Expect to see no end of lame rubber boot-related puns when Arsène Wenger signs Brazilian “wonderkid” Wellington Silva for £3m. A good mate of Manchester United twins Rafael and Fabio Da Silva, the 18-year-old Fluminese striker first went on trial at Arsenal three years ago, when he scored four goals in 45 minutes against the mighty Norwich U-15s. This week, the Brazilian scored a brace and made another goal in a friendly with Dagenham & Redbridge, which was played behind closed doors and arranged by Arsenal to provide a platform for the youngster to show what he can do. According to The Sun, Wenger has also “stepped up the chase” for £14m-rated Nice striker Loic Remy, who has been dubbed “the new Thierry Henry”, probably because he’s a bit sullen, drives a Renault Clio and has a habit of going “missing” in really important games. Arsene Wenger is set to sign Brazilian wonderkid Wellington Silva after the teenager impressed on trial with Arsenal.
Wellington, 18, scored twice and set up another goal in a behind-closed-doors friendly with Dagenham & Redbridge this week.
He has been at the Gunners with the blessing of his Brazilian club Fluminense and Arsenal boss Wenger is hoping to broker a £3million deal to bring the striker to the Emirates Stadium. (Daily Mirror)
The young Brazilian has been performing fantastically well for the Emirates whilst on trial and appears to have done enough to secure a dream move. Arsene Wenger is looking to add yet more youthful talent to his Arsenal squad but one wonders where he fits them all. Ask most Gunners fans and they will probably tell you they would like to see a few established experienced stars brought into the club so as to avoid a continuous ‘transition’ period caused by too many youngsters needing time to bed in.
Meanwhile Wenger also looks to step up the chase for Loic Remy who is at least a tad more ready for the Premier League than some of the players linked with a move to the north London club. The price tag on the Nice striker is however still a little inflated and will probably need to drop considerably before Arsenal make a solid move in the summer.
Arsenal forward Andrey Arshavin has hit out at Premier League referees for failing to provide enough protection for players.
The 28-year-old playmaker – who has had to operate as a makeshift centre-forward in recent weeks following injuries to Robin van Persie, Nicklas Bendtner and Eduardo – has been playing in pain after sustaining a foot injury.
And the Russian international claims that the problem has not been able to heal fully due to the rough-and-tumble nature of the English game, and has called on officials to offer players more protection to prevent serious long-term injuries.
“The referees here do not whistle when someone just pushes you a little bit – it’s seen as nothing, you must play on,” the Gunner said in Mail.
“Of course that makes the game quicker, but for me it’s not always great.
“With my knock at the moment I’m trying my best and after each kick I am feeling pain, but I still train every day. I’ve had a few other injuries.
“Basically it is simple. If I can play, I will.” (Four Four Two)
This is an interesting point. Could the relatively large amount of injuries at the Emirates be down to the manhandling they are getting from opposition defenders? Well its true that the Premier League is rougher than most leagues on the continent but I would say that refereeing has actually become even less lenient to offenders in recent years so by that rationale things should have been far worse in the past. As for using Andrei as a makeshift forward well that will only really ever work if he plays alongside another frontman and Wenger really should have learned his lesson from the Manchester United match and will at least decide to opt for a less than 100% striker rather than having to field players our of position.
