Sir Alex Ferguson is believed to be tracking Palermo centre back Simon Kjaer.
Ferguson and assistant manager Mike Phelan were reported to be in Italy on a talent scouting trip to see Simon Kjaer in action for Palermo this week.
The Manchester United pair originally made the trip to Italy to watch their Champions League opponents AC Milan, who were the victors against Udinese at the San Siro.
The United boss is on the lookout for another centre back with Serbian defender Nemanja Vidi? looking increasingly likely to be moving to Barcelona in the summer.
Manchester United have had numerous injury problems in the centre of their defence with Rio Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidic, Wes Brown and Jonny Evans all sustaing substantial injuries at some point this season.

Manchester United are being linked with a cut price swoop for French international Karim Benzema with Real Madrid reportedly ready to do business at the end of the season. The 22-year-old made a stunning £30 million transfer to La Liga last summer as Florentino Perez marked his return to the Real presidency with several high-profile signings.
The former Lyon man has scored seven goals in 20 games for Manuel Pellegrini’s side this season and is due to face his former employers in the Champions League in midweek. However, having been promised regular first team football, the dynamic front man is thought to be underwhelmed by playing second fiddle to Argentine Gonzalo Higuain and former United man Cristiano Ronaldo.
Benzema could be snapped up for a figure in the region of £20 million although that figure could inflate should he star for France at the World Cup in South Africa. AC Milan are ready to battle Manchester United for the talented youngster although they are also keeping tabs on Wolfsburg’s Edin Dzeko. (Sport.co.uk)
Are Manchester United over reliant on Wayne Rooney in this post-Cristiano Ronaldo age, the answer can only really be yes. Would Sir Alex welcome another young talented central defender to go with the fast maturing Jonny Evans and newly purchased Chris Smalling, again the answer would probably be, why not.
Sir Alex would probably love to spend some cash this summer, but whether he can depends very much on just how much of a mess the Glazers can make at Old Trafford. Both Simon Kjaer and Karim Benzema could be a very wise additions, one has great potential whilst the other has already proved himself at the highest level and yet both at the right side of 23 and could be available for relatively cheap fees.
