John Terry has offered his thanks to Chelsea fans after admitting the supporters have been ‘quite incredible’ over the past two weeks.
The Chelsea skipper has been faced with allegations regarding his private life over the past fortnight, with reports claiming Terry had an affair with the ex-girlfriend of his former Blues team-mate Wayne Bridge.
He has been stripped of the captaincy of England as a result of the allegations after coach Fabio Capello deemed his decision to be in the best interests of the national team.
Terry has not commented on the allegations and played in front of his own fans at Stamford Bridge on Sunday for the first time since the stories broke.
The centre-half received a positive reaction from the Chelsea fans throughout the 2-0 win over title rivals Arsenal and he has thanked the club’s faithful for their support.
Emotional“On a personal note I would like to thank every single fan,” Terry told Chelsea TV.
“It’s been an emotional day for myself and how the fans have been with me over the last two weeks has been quite incredible.
“I didn’t expect that today and I would like to thank every single individual fan for the way they treated me.
“It was a great performance and, I mean it from my heart, I would like to thank everyone.” (Sky Sports)
Even though there is a very good case for no one to offer support to a man who cheated on teammates girlfriend and paid for her to have an abortion as a result, you can understand how fans would still want to show their allegiance to their leader, especially when that leader is a player who really does give his all for the cause.
John Terry is right to thank the Chelsea faithful for the way they rallied to his aid and one can only imagine that they will continue to chant his name when he gets a chorus of disapproval whilst playing away from home (no pun intended).
Whether you like it or not, a football fan’s job, or at least a large part of it, is to show your unwavering support to your club and its players and even if the support comes as a result of an off field affair that has left a very sour taste in the mouth (again no pun intended and certainly no Frankie Howerd style innuendo meant) I think it is right for Chelsea fans to back their embattled leader.
