Barcelona “flatly deny” they have reached an agreement with Cesc Fabregas which would see the Arsenal captain return to the Nou Camp at the end of the season.
Reports in Spain suggest Fabregas, who has always said he would love to play for Barca, has come to a verbal agreement with the Catalan giants and will sign a five-year contract in the summer.
However, Barca have released a statement rubbishing the reports.
It read: “Given the exceptional repercussions created by the stories that have appeared in different media with respect to an agreement with Arsenal Fc player Cesc Fabregas, Barca flatly deny that there have been any negotiations or agreements with the player.
“In accordance with FIFA regulations, FC Barcelona’s contract policy has always made it a priority to negotiate with the club of origin before making any particular agreement with the player.
“FC Barcelona wishes to stress that it has always maintained excellent institutional relations with Arsenal Fc.” (Independent)
Yes you read that correctly, your eyes are not deceiving you. Barcelona have stated that they are NOT trying to go behind Arsenal’s back to snap up the Emirates skipper and that they have NOT reached an agreement with Cesc Fabregas to return to the Nou Camp. Isn’t that a refreshing change of tack from the Catalan giants. I fully expect these statements to be null and void in a matter of days when they once again use their local rags to further attempt to unsettle the Spanish midfielder with a view to persuading him to make a move from the north London club.
I don’t think its a coincidence that the moment it is revealed that Arsene Wenger has taken such offence at the continued attempts by the La Liga champions to ‘tap-up’ Fabregas that he reportedly decided to make a formal complaint to FIFA on the matter and here we are barely 24 hours later and Barcelona are trying to smooth things over. It just goes to show that the Arsenal boss was right to bring this to the attention of the governing body who must surely have been noticing the repeated attempts by the Champions League holders to get their former youth player back.
