Manchester United are ready to make a new move for Spanish hot shot David Villa – if he goes up for sale at Valencia in the summer.
United chief Sir Alex Ferguson sent brother Martin – his top European scout – to watch Villa net twice against Getafa as the Old Trafford club updated their dossier on the superstar.
Ferguson wanted Villa last summer but his £45 million price tag put the deal off. However Dimitar Berbatov’s indifferent form has left the door open for a top-flight striker to join for next season.
Villa could be open to offers if Valencia fail to reach the Champions League and decide to cash in. For all of their troubles the decision to keep him has paid off this season.
United have funds to buy the right players – although there are reservations about Villa’s age and future sell-on value. However if he comes on the market at the right price Ferguson will be in.
Villa has opened the door to a potential move to an English club after the World Cup finals after angling for a preferred switch to a Spanish giant last summer. (Daily Mirror)
I guess any potential move from the Manchester United boss for any top notch target could have a lot to do with how much money the Old Trafford supremo is given by the Glazers, which given the huge financial meltdown the club appears to be in the middle of, could be a big problem. Sir Alex Ferguson however is reportedly looking for more striking talent to help beef up his front line.
Apparently Fergie is still not 100% sure of the benefits Dimitar Berbatov offers the side with the Bulgarian apparently not providing enough of a goal threat, leaving Wayne Rooney having to carry the lions share of the load, which currently he is doing with alarming ease.
This source suggests that David Villa’s age could be an issue but at 28 he is hardly over the hill so I am not sure that will be a factor in whether Manchester United make a move for the Valencia man, far more likely is that any valuation placed on the Spanish hit man could be vastly inflated but in today’s market £45m is a damn good price in my view and one well worth paying.
