Wenger set to take a chance on no nonsense defender who will cost Emirates outfit nothing.
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has set his sights on soon to be out of contract Real Madrid defender Christoph Metzelder this summer. The Emirates manager is looking for new defensive additions as he looks set to offload Mikel Silvestre and could also consider not renewing deals for veteran centre backs William Gallas and Sol Campbell.
German international Metzelder is not likely to be offered a new deal by Manuel Pellegrini who deems the former Borussia Dortmund man as surplus to requirements. The 29 year old has vast experience and is looking for a move that could help secure first team football so that he can try to force his way back into Joachim Loew’s international reckoning.
A combination of a lack of first team football, average form and niggling knocks meant that Christoph failed to make the starting eleven for any of Germany’s World Cup qualification matches.
The towering centre back is known to suffer from injury problems and has only managed three starts at the Bernabeu side this term. Any move for Metzelder will depend on the determined no nonsense defender being able to prove that he is not a liability.
Given that such a move would cost nothing the risk would at least be nullified and Wenger is ready to offer a short term deal this summer to snap him up.
