WHEN Garry Cook courted Kaka, he became the laughing stock of world football.

But the sniggering has stopped. And now the Manchester City chief executive has turned his attention to Fernando Torres and Steven Gerrard, nobody should take him lightly.

The chase for fourth place in the Premier League won’t be decided at Eastlands today.

The clash between City and Liverpool is more a symbol of a seismic shift between a waning power beset by internal and financial problems and a club that knows no limits.

Even a defeat for Roberto Mancini’s side does not alter that landscape.

There are those at Anfield only too aware of the threat from City, not least to Liverpool’s two biggest stars.

After the false dawn of Thakskin Shinawatra, the pledges of owner Sheikh Mansour are proving to be no mirage.

That sends out a compelling message to both Torres and Gerrard – that they may have to re-evaluate their futures in the summer.

It’s not even a secret within the City corridors of power that the hierarchy are plotting a £140million double swoop for both Torres and Gerrard this summer.

City officials are already planning how they can pull off what would be one of the most audacious transfer coups of all time. (News of the World)

So having seen us come up against the “Mighty Manchester City” I can safely say there is no way in the world that either Anfield hero will make such a move, that being said I do not doubt that the megabucks Eastlands side wouldn’t make such an offer but to do so would simply be a big waste of effort from Roberto Mancini’s side.

Yes they managed to snap up some dissatisfied players last summer and they’re collection of mercenaries have had a pretty good season thus far but as far as being able to lure truly big names to Man City, I am afraid they are still a good year or three away from being able to do so.

Now the fear for me is that Messrs Hicks and Gilllett may see the colour of the money and consider taking such offers seriously. Obviously to do so would make the pair even more loathed, yes I do think that is possible, than they are now. We as a club are in a bit of a financial mess, possibly not as much as so arch rivals Man United, but still the American owners have left us with a mountain of debt but a quick fix in the shape of offloading out two prized assets would clearly be such a mindless decision that I do not think that even the Yanks would make it.

Ideally we will be able to bring in new talent in the summer but can hopefully do so without having to sell any player of worth from the Anfield squad. I do not think we are too far away from the leading three in the Premier League and what is needed is more strength in depth because a fully fit first eleven of Rafa’s choosing could right now give the likes of Man United, Chelsea and Arsenal a decent run for its money, its just that (and every Reds fans knows this) when important players are out injured we don’t have the kind of support on the bench we would like.

It will be one hell of a war for that final top four spot and today’s draw has let in Aston Villa and Tottenham again and there will be many twists and turns before the season is out.
