I’m pretty sure I know where you can file these rumours (i.e, the bin) but there are whispers on the wind (i.e, a couple of French and Spanish newspapers have run stories) that Everton midfielder Marouane Fellaini is close to finalising an agreement with Arsenal – with a four year deal on the cards in the summer.
Arsene Wenger is keen to add a bit of steel to his midfield ranks and the 22-year-old Belgian international is said to be the first name on the Arsenal manager’s end-of-season shopping list.
Can’t see it happening myself, Fellaini has been in superb form this season for The Toffees since being moved into a more defensive role at Goodison and I’m sure David Moyes would be loath to let his most effective ‘midfield enforcer’ leave the club just 18 months into a five year contract.
Fellaini is definitely the kind of player Arsenal need to focus on bringing in though. A bit of ‘nasty’ to go with their already over-abundant ‘nice’. (Who Ate All The Pies)
So could Arsenal do with an injection of steel in their midfield? There can be no doubting the ease with which the Belgian international has taken to Premier League football and the former Standard Liege man is now one of the most important players at Goodison Park. The 22 year old’s presence has bought more time on the ball for likes of Tim Cahill and when fit, Mikel Arteta and perhaps his wholehearted displays would give Cesc Fabregas even more room to express himself.
After arriving at Everton for a princely £12m, a fee that made many think that David Moyes had been ripped off, the now £22m rated battler has become a cult hero with Toffees fans for his ability to put in a tackle and score more than his fair share of crucial goals. Arsene Wenger is said to be a big fan and many sources appear to believe that the Emirates boss may well make a big money move to snap up the lanky midfielder.
David Moyes would of course be loathed to lose such a crucial player but may find it hard to keep the star and he could well join the likes of Wayne Rooney and Joleon Lescott in making a Merseyside exit if indeed the north London side put in a bid and potentially turn Fellaini’s head.
Many believe that Arsenal have not adequately replaced Mathieu Flamini in the defensive midfield role and that the likes of Alex Song or Denilson are still not quite at the standard that Wenger would like and perhaps a move for Marouane would be a very wise one to help beef up the Gunners central midfield area.
