Villa Park wide man definitely not going to Old Trafford, well not for now at least.
O’Neill has also shot down reports that a supposed offer from Manchester United for midfielder James Milner had caused tension between himself and Lerner.
“There was a story that I had fallen out with the chairman because of a supposedly imminent transfer of James Milner to Manchester United,” O’Neill said. “James would be worthy of playing in a side like that. I wouldn’t think for one minute that top clubs wouldn’t be interested in James Milner. He has been splendid for us this season but there is not one ounce of truth in the story. It is ludicrous.” (ESPN)
Martin O’Neill doesn’t mince does he. He has neatly nipped this rumour in bud, but will it bring an end to the speculation? Almost certainly not. Sir Alex Ferguson is reportedly a big admirer of James Milner and given the form shown by the England international over the past 18 months, expect a great many sides to be monitoring the former Leeds and Newcastle United man.
The 24 year old winger may well feel that he should make the step up to Champions League level and may deem Aston Villa’s failure to make up ground on the likes of Man City and Tottenham this term as something of a failure so who knows what may happen in the coming months. One thing is for certain I think he is not going to pull a Gareth Barry and demand a move in an underhand manner, but he may still have his head turned by the attention.
