Arsenal and Manchester United are heading for a summer transfer battle in the race to sign Neven Subotic.
The Borussia Dortmund defender has vowed to concentrate on his football ahead of the World Cup, but speculation from Premier League sides Arsenal and United will be difficult to ignore for the Serbian international.
The youngster spent two seasons at the University of South Florida between 2004 and 2006, representing the USA national youth teams at U17 and U20 level.
After impressing in the States and on a trial in Europe, Mainz 05 swooped for the 21-year-old and he made his debut against Bayern Munich for the already relegated side at the end of the 06-07 season.
Dubbed ‘the new Vidic’, Juventus, Real Madrid and Manchester City are also thought to be interested in the Dortmund youngster. Sir Alex Ferguson is a known admirer, but the Red Devils have already added Chris Smalling to their defence.
Arsene Wenger missed out on the Fulham youngster, and is keen to make the addition of a player who would be seen as the eventual replacement for William Gallas. Scout Gilles Grimandi has already travelled to watch the Serbian, although a £20 million price tag could be a stumbling block. (Give Me Football – Official PFA Website)
Arsenal have been trailing Neven Subotic for some time now and it appears the race is hotting up for the Borussia Dortmund centre back who has been likened to Nemanja Vidic and this summer could be the right time for the Emirates boss to clinch the addition of this talented Serbian.
With William Gallas only be offered a one year contract and with veteran Sol Campbell clearly very much in the autumn of his career it seems Arsene Wenger may well be keen on bringing in a young talent and Subotic could well be a good fit for the north London club.
With Thomas Vermaelen proving to be a very good purchase Arsenal could see the 21 year old Bundesliga man as another up and coming relative unknown who the Gunners could help build into the finished article. One thing is for sure the Arsenal defence has appeared more leaky than in recent years and the Arsenal fans will be calling for Wenger to spend cash this summer and a move for the £15m rated defender will surely be welcomed.
LONDON – Arsenal can still capture the Premier League title but probably need to win their remaining 12 matches of the campaign to do so, their Russian striker Andrei Arshavin said on Thursday.
Arsenal moved to within six points of leaders Chelsea on Wednesday when they beat Liverpool 1-0 at the Emirates Stadium, while Chelsea lost 2-1 at Everton and Manchester United drew 1-1 at Aston Villa.
With 26 matches played, Chelsea have 58 points, United are on 57, Arsenal have 52 with Liverpool on 44.
“Of course, the result is good for us, but if we want to be champions we have to win all our remaining games. It’s difficult to say whether it’s (do-able), but after these results, it looks real,” Arshavin said on his personal website.
“Back to the Liverpool game, I think that there were nearly equal teams playing. I liked the way we played.
“We were not afraid to play, the whole team was well co-ordinated. If I can say so, all the Arsenal players played the same football, that is we understood each other and combined.”
A header from Abou Diaby 18 minutes from time secured the victory but Arshavin had been replaced by then because of a leg injury.
He added: “It is hard to say how serious it is, I’ll have my leg scanned. I didn’t see the goal because I was in a room under the stands with the doctors and while we were looking for the TV remote, Diaby scored.” (Four Four Two)
There is no doubt that Arsenal have a lot of work to do in order to have a realistic shot at winning the Premier League again but I think that needing to win all their remaining 12 games is probably a great deal more than is needed. Chelsea and Man United will almost certainly have a sticky patch before mid May and Wenger just has to make sure they make the most of their relatively easy run in. Also Andrei Arshavin is proving to be a very amusing chap. Barely an interview doesn’t go without an amusing retort or quote from the Russian not least when in relation to the workings of his 50s style relationship with his wife.
