlesbrough’s Adam Johnson has asked for permission to speak to Manchester City, who have tabled a £5m bid for the winger. However, Boro boss Gordon Strachan insists the winger will not be leaving the Riverside. (Press Association)
Middlesbrough boss Gordon Strachan expects winger Adam Johnson to see out his contract on Teesside with the club having rejected a series off offers.
Press Association Sport understands big-spending Manchester City have tabled a bid of around £5million for the 22-year-old midfielder and that other suitors have made their interest known.
However, Strachan said: “We have had verbal offers in the last week for Adam, but nothing has changed.
“Adam is still here and I would expect him still to be here for the last 19 games of the season.”
Johnson’s future has been a topic for debate for months with the England Under-21 international’s contract at the Riverside Stadium due to expire at the end of the season.
Home-town club Sunderland are among his admirers, while Everton have also been linked with the player, who scored his 11th and 12th goals of the season in Tuesday night’s 4-1 Coca-Cola Championship victory at Doncaster.
Strachan has insisted since he arrived at the club that he does not want Johnson to leave and Boro, who refused to sell England international Stewart Downing to Tottenham 12 months ago, remain determined to hold on to their prized asset.
Strachan said: “We have had verbal offers, we have had one official offer and I would imagine after looking at those that Adam will be here for the rest of the season, which we are quite delighted about because he is coming back into form. (Independent)
It appears that Manchester City are in the driving seat to sign the talented young Englishman. Either they will get the winger in the summer and hope that the tribunal who decide on such matters on players under 24 who are out of contract or they will wave enough money in front of Middlesbrough, around £5m has been reported, in order to jump the queue. Hell they could even sign the nippy wide man before the transfer window closes and then loan him back to the Riverside outfit for the rest of the season.
