Manchester City are planning a last-ditch transfer deadline swoop for Real Madrid midfielder Fernando Gago.
New City boss Roberto Mancini has made Gago one of his top transfer targets since taking over at Eastlands.
City are believed to have had a bid rejected for Gago last week, but they are now ready to come back with an improved offer to try and persuade Real to sell the Argentine.
Gago’s agent, Marcello Lombilla, admits they are now waiting to see if Real will accept City’s new offer.
“Manchester City will present a formal offer on Monday and then the decision is up to Real Madrid and we are waiting for the answer,” Lombilla told the Daily Mirror.
Reports in Spain suggest Real are unwilling to sell Gago as they are competing to win La Ligaand the UEFA Champions League this season.
However, City are expected to tie up the signing of Parma’s McDonald Mariga before the transfer window slams shut at 5pm.

Sources at the Bernabeu had claimed that a bid from Manchester City had been turned down earlier this week but Roberto Mancini is apparently keen on getting his man and with that in mind is lining up a larger bid for Real Madrid’s surplus to requirements Argentine.
The 23 year old defensive midfielder appears to be just what Mancini is looking for to solidify his midfield and with Patrick Vieira seen as a short term solution perhaps Gago is the perfect long term talent to build a team around. There is no doubting the former Boca Junior is a top notch player and is apparently keen on the idea of a new challenge and therefore a move could well be on the cards.
