Manchester United steward sacked in row over banner
Manchester United’s owners have come under renewed attack from disgruntled supporters following news that one of the club’s longest-serving stewards was sacked for siding with the Glazer protestors. The Times reports that CES, the security firm employed by Manchester United on match days, gave Granville Boden, 53, his marching orders after he took back a banner that read “Love United, Hate Glazer”, seized from fans before kick-off during the Burnley match on Jan 16, and attempted to return it.
Boden, a steward with 19 years service at Old Trafford, reclaimed the banner at the end of the game with a view to giving it back to its owners. However, Boden was subsequently dismissed by CES, while four other stewards have reportedly been disciplined for wearing green and gold – the colours of Newton Heath, United’s original name when founded in 1878, that have been adopted to represent opposition to the Glazers.
Boden, who accepted why CES had felt the need to sack him, told the Times: “There is a lot of internal conflict between the staff and I think that conflict is only going to grow as the protests against the Glazers gather more momentum.
“There are a lot of staff at the club who are sympathetic to what the Manchester United Supporters’ Trust (MUST) are trying to achieve. I don’t regret anything I did.” (Daily Telegraph)
If anyone thought it was impossible for the Glazers to become even more loathed at Old Trafford then they may have to think again. This just smacks of idiocy. If I worked in PR, and thank the lord above that I do not, then I would have a quick word with the Manchester United owners and get them to think fast on their feet as this kind of petty action will only further serve to show just how despicable they are.
The American owners have basically purchased the club off the back of ‘bad debts’ and are making the club pay the interest on loans used to buy them in the first place. Its a hideous position to be in and can only really be rectified by a takeover.
Anyone who is unsure as to the haphazard nature with which the club is being run consider this. How can a club like Manchester United, possibly the biggest club in the world in terms of marketing and reach, currently be in debt to the tune of approximately £700m. Think about that for a moment. This is a club who at the very least would be breaking even for if a mammoth like the Premier League champions can not keep its head about water what hope does any team in the world have? The Glazers have simply lumped debt upon debt and set the club on a vicious circle of spiraling magnitude that will take an awful lot of money to resolve.
I have nothing but the utmost respect for those United fans who are trying to rid the club of these leeches that have no interest in the game whatsoever other than how they can milk the club dry for their own ends. Liverpool Football Club also finds itself with owners of a similar ilk and have their own battle on their hands and it would be nice to see both clubs come together in some fashion to make a joint protest against their respective owners when they next meet.
