Martin O’Neill sets his sights on bringing experienced White Hart Lane marksman to Villa Park,
Martin O’Neill will make a concerted effort to snap up Tottenham striker Robbie Keane this summer. The Irishman is currently on loan at Celtic where he is scoring goals with alarming ease even though the Glasgow club are struggling for form. Harry Redknapp appears happy to let the 29 year old leave White Hart Lane but will only do so for the right price which would reportedly be a fee in the region £10-12m.
With Jermain Defoe, Peter Crouch and Roman Pavlyuchenko to call upon for attacking options Tottenham could probably afford to cash in on Keane but may feel that selling to a rival club a stretch to far and would undoubtedly prefer to take the cash from the SPL outfit only Celtic are apparently strapped for cash.
Aston Villa boss O’Neill has stated today that the club could indeed consider selling a major player to finance moves in the transfer market.
“What you would do is see if you can come up with some other ways, maybe through the scheme here with the younger players coming through, maybe with a bit of trading here and there, maybe taking a risk with a major player to be transferred [out] to sort things out. (Various)
The Villa Park outfit still has hopes of clinching a Champions League spot and if they did indeed do so then funding for transfers such as these would presumably be a lot easier to come by. Randy Lerner has made it clear that he will not simply bankroll the club in the way that has happened at Chelsea and Man City and the American owner will be looking to O’Neill to invest wisely and if the midlands side can snap up Robbie Keane then it would be a very intelligent signing indeed.
Keane is a proven Premier League goalscorer and one who will clearly be considering his options in the summer.
