Soccer: Training - Manchester United May 20

Real Madrid believe they have won the race to sign Nemanja Vidic and that he will follow his close friend Cristiano Ronaldo to the Bernabeu at the end of the season.

AC Milan looked to be edging towards a deal for the unsettled Manchester United defender after leading a chase that also involved their city rivals Inter and Spanish champions Barcelona.

But Sportsmail understands he is bound for Madrid in a £20million transfer that will end an increasingly uneasy relationship with Sir Alex Ferguson.

The United manager has been less than impressed with Vidic’s longing for a move to southern Europe and its detrimental effect on his form this season.
Though the 28-year-old Serbia star has been troubled by injury, Ferguson has had misgivings about selecting him anyway when fit, due to concerns over the centre half’s concentration.
Resigned to sanctioning Vidic’s departure, Ferguson is prepared to accept £20m from Real and use it for reinforcements. (Daily Mail)

All the talk of Nemanja Vidic’s rocky relationship with Sir Alex Ferguson appear to have been totally created by a media swirl looking for a cheap story. Whilst its possibly true that the Serbian’s wife is not too keen on life in Manchester it is also true that the Old Trafford defender loves life at the Old Trafford club.

The 28 year old has become crucial to Manchester United’s slightly leaky defence and I see no reason why Ferguson would even consider selling such a fantastic player and see even less reason as to why he would wish to do business with a club, Real Madrid, who has consistently treated the Premier League side with such disrespect.

I don’t see Vidic leaving any time soon and even though Manchester United have brought in Chris Smalling I see that more as a long term solution to the ageing Rio Ferdinand rather than an attempt to cope with the potential exit of Nemanja.
