Chelsea have continued to keep tabs on Anderlecht’s highly-rated 16-year-old striker Romelu Lukaku , according to a report in the Mail on Sunday.
Rob Draper writes: “Chelsea continue to monitor teenage Anderlecht striker Romelu Lukaku every week, even though his father, Roger, is insistent his 16-year-old son will not be leaving Belgium until he is 18.”
Draper adds: “Stamford Bridge scouts are the most regular at Anderlecht games to watch the youngster.”
Chelsea face competition from a host of major clubs in Europe for the signature of Lukaku, who is contracted to Anderlecht until the end of season 2011/2012. Arsenal, Real Madrid and AC Milan are also reportedly interested.Lukaku has been the sensation of Belgium football in 2009/2010, scoring 13 goals in 26 appearances for Anderlecht. The 6.3ft striker has also chipped in with three assists. (IMScouting)
Now £18m may well seem like a very steep price to pay for a teenager but then Romelu Lukaku doesn’t appear to be just like any other youngster plying his trade in European football. The rangy striker has burst onto the scene in the Belgian Jupiler league scoring 12 goals in his first 18 matches for Anderlecht and is already playing for the national Under 21 side despite being three months shy of his 17th birthday.
A raft of top flight clubs have been taking an interest in a player compared to Thierry Henry and indeed Arsenal have themselves been one of the frontrunners in the race for the forward’s signature but now it seems that Stamford Bridge may well be a viable option as well.
Carlo Ancelotti apparently likes the look of the starlet and is keen to add more fresh faces to his hugely talented squad, hence the signings last summer of Ross Turnbull and Daniel Sturridge, an added bonus of snapping up Lukaku is that at 16 he is able to fulfill the criteria of a ‘homegrown’ player just as long as he is signed up in the next six months or so and it is that fact that may see a host of clubs attempt to complete the signing of this highly regarded front man.
