Wenger eyes up new Emirates addition to replace bungling Spaniard.
Reports in Germany are stating that Arsene Wenger is set to make a move for £12m rated international keeper Manuel Neuer. The Emirates boss has become increasingly annoyed by the inconsistent performances of current number one Manuel Almunia and is therefore set to use part of his summer transfer war chest to invest in the highly rated Schalke goalie.
Manchester United have supposedly been monitoring the towering keeper for a while now with a view to snapping up the German international as a long term replacement for veteran Edwin Van der Sar but now Ferguson’s north London rivals need appears greater.
Many would have watched in horror at the way in which the Gunners keeper fumbled Kevin Phillip’s effort into the net that lost Arsenal two valuable point at Birmingham City only to then witness the Spaniards heroic efforts against Barcelona as the 32 year old was pivotal to keeping the score down and kept the Emirates side in the tie.
Manuel Neuer is considered one of the best in the business and his increasingly mature performances have helped Schalke to battle for a Bundesliga title as well as making him the likely number one choice for the upcoming World Cup in South Africa.
Whilst £12m may seem a large sum to invest in a custodian it is worth noting that at 24 he is still very young in goalkeeping terms and has a great deal of potential and already has a great deal of experience both at domestic and international level.
