Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez is confident of securing Serbia international striker Milan Jovanovic for next season.
The 28-year-old marksman is out of contract in the summer and early reports suggested The Reds had already secured him on a pre-contract.
However, Benitez has stated Liverpool are yet to agree terms with the Standard Liege ace, although he is hopeful a deal can be reached.
“Nothing is sorted yet, but I’m confident it will be,” confirmed Benitez.
Liverpool face stiff competition for his signature after Standard confirmed Juventus and AC Milan are also in the hunt for his signature.
“I wish Jovanovic all the best,” confirmed Standard’s vice-president Luciano D’Onorfio. “He always did his best for the club.
“AC Milan, Juventus and Liverpool want him. The choice is up to him. I play no role in his decision. (Sky Sports)
Clearly we would have loved to be bidding for a truly big name in the transfer market but this capture, and it looks all but sealed (touch wood) could well be a very intelligent one. Yes Milan Jovanovic has no top level club experience to speak of but he has shown what he can do for club and country and the fact we will be getting the Serbian goal machine for the price of a £10m three year contract sounds like pretty good financial sense to me. Anfield needs more striking options and the Standard Liege may well work out a decent cost efficient answer to the lack of firepower at Liverpool Football Club.
Juventus are being tipped to snap up Liverpool centre-back Martin Skrtel in the summer as rumours continue to circulate linking the Serie A giants with Reds boss Rafael Benitez.
The Turin outfit have struggled defensively this term and with star man Girogio Chiellini set for a big-money exit at the end of the season and veteran Fabio Cannavaro winding down his career, it appears the bianconeri hierarchy are keen to add fresh blood. It is believed that Skrtel could be lured from Liverpool for a fee in the region of £8 million with the Premier League side in desperate need of cash.
The Slovakian international has made 74 appearances since arriving on Merseyside from Zenit St Petersburg but has struggled to hold down a regular first team starting berth with Jamie Carragher and Daniel Agger the preferred first choice defensive pairing.
It is believed that much of Liverpool’s summer transfer policy will depend on their final positioning in this season’s Premier League table. Having finally regained a Champions League spot after a solid run of games the Anfield faithful will be hoping their side can maintain their form and guarantee the riches that come with qualifying for Europe’s premiere club competition. (Sport.co.uk)
I don’t for one second see Martin Skrtel looking to leave Anfield but could the owners seek to sell off a player or two to balance the books? Well that is not beyond the realm of possibility. Yossi Benayoun is another individual we can not afford to lose but I wouldn’t put it past Messrs Hicks and Gillett to see if they could make some money from player sales. The Yanks wouldn’t be crazy enough to cash in on the likes of El Nino and Stevie G but they could very easily look to get their grubby hands on some money from ‘lesser’ stars at the club.
Hopefully Rafa Benitez continues to have the last say on such matters but that may not always be the case.
Anyway, good news. We are in the top four! After a good run of results from matches we have given our all in we have overcome Tottenham to take that coveted spot and there is still a good chunk of the season left to stake our claim for third in my opinion, but lets not get complacent. Bring on Arsenal!

Damn right, I can see Jovanovic doing well. Hicks and Gillett wouldn’t think twice about selling their own grandmothers let alone Yossi and Skrtel

BPL_WILL_BE_PAINTED_RED.
not so easy though with the likes of ac milan competing though
i am quite sure he would join us or juventus for at both the places he
would get first team play easily (TALKING ABOUT MILAN).
Though with him in i don’t see LFC buying any left winger .i am 200 %
sure RAFA would use him as a left winger in absence or presence of riera.
so with MAXI around the tally of wingers would rise to 3 .
so most probably we won’t SEE us buying a decent WINGER or STRIKER(
FORGET VILLA AND AGUERO )
what he may buy is a left winger and that would be it.
unless he sells BABEL in that case may be he would bring in a new STARLET.
BUT AND PROVEN ATTACKING PLAYER JONING US I DON’T SEE IT FOR
THERE ARE ALREADY MORE THAN ENOUGH PLAYER IN THE SQUAD WHO
ARE WAITING FOR FIRST TEAM CHANCE.

If people actually listen to Christian Purslow, the owners cant touch the money made from sales as it goes into a designated players account which is used as transfer money.
A certain amount of research would have shown this.
anonymous - February 8th, 2010 at 12:52 pm
Yeah great article,, Totally agree that Skrtel would not be a want away.. In fact I think he’s been preferred to Agger even when both fit this season and was starting to form a partnership with Carragher before injury. Could be sold to balance the books but I seriously doubt it. Rafa spent 6m+ on him and he’s proven his worth and looks happy.
Bring on Arsenal – Massive game!!

anonymous – February 8th, 2010 at 12:50 pm: Took the words out of my mouth. I trust the yanks less than I do snakes but I do trust Purslow, and if he says they can’t touch the cash, then they can’t.
Skrtel has been a favorite of mine for a long time. I love his attitude and complete no nonsense style. It would be very sad to see him leave after this season as it would colour his LFC career to be less than it could be.
Having said that, the fact that I like him does skew my view. He is pretty horrible on the ball, easily the worst at LFC (Reina included), and perhaps selling him would be a good idea. 8 mil would be yet another profit from Rafa’s dealings and could possibly buy us another more solid defender. Or maybe we could use a youngster and use the money for another attacking player.

THE CHOSEN ONE
i dont think we will be selling him , id be very surprised if im honest. We really do need defensive cover and a good replacement would cost us 10 mil or even more if hes english. then the person would have to get use to our way of play. Dont forget we have youth players coming through. i think who we have now well keep until the youth player displaces one of them and then they would be sold.
Rafa would only sell if he found a real bargain his priority has to be a left back when it comes to defence. Skirtel will improve.

it’s been further muted yesterday that Torres will end up at city I don’t think the banks will let the type of money to be offered to LFC pass. I would reckon this signing is not top of rafa wish list again it’s a cheap signing over the course of his contract.
As you and I know there is no money in the pot for big signings
anonymous - February 8th, 2010 at 2:02 pm
Dont think lfc will sell srkrtel or yossi !!
With the club in the financial state it is, the yanks are looking to sell a stake in lfc and to be honest if anyone is going to invest they would probably want a controlling stake or overall control. Which would be the ideal !!!!
Jovanvic would be a good signing for the reds (Different attacking options)
We need to get rid of the squad players and concentrate on developing the youth players and invest in a new LB, LW, RW, ST for the starting XI and a few impact players.
Money permitting OR usual case
LB – Gareth Bale or keep Insua
RW – James Milner or Kuyt/ Maxi
LW – Juan Mata or play jovanvic there.
ST – David Villa or Kenwyne Jones
Other players: Micah Richards, Ryan Shawcross, Michael Johnson etc good young english players.
Sell; Degen, Babel, Reira, Ngog, El Zhar, Aurelio etc.
YANKS OUT SO OUR CLUB CAN BE SAVED AND PROGRESS WITH A NEW STADIUM AND CAPABLE TITLE WINNING SQUAD !! LETS STOP SETTLING FOR 2ND BEST !!!!!!
Coggin - February 8th, 2010 at 2:12 pm
If Skrtel goes he goes and another profit is made, saying that I think 8 mill is a bit on the cheap side and also I like the guy. Having watched the game on Saturday I like everyone else must of seen the fight and passion is back and looking at the teams around us then I say 3rd place is where we should be aiming now, Torres still out and Arsenal not quite firing on all cylinders. The Arsenal game on Wednesday and the Man city game on the 21st are going to vital to us and we need 4+ points from these games.
Bring it on!!!

You forget that the players have the defining say in whether they leave or not. If the club tries to sell Torres and he does not want to go to the club trying to buy him, then all he has to do is not sign a contract.
Torres has said again and again and again about how much he loves it at LFC. He said that the only club he would ever leave Atletico for was Liverpool and has said that he wants to be great at LFC and end his career at Atletico if possible. The yanks can’t make Torres leave, all they can do is wait for his contract to expire in which case nobody wins.
As anonymous – February 8th, 2010 at 2:25 pm said, its just not going to happen.

anonymous - February 8th, 2010 at 3:28 pm
Well, with the emergence of Sotos and also a couple of younger defenders coming through why not sell Skrtel for £8million? that represents a decent profit. I actually like the guy and i think if he was to stay then him and agger would be the first choice pairing for the next decade unless someone amazing comesa long.
Im not his biggest fan but i can now see what Lucas brings to the table.. his no nonsense attitude and running around makes him very important. Okay so he cant pass the ball which is strange for a Brazilian, but he does break the play up well and does offer good protection to the back 4.
OKay so we have masch to do that job, but Masch is a livewire who is quite indisciplined at times so i think Rafa needs both of them in there.
What this should do is free up the wingers a bit more and i really do think we are one left winger away from being world class.
I also like the look of Ngog, he does the hard stuff easily but then struggles to do the easy stuff, but that comes with experience.. the chance he had in the first half, all i will say is if thats nando or gerrard, its 1-0 to liverpool.
Id sell Benayoun for the quoted £7million and Babel for the quoted £9million and then bring in a £15million left winger (david silva anyone?).
anonymous - February 8th, 2010 at 3:57 pm
keep benayoun and skrtel. i think it would be better to sell/bench carrager cos he is getting slow and old and ply skrtel instead. and please rafa try dani up front with kuyt.

Aquaman:
In a desperate situation, desperate people behave desperately. If H&G ever face a prospect of losing control of the club, while still awaiting an offer, that will give them a profit on the sale of LFC, and there is money in “a sacred transfer fund”, they will grab it. There is nothing in law that would prevent it. Purslow threat of resignation would not stop it. This is reality in a cut throat business of leveraged buyouts, when the principals have a history of broken promises, “flip-flops” and desparate behaviour.
Skrtel future, I like the guy as much as you do, will he ever be able to take the ball up the field or execute long passes like Agger, will he learn not to lose the sight of “threats” in his assigned zone, God only knows. With Sotirios being a better header of the ball, equaly tough (ask Fellaini) I would say Rafa will make the final decision based on the readiness of youngsters coming up and other targets available (not just CBs).

I support SL at home but I also support Liverpool. I hope MJ will somehow make it with LFC, but I truly believe that he is not worthy of wearing the red shirt of Liverpool. There is a big divide in quality between the Belgian and English leagues. MJ is not the footballer many Liverpool fans are making him out to be.
Aquaman - February 8th, 2010 at 4:29 pm
I’m in kermit.
dr.Barnard: You’re quite right about H&G, but as I said in my post you can’t make someone leave. The only threat that you can use on a player to make them leave is that they won’t get to play. But if you’re looking for money then not playing a player will drop his value etc etc. If Torres doesn’t want to leave then he’s not going anywhere.
dr.Barnard - February 8th, 2010 at 4:45 pm
Aquaman:
I wasn’t talking about Nando, I disagreed with an anonymous comment : “the owners cant touch the money made from sales as it goes into a designated players account which is used as transfer money.” which you seemed to agree with.
By the way, couple of months ago, Benitez implied, he would resign if Torres was sold, he meant it. Now this statement is double edged sword if you think about it, it could be used to nudge Rafa out and get H&G 70M+ chunk of money. Unlikely scenario, but entertained already by some. Gabriel Marcotti, one the smarter football commentators in Europe, suggest that Rafa will leave, on his own terms, if the black comedy duo haven’t vacated the stage by July.
Aldo - February 8th, 2010 at 6:18 pm
dr.Barnard/Aquaman
I also heard on the radio about Torres Alan Bazil (TALKSPORT) said this morning that Torres will end up at city this summer and he had this on good authority. i like you hope not but you know because you cant trust H&G
As time goes on and someone doesnt buy the club and someones doesnt invest and If city offer 100-25 million plus for Torres what will H&G do or even the bank ? surely the will use this money to draw down the debt ?
I feel this is going to get tasty behind the scenes and we aint going to like it.
Aquaman - February 8th, 2010 at 6:45 pm
Well I had it on pretty good authority during the summer that we were signing Villa, Silva, etc etc etc. None of those worked out, so unless sources are named I won;t believe it.
And again, if Nando does not want to leave then he is going nowhere! No one can force him out as he has a signed contract that keeps him at the club until 2014 unless BOTH parties (ie LFC and Nando) agree to allow his contract to be bought out.

THE CHOSEN ONE
KERMIT our whole midfield had a very good game mate considering everton packed the midfield with 5 players. Lucas best position in just in front of the back four I keep saying this . Makes us more attacking minded ideally for home games unless gerrard plays in midfield behind the front two and then id play Mascherano. to balance the team more.
One other thing did anyone see the game against spurs when Mascherano ran down the left on a counter and gave gerrard a 25 yard pass with jis left foot?
What a pass!!! if Ngog would of messed up with it like gerrard did everyone would of given him grief.
My point is -Mascherano can pass and even our best players mess up at times
Its no coincidence that gerrard getting back to his best and we are now doing well.
Against arsenal will be really tough as they always seem to beat us. If we get a draw then we`ve done well. Rafa will play for the draw. Anything more would be fantastic. I think well have a better chance against city myself. But we cant afford to lose that one unless we beat arsenal.
Four points from the next two games would be good for the team because im shore city will start sliding down the table as long as we dont lose against them.
prediction being brave we draw with the gooners and beat city.

it feels great to be in the top 4 again but that doesn’t mean we should let of steam we got to keep winning them games until we are atleast/hopefully 10+ points ahead and even then we should till aim to win the games.

skrtel the turtle is not really needed so 8 mill would be worth it. and he aint exactly been awesome for us lately. now we have soto i could see skrtel heading off somewhere. although benayoun has been decent for us this season we look quite well equipped on the wings at the moment so selling him for 7 or 8 mill wouldnt be bad business. i know the russian window is open for another month or two so i wouldnt be that surprised if he went.
anonymous - February 8th, 2010 at 7:53 pm

i thought jovanovic must have had injury problems he’s 28 and not even played 200 senior games, i hope he’s gonna come good but i smell a voronin!
as for selling yossi and skrtl, i’d let yossi go but for double the price thats been banded about and i wouldn’t let skrtl leave as i would expect next season him and agger to be our main 2 cb’s and carra to start to sit out more games
and i can’t see torres leaving for a team who we’re gonna finish above in the league. i just hope we getsome investment so we we can get 3 world class players to really bring us to the next level i’d like to see us bring in mata, milner and a striker and if we’ve any spare bale and richards
anonymous - February 8th, 2010 at 8:09 pm
Reports earlier in the week had suggested that the Serbian playmaker was close to committing his future to the Reds and was expected to form part of Rafa Benitez’s squad in 2010/11.
However, it has now emerged that such a deal has not been put in place, with the Standard Liege forward yet to decide where his next move will take him.
Jovanovic has plenty of avenues to explore, with numerous clubs monitoring his situation.
Liverpool had hoped to beat the rush for his signature by reaching an agreement in January, but could be about to see those efforts come to nothing.
“There are many possibilities,” Jovanovic’s agent Zoran Stojadinovic told Superdeporte.
“The situation will be resolved soon, but he has not signed for any club as yet.”
It is believed that Spanish giants Valencia have edged ahead in the race to land Jovanovic, with Stojadinovic admitting that discussions with the Primera Liga outfit are ‘very advanced’.
However, there are plenty of other sides still in the frame and nothing has been ruled out as yet.

The report that I heard said that Jovanovic is waiting for confirmation that Rafa will be manager next year which is fair enough. No one would want to be signed by one manager who likes you and then never played by his replacement who doesn’t.
Unlike the Voronin move, there’s been a lot of hype about this move which makes me think that he’s actually quite good. Still, as always, I will only judge once I’ve seen him in action. Hope he isn’t as injury prone as those figures make me fear.

I think Milan Jovanovic won’t be another Voronin cause he at least has explosive pace to beat a defender of a few steps. I don’t expect to see truckloads of goals from him but i believe he will get plenty of assists to the likes of Torres, Kuyt and Gerrard hitting the by-line and passing across the 6 yard box and/or pulling back to Steve G on the edge of the 18 yard box….
Retryboy - February 9th, 2010 at 4:59 am
We definitely should lose one of Kyrgiakos and skrtel for next year. We have some top young centre backs in san jose, kelly and ayala we need to only have 3 quality experienced players ahead of them to allow them to come through properly. Carragher and agger are far and away the best 2. Skrtel is about 6 years younger than Kyrgiakos who pretty much lived up to his ‘looks ok then costs you big time’ tag…again! Not convinced by either of them but the stories are all the papers looking at who rafa might take with him if he goes its purest speculation with no basis other than juventus need a defender and skrtel isn’t high up the pecking order at the moment. Transfer windows only passed about a week ago and already rumours about the next
1_RED_AUSSIE - February 9th, 2010 at 5:46 am
Retry – What are your thoughts on young eccleston and amoo???? Haven’t heard you throwing these names around as readily when you have talked about youngsters in your previous posts???
Retryboy - February 9th, 2010 at 6:17 am
Reds aussie have talked about them many times but they along with the likes men Mavinga and Gulacsi are in the next crop as far as i am concerned won’t start being options till next year. Amoo particularly excited about will be great having someone that can take on players at pace. The ones i am on about have been performing well for a couple of years at least some of them are early 20’s now

I still dont know why we sold Lius Garcia and Craig Bellamy? So Another Striker and Attacking Midfielder will do just right.
I read a piece on the liverpool website by Paul Tomkins about the Everton game and Liverpool season so far.I couldnt of put it better.
ill just quote a piece “In little over a month, an eight-point deficit for fourth place has become a one-point comfort zone. And while Manchester City have games in hand, their defeat at Hull puts a different complexion on their challenge.
“Long-term, you have to worry about what their spending policy will mean to rivals, but even with a squad that costs over £100m more than the Reds’, they still haven’t really taken advantage of the absence of Torres and others”
So my point is was a top four finish ever in doubt?
Retryboy - February 9th, 2010 at 8:03 am

Hi Donovan,
Thanks again for bringing these to our attention.
We have already banned 8 commenters and there IP addresses have been logged and they can not comment any more. The guy who posted the comment you brought to our attention has also been banned.
In terms of making the site a members only site, this is a little more tricky as to do so would exclude a great many people who only want to post anonymously (and a great percentage who do so do not send in abusive comments).
Once again it is the actions of a few that are ruining it for others. Therefore we can only ban those people as and when they get through the net. We have a moderation list that we keep adding banned words to.
We are considering running a forum section that will be members only and perhaps that would go some way to balancing things out, giving people a chance to comment anonymously whilst on a members only forum things can be more easily run and looked after.
What do you think?

I think that the forum section would be a great Idea that way we could leave the childish crap posting “Anons” to there own little playing ground
anonymous - February 9th, 2010 at 1:20 pm
I choose not to have a profile and that’s my choice. Good idea, look what happened to Retryboy, I can’t be asked to get that abuse, from a bunch of strangers. This is one of the few websites that give out that oppurtunity.
anonymous - February 9th, 2010 at 1:22 pm
The oppurtunity to post as an anon that is not get abuse, lots of websites give out that oppurtunity.
anonymous - February 9th, 2010 at 1:24 pm
Wait Donavan Ried truth hurt is somehow offensive whats the banned word, what if Everton fans want to praise their American loaner or an Irish person wants to praise their Irish player.

wesold garcia because he asked to return home. rafa wanted to keep him but he stated family reasons. so we cant say no. As for bellemy he was sold to help fund the torress deal if im not mistaken.
RETRYBOY
I think rafa will keep all the defenders unless a very good bid comes in for skirtel. Well be fighting for alot of cups next season hopefully and experience counts.Imagine what would happen if jamie gets injured and we have to play 4 competitive matches with bookings and red cards etc.
Each of the defenders have their merits and at times they can be rotated as well as play alongside the youths in less serious matches to help develope them. Kyrgiakos very good in the air and has filled that void left by hypia. jammie cover for right back if need. Agger does get injured now and again etc.
Hopefully the youths will play in the cup matches and as subs for other easy home ties if they are ready. If we can learn to finish of games in the 1st leg in europe then the youths can also step in to.

Thanks for clearing that up for me.
But just imagine we kept them.
Anyway i still think a Striker an acomplished one and a good attacking Midfielder like Davies would suite us just right dont you think? If we had better depth in the team and less injuries i am sure we would be challenging for the title again this season.
nicklovesliverpool - February 9th, 2010 at 2:27 pm
Retryboy i fully agree just because we have won a few games does not mean we will now finish 4th. we have a lot of Tough games coming up City only few points behind with games in hand. Spurs point behind. Villa 3 points. we cant guarantee a 4th place. can only hope we beat the Gunners. Does anyone agree with me in saying that maxi is looking quiet out there not sure he can adapt to the Premier League.

I am no longer responding to anonymous post…. be I can not understand what this one is on about
anonymous – February 9th, 2010 at 1:24 pm
I am not on about the abuse you get from people not agreeing with the post you have written, but people whose only purpose is to come to this site and not post about football and Insult and abuse other for the views, and the colour…..
I am by the way black and proud too be so, but I had two grandmothers who were Jamaica,(RIP) and grandfather on my mothers side who was Germany(RIP) and grandfather on my fathers side who was Dutch,(RIP) and a great grandmother on my fathers side who was Irish(RIP)….. I have no problems with anyone for being a different colour or sexual orientation to me….
If you have then keep it to yourself……
This is a Caughtoffside the Liverpool section…. Most for you here are so proud of telling everyone else that you are true supporters because you come from Liverpool and yet you like to play the victim saying that the press, and the footballing world treat you like this and treat you like that; yet if you read the things you call one another is it any wonder that you are not respected by others?….When you don’t even respect one another?….
Liverpool supporters are still acknowledged as one of most knowledgeable supports in the world. Yet how do many of you response with the views of other you disagree with? By hurling insults and abuse at others….Argue your point/points, but remember you are not always going to win the argument, but you can win the respect of other by doing it in a respectful and non-abusive way
Yes I realize when I post this that some will response to this with some abusive comments, but I guess those few will prove my point for me, that there are some people out there that have no respect for anyone. The type of people that will disrespect everyone and the moment you stick up for yourself they say you are disrespecting them
I was listening on the radio L.B.C. 97.3 and one of the presenter was say that he was in Liverpool recently and the school kids were messing about at the bus stop, but as soon as the bus arrived he said they got on and their whole attitude changed……… They were quite, respectful to the elderly, even giving up their seat. He said it was so nice to see as you never see this in London anymore
These are the things that make Liverpool: The City great. That and the fact that Everton and Liverpool supporters would sit side by side….
So come on show the other teams and one another why we are the greats supporters in the world, whether from Liverpool or else where and if you can remember that then you will truly YNWA

RyanO - February 9th, 2010 at 4:39 pm
Good post Donavan, but I wouldn’t lose sleep over it. There are always going to be a faction of Liverpudlians that don’t get on with OOTers. They just don’t believe that someone from outside their city can love the team the way they do and they feel threatened by it. I can understand their position, wanting to be protectors of the traditions and history. I cannot understand why some take such a hateful stance on the subject. Keep in mind though, that it’s only a faction and that there are just as many or more who believe that if you wear the crest, you are a fellow Red, regardless of your origins. If you know that you love the club, that’s all you need to know.
Donavan Ried - February 9th, 2010 at 4:42 pm
Cheers RyanO….
dr.Barnard - February 9th, 2010 at 4:50 pm
Something to think about, which teams are the most popular on Internet world wide. Source NY Times:
“Which teams are the most popular on the Internet? According to the Web site futebolfinance.com the top five are Manchester United (452.7 million unique visitors annually), Real Madrid (271.6 million), Arsenal (205.6 million), Bayern Munich (27.8 million) and Liverpool (23.7 million). Corinthians of Brazil (6.1 million) was the only non-European team among the top 20.”
The conclusion, we have a lot of work to do, before the marketing will bring us to the status of the top club in world wide competition. A good start of course would be to bring new owners, with sufficient capital on hands, to improve the product on the field.
nicklovesliverpool - February 9th, 2010 at 4:51 pm
i have supported Liverpool for 18 years. Since i was born yet i live in Hertfordshire about 30 miles from London one of the home counties. The reason i support Liverpool was because of my Parents and my influence for a while that changed. but then i looked at the club and said why should i like Tottenham when all my family support a great team like Liverpool if your wondering Tottenham are the Local team round here so i was pressurized being the only Liverpool fan. I have been to 7 games all at Anfield including Mersyside derby Chelsea Man united Man city charlton 2 Spurs games. and every time i saw us win. I can tell you know there is no greater feeling than sitting in the Kop singing you’ll never walk alone when you have beaten chelsea 2-0 and the Great drive home. IF i were given the choice of A restraunt in London or a Pub in Liverpool i would take the pub everyday and sure Liverpool is not the most Glamorous city ever but it is the best City to me. YNWA
RyanO - February 9th, 2010 at 5:01 pm
dr. Barnard, I’ve been saying for the past few years that there is absolutely no reason, with our tradition and history, why LFC cannot be the biggest football brand in the world. Purslow, whether you think he is a plant by the bank or a legitimate hire, has made strides to get this done and long may it continue. He’s just signed the largest kit sponsorship deal in league history and that is just the start. When the new ground is built, have faith, the naming rights will bring in another hundred million along with the thousands of additional seats. I know naming rights are a point of contention, but this is a new age and if someone is paying to hang a sign on the ground, so be it. It doesn’t cheapen anything for me as it will be a new ground and not the same as renaming Anfield would be. Also, television money is getting bigger and bigger and Liverpool are a massive draw both at home and overseas and in Asia so there are bigger paydays in the future in that area as well. Our bad early form has not shaken my sense of optimism. The future is bright for our club!
dr.Barnard - February 9th, 2010 at 7:14 pm
nicklovesliverpool: great story, keep up the spirit, looking forward to meeting with you at a pub one day;
RyanO: That’s the spirit to look up to. Both of you check the enthusiastic reception of the news about Indian billionaires considering purchasing LFC. Show you the disgust with H&G and great support and hopes for the future. Mind you, I don’t expect we will stay undefeated for the rest of the season, so we have to be able to withstand some setbacks when they come…..

i support Liverpool because when i was younger Liverpool was the first city i visited when i was little. excluding the city of Bath inwhich i live in.
also by chance Liverpool as the first team i watched play on the t.v.
also on the racial comments – i am White but i have many Black friends and you racists are the scum of the earth as in my personal opinion it doesn’t matter what you look like, what skin you have,Race or if you have any disability as we are all Human and i can guran-dam-tee that many people will agree with me on this saying which people will know. it is : its not the outside that counts its the inside
aka personality.
the racists should look at that saying and think to themselves if they had been bullied because of skin colour or Race etc. i know you wouldn’t like it.
Donavan judging by what i have seen over the last 7 months you are without a shadow of a doubt a decent person and its been great to have spoken to you!!
this also applies to Retryboy,The chosen one,Nicklovesliverpool,Aquaman infact lets just say everyone on this site who isn’t a racist.
Welcome back Nicklovesliverpool.
sorry people for not talking about football but i thought that i had to say that
Aquaman - February 9th, 2010 at 10:25 pm
Hehe. My turn to add my (not so) touching story.
As a South African I grew up with our local “soccer” being condemned to “a black thing” which I mean with no offense intended. Understand that I was born in Apartheid and the country is still recovering from the stigma. Anyway basically “soccer” was the black sport, rugby the Afrikaner sport, and cricket the English sport. My love for cricket is strong because of this but I had no interest in football at all.
My father was a Man United fan and occasionally I watched a game or two with him. None of them really inspired me. I watched a Man U v Arsenal game in which van Nistelrooy got a bloody murderous tackle which made me decide that I was pro nobody but anti Arsenal. That perception has changed completely as I came to understand the game later.
Anyway it was only when I arrived at Varsity that a few mates encouraged me to watch Liverpool with them. I did so sort of non-committedly and didn’t feel much different. But then I watched one of the legendary comebacks that Liverpool are now famous for. The heart and spirit of the team blew me away, but more than anything else the belief of the fans was amazing.
I decided there and then that if those fans are willing to stand strong and proud, despite the awful situation their team found themselves in, then I wanted to be one of them. I’m now a Liverpool red through and through and will never be anything else.
On a side note, when I was first introduced to the game by my Varsity mates I joked that I was a Stoke supporter (Stoke were in the Championship at that stage). They all laughed and joined in on my support just for the giggles. Stoke are now in the prem and my respect for them has grown as they have. This team was really bad when I started half heartedly supporting them and I really believe that they can be great. So I stand by them just as any Liverpool fan would for the reds. They may not be my first team, but they have my support and it will not waiver. Unless they are playing LFC, of course
.
Now, I have been exposed to racism at a greater level than anyone else on this forum (except maybe Kahn who I believe is South African as well). I stand here to tell you that it is not funny. It is depraved, stupid and just plane evil. Racism has fueled my country for so long that we cannot let it go. It will only truly leave us when my generation is dead and those who rule did not experience Apartheid first hand.
I have no tolerance for racists. They disgust me to my core. Mostly because I see glimpses of the stupid things that we used to believe, that I used to believe. There is no justifying it, even if it was just done for some misguided attempt to be funny. It isn’t and it never will be. So just grow up or shut up.
Aquaman - February 9th, 2010 at 10:28 pm
Oh and …samlfc… I have some trivia for you. India have been beaten by an innings on their home soil on three occasions in the last 10 years. Name the teams who did so.

Retryboy - February 10th, 2010 at 3:39 am
Retryboy(browser being a pain)Chosen one-san jose has been doing really well at bilbao this season after we were going to recall him from his loan because he wasn’t getting games he has gotten in the team and stayed in it. 11 games in a row i think and people who hadn’t seen before have seen how good kelly is at RB he is even better at CB in my opinion. The attributes that skrtel and Kyrgiakos have between them these 2 have each. Aerially dominant, positionally sound, pace and tough tackling ayala is a good player too if still a little lightweight. Look at johnny evans at united he has 2 centre backs to get past one injury and he is in rafael is trusted at RB they don’t move players out of position to accomodate experience they trust the quality and have players in their proper position think we should do the same as our youngsters are just as good if not better remember Nemeth destroying pique once embarrassed him a year later pique was man of the match in the champions league final, Nemeth after scoring in 88% of reserve games and having an even better record for internationals sent on loan and we are looking to spend money on more strikers just don’t agree with the policy Nemeth and san jose are 21 now i think. Rafa just wants seasoned internationals yet the ones he buys still take months to adapt and are a risk don’t understand not taking the same risk for free with young talent. Agree with nick(welcome back) Kyrgiakos is prone to errors you don’t get to 30 and still be undiscovered as top quality. Big mistakes at lyon(2)spurs(2)Bolton(good recovery but better finish would have cost us a goal) and leaving us a man short with an out lawed tackle at Everton couple with him being untested against quality, pace or movement to me he still has a lot to prove. Sam-thanks i agree with Donovan wise head on young shoulders.
Retryboy - February 10th, 2010 at 3:52 am
On the racism subject every group suffers it and this country has become ridiculous in that to counteract it they say “for this job we need 3 black, 4 asian and 6 women so we have a fair spread. Sure the way to get rid of racism is to give the job to the best man/woman regardless of skin colour or religion. There was never any problems in my generations playgrounds its something the governments facilitate so don’t think we will ever truelly see the end of the disease until the governments start treating everyone equally and realise their methods are just as discriminatory as the idiots they are trying to safeguard against and each stupid rule they introduce only keeps the problem around longer. Aquaman i do have sympathy…being forced to watch cricket is something nobody should have to go through lol
Retryboy - February 10th, 2010 at 4:00 am
Donovan the forums a good idea still prefer it if everyone had to register the site would self police then. Like mark says we know its only a few idiots but it does ruin good debates intentionally a lot of the time also you can never get a true feel for public opinion if people post multiple times. My opinion on it anyway.
Aquaman - February 10th, 2010 at 11:19 am
Thanks for the sympathy Retryboy. Not really…
We too share the dreaded quota system in all our sports. Except soccer. Coincidence? Though you lot can be thankful for that as you’ve profited from it. *cough cough Trott and KP cough cough* Where would your cricket team be without our misguided government? Gotta admire their charity to a country in crisis if nothing else…
Donavan: I hope so. I must say that I am very proud that my country has not descended into vengeance thinking (at least not entirely, and if so its generally petty) so I do believe there is hope.
As for our birds. We’ve just got that natural ability to get the prettiest ones. What can we do?
THE CHOSEN ONE: I must say that you are an inspiration. Inter racial relationships are very rare in SA. I know that it can’t always be easy, but you’ve stuck with it. Good man. Have a drink on me. Errmm… Well, have a drink and pretend that its on me.

RETRYBOY i see your point however think again. i remember owen hargreaves playing a game on the right side of midfield, wayne rooney playing almost all season on the left side of midfield, gary neville playing right back and centre back, john oshea playing everywhere!!! I suppose only rafa will know if they are good enough and can play his system.
Lets look at lucas im an admirer of him, hes in the top 5 in the league for the most number of tackles and also the most number of passes statistically . I hear he was fantasic before he came to liverpool but I would call him a very good squad player and his best position is definately in front of the back four of which he did against everton and a few other games. thats where he will succeed at liverpool. he has all the attributes and more for that role. he lacks creativity but is a working machine. if im honest i can understand rafa playing him further forward to keep the team more cagey but it makes the team mless creative in that role relying more on gerrard dropping deeper to make things happen.
Back to my point , when your on a S..A.S mission and your the captain ,in choosing your team you want people who you know can do the job. experience is everything and more. their time will come and when it does theyll treasure it more.
wasnt voronin fantastic in germamy
gonzalas brilliant in spain
morientes still playing good football
robbie keane good at celtic lol or should i say spurs.
its liverpool fc and totally different. the manager lives or dies by his results and its his head but trust me i want those youngsters in to and cant wait.

Thanks Donavan and Retryboy for the kind remarks but i said it purely because i hate racism and it just makes everything an unhappy atmosphere around the world.
The upsetting thing is Racism will never go as someone will always step over the line and be racist…..people has choices and some people make the wrong choice and turn into something what they might regret later on in life…..i just hope the racist people find that out before its to late.
