Arsene Wenger is ready to beat a plethora of interested parties to snap up Roma defender Philippe Mexes. The Arsenal boss is looking to bring in new defensive options to replace aging or soon to be out of contract members of his Emirates squad and is hoping to persuade French international Mexes to make the move to north London.
The 28 year old former Auxerre man is now in his sixth season at the Stadio Olimpico and has been a key member of Claudio Ranieri’s title challenge but sources suggest that the lanky centre back is ready to leave the club if they fail to overhaul perennial Serie A champions Inter Milan. The new Roma boss has on occasion overlooked the experienced Toulouse born man and this has led to many believing a move could be on the cards.
Wenger is ready to offload veteran defenders William Gallas, Mikel Silvestre and Sol Campbell as he looks to inject a younger look to his back line and whilst Mexes is in his late twenties he is extremely fit and has the physical stature to suit the Premier League.
Mexes has a year left to run on his contract and many clubs have expressed an interest in making a move for the Roma man, not least Arsenal’s arch rivals Tottenham.

There are some mugs who dont have a clue. Gallas over Mexes…One of the many reasons France flopped at the world cup. Domenech may not have picked him because he didnt like his star sign ffs. Mexes missed 2 world cups and euros because of that idiot. I would have him top 3 maybe higher on current form this season. Last season he got dropped and maybe that was the wake up call he needed. Because this season he is romas standout player and for my money the best defender in Italy. So to get a player like this for free or on the cheap is unreal value. Class on the ball, in the air and positioning sense means he doesnt charge about like a headless chicken
