“Appearances can be deceptive”- Why Crouch should have overtaken Heskey in race for England’s ‘target man’ role at the World Cup
He may have the physique to make Michael Phelps look like an ordinary human being, but Peter Crouch has consistently proven himself in the last few years to have the full array of skills required for a place in Capello’s England squad later this year.
The lofty striker has quite literally made a career of proving the many doubters wrong in overcoming the obstacles of his 6 foot 7 inches ‘could hide behind railings” frame. Years ago he was used as the running joke of English football, that if someone was mentioned to possibly represent England because of their size (for example the likes of Kevin Davies or Emile Heskey), then others would scoff “you might as well just put Crouch in the England team”. However 36 games and 18 England goals later and people have had to look for another target for their criticisms, with Crouch having taken over from where Owen left off as the man who’s always in the right positions to score.
After years spent proving his technical skill to force the “good feet for a big man” quote, the criticisms had more recently turned full circle to focus now upon a perceived lack of aerial strength, despite his height. Always a man to confound the critics though, Crouch’s move to Spurs in the summer has seen the appearance of a different player, with real physicality in the air. Almost every high pumped ball forward (and it is a tactic Spurs have relied on a lot, possibly even a little too much) is being won and nodded down into the dangerous areas around the edge of the box; for the likes of Defoe, Kranjcar and Huddlestone to gorge upon with shot after shot.
The Leeds game at Elland Road was the perfect example. Home boss Simon Grayson had specifically brought in Lubomir Michalik, the biggest and lumpiest of the Leeds defenders; who within half an hour had all but given up on any attempts to offer an aerial challenge to Crouch, who was integral to Spurs’ total of 22 shots on goal in the 90 minutes.
Though 5 goals in 24 league games may not exactly be screaming the words “English world cup starter”, Crouch’s ability to set up team-mates has him crucially perched in the top 10 (along fellow Spurs boy Aaron Lennon) for the most Premier League assists this season. With Heskey on an unconvincing 2 goals and just 1 assist after nearly 20 league games himself, he must surely now concede his position to the man who not only is a more prolific goalscorer and creator of goals, but also now has the strength to comfortably lead the England line and hold his own against any country in the world.
The simple difference between Crouch and many other ‘target men’ and the reason that he creates so many goals, is that his height allows him significantly to head the ball down. Meaning that when the ball is lumped up to him, Crouch’s headers regularly become deliberate and precise passes to tee up team-mates. It is the difference between a long and precise pass from a Beckham or a Scholes; and Andy Griffin or Robert Huth lumping it forward into space down the channels.
At the World Cup, almost no country will have a man capable of stopping Crouch, if he is given adequate service; while the thought of Crouchie nodding down around the edge of the box to ball-strikers of the quality of Rooney, Lampard and Gerrard in South Africa, is one that should have any England fan drooling with anticipation for this summer’s big tournament.

I am a Spurs fan and I almost cried when we bought Crouch. All that has happened is Spurs are spending 90 minutes hoofing the ball up front. Without Lennon, we just pump it forward, every kick. Crouch might as well be a post with a ball on the end that we can aim for. He has probably missed more opportunities than any other player at Spurs. Seriously, if he goes to the world cup, he should have to buy his own ticket. At Spurs he should ONLY be used as plan B, if we struggle he should be a second option. Crouch is not a plan A at any level above the Championship.
Only issue for England is there are no other real options. All of our best strikers could work for Willy wonka, and probably get adopted by a pigmy tribe while in Africa.

You talk of Crouch missing chances What about the games Defoe has cost us Rednap plays Defoe week in week out he has missed so many chances this season While Keane didnt set the world on fine i think he got a raw deal If he had a bad first half he was away for an early shower whereas Defoe can play crap forever and he stays on

Crouchy is only (and should be) a plan B player for Tottenham. Pav should be given a proper chance and given a run in games. IMO he (Pav) could not be any worse that what we have up front!!

Crouch is the most overrated striker i have ever seen a WHL. he’s immobility negates any sort of dynamic build up play, and his constant mis-control/juggling act to try and keep the ball always ends in losing possession.
He may be good enough for Portsmouth but he should be a plan C striker for any premiership side with aspirations for top 5.
If he (Crouch) starts next season as a first choice, then i cannot see Redknapp seeing out the season as manager.

He should go to the world cup rooney and defoe will be the starting partnership. He is a good player can set up a lot for others used to really annoy me when he was at liverpool that he can’t score with his head to save his life though

crouch and keane are bad finishers. defoe is just plain selfish and always shoots instead of passing. thats how he gets all the goals

Does anyone else think it’s absolutely absurd that we’re considering one of Crouch and Heskey for the World Cup? I question whether either has ever been a world class striker. I’ve never rated either. As a Spurs fan though he has scored as many goals as Defoe in the past 10 PL games. If Defoe is pairing Rooney, any England supporter should be very worried. There’s gotta be better options in England, aren’t there?

I’m happy with defoe and rooney for england beyond that there isn’t much else at all strikerwise crouch and bent are the best options and you are right its a shit state of affairs its not like there is any real quality english striker breaking through anywhere either. Heskey is ridiculous the striker that can’t score, carlton cole=donkey, owens a has been and thats about it.

That bloody Harry is destroying hte whole of the team. Getting rid of good players. Taking in mediocre players especially from Portsmouth. Not giving those players that he dislike, for whatever reason, a chance to play. Anyone who was not signed by him is basically ‘useless’. And now he criticises Bentley openly but have the bloody cheek to say that he holds no grudges. Redknapp is just finding a scapegoat for his own stupid frailties. And now, he is destroying the whole team morale by hittint Bentley openly. Just get rid of Harry and we will be fine.

I AGREE THAT ROBBIE KEANE AND ROMAN PAV. SHOULD AVE BEEN GIVEN MORE PLAT TIME. TOM HUDDLSTONE ALSO PLAYS WEEK IN AND OUT. CAN’T WE TRY KRANCJAER OR MODRIC WITH PALACIOS IN THE CENTRE. JENAS MUST GO. BALE MUST GO BACK TO LEFT WING WHEN BAE RETURNS.

lol at all you bitter Spurs fans who hate Redknapp.
Redknapp rescued your team when it was heading for relegation…
Juande Ramos was sinking WHL and Redknapp has turned you into top 4 contenders in a year or so…pretty impressive really!
Hes brought in Crouch, recalled defoe, aswell as Kranjar for something like 1.5 Million!
seriously 1.5 Million for Kranjar is an absolute steal…im sure many top 6 sides would have taken him!
You have finished in the top 6 twice in the last 10 years….so to say Redknapp is managing poorly is pure crap really!

Crouch should go to the WC as should Defoe, but neither of them should or will start over Rooney. Heskey doesn’t have the stats that measure upto Crouch but Heskey is a menace who breaks down defenders. If only he could stay fit is the biggest concern. Maybe it is time for him to follow Brad Friedel to yoga class!
I’m a Spurs fan and the combo of Crouch and Defoe has been good but if you goto the well enough times then it will go dry. We have a tendency to be one dimensional especially when we have the personnel to do better. Redknapp should show more faith in his squad, leave Jenas out of the game day squad. He has become a liability in the middle of the park. He strangely has digressed at such a rate it is quite horrifying. He and Huddlestone or Modric in the middle is a luxury that is lightweight and one that will always get exposed.
Utilise the likes of Gudjohnsen and Pavlyuchenko and show more faith in Danny Rose. Build the team around Modric and have in the middle with Palacios. If it means we play with one forward then so be it. We now have a team that gives us options.
If we don’t adapt then we will see many more matches like Wolves and Aston Villa where the opposition defends and waits for a counter-attack to strike.

Its about time some of these Spurs fans appreciated what they have in Crouch. Instead of which, they applaud lazy selfish players like defoe, never criticize ephemeral players like Modric, and blame Crouchy because the defence have no other ideas than to hoof the ball up to him!!
Its no coincidence that Spurs’ worst games this year were when Crouch was on the bench – does it not dawn on anyone that Defoe scores goals because Crouchie is there? Perhaps if Defoe was a little less selfish, passed the ball to others and looked up once in a while, Crouch’s goal tally would be much better. Rooney would love those balls put down for him – he has the vision ( and the determination) to make the most of them. Good teams have a variety of players – not just jinky little men who have nothing else to give. Crouchy is one of the hardest working footballers on the field – but gets little credit from some quarters of the Spurs fans – they even criticized him when he didn’t play against Wolves!!! Lasly Spurs fans – Pav does not want to play for you – he wants to go home
