Arsene Wenger is surely more determined than ever to bring in some striking talent to the Emirates before the transfer window shuts.
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has revealed he has considered moves for David Villa and Marouane Chamakh.
Wenger insists he has money to spend to strengthen his squad, but that he has not been able to push through the right deal.
A new striker has been mentioned as Wenger’s top target during this month’s transfer window following the injury to Robin van Persie, but so far the Frenchman has yet to bring in a new forward.
Wenger has admitted he looked into the possibility of signing Bordeaux’s Marouane Chamakh and Valencia’s David Villa, but that neither club were willing to do business for the players.
“It is not only about wanting to buy, it is to find better players than what you have available and we haven’t until now. It is as simple as that,” Wenger told the club’s official website.
“You always want to add a [Cristiano] Ronaldo if you can, but is he available and where is he?
“Marouane Chamakh is not available because he is playing with Bordeaux and Bordeaux don’t want to release him. David Villa as well, Valencia don’t want to let him go.” (Sky Sports)
Given the way his side were handed a thrashing today it would appear that Arsene Wenger would be more keen than ever to spend some of the reported £30m he has in his war-chest. The Gunners boss was left having to start today’s Emirates encounter with Manchester United with no recognised striker on the pitch and as such it seems he desperately needs to bring someone in rather than depend on his attacking midfielder’s to weigh in with even more goals than they currently supply.
David Villa has been linked with a number of Premier League clubs with the likes of Chelsea and Liverpool being among the front runners for the Spanish international’s signature however it may be more likely that Arsenal could nab Marouane Chamakh. The Moroccan is available for free in the summer but such is the Arsenal’s urgency they may need to put in a bid before the transfer window to try to snatch the Bordeaux man.
Derby boss Nigel Clough has confirmed the Championship outfit are also interested in landing Arsenal’s 18-year-old French forward Gilles Sunu on loan.
“We are trying, we are making calls about loans to bolster the squad,” Clough told The Derby Telegraph.
“The loans are from Premier League clubs. One is a bit more experienced, a couple are young lads.
“Gilles Sunu, from Arsenal, has been mentioned. We are still talking about that and a couple of others as well.” (Sky Sports)
The French teenager has been impressing many in the reserves and looks set to complete a useful loan move to Derby. Gilles Sunu is already pushing for a place in the French Under 21 set-up such is his potential and a move to the Championship should help build the player up for next season.
