Goals from Frederic Piquionne and Kevin Prince Boateng secured a famous win for Portsmouth over Tottenham and hands the Fratton Park side an FA Cup Final showdown with Chelsea.
A game that began in stuttering fashion sparked into life with four goals in five first half minutes. The Eastlands outfit, looking to lay claim to fourth spot, went two goals up with goals from Carlos Tevez and Nedum Onuoha. Cameron Jerome then immediately replied for the away side.
Emmanuel Adebayor then restored the two goal lead and the second half saw Manchester City play some very attractive football and they deservedly scored a fourth when Onuoha scored his second before Adebayor completed the rout.
Liverpool fell further back from the top four race with this goalless draw at Anfield against Fulham. Rafa Benitez’s side really deserved all three points as they enjoyed the majority of the possession and put a typically determined Craven Cottage side under a great deal of pressure and had many chances to win the game.
Without goal machine Fernando Torres to call upon Rafa had to hope the likes of David Ngog and Ryan Babel could open up the west London side’s defence but time and again they were denied.
The draw leaves the Merseyside outfit with a mountain to climb if they are to clinch fourth spot.
Ajax annihilated Venlo at the Amsterdam Arena as they put pressure back on league leaders FC Twente. Luis Suarez and Marko Pantelic both scored hat-tricks.
Sir Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United side seemed out of sorts as they attempted to take top spot from Chelsea. The Old Trafford side had plenty of possession but had very few real chances. What chances they did have were either wasted or saved by Paul Robinson who saved from both Luis Antonio Valencia and Dimitar Berbatov.
The draw means that United are still behind Chelsea and the west London club also have a game in hand.
Wolves grabbed another crucial point from this Molineux fixture against Stoke City. The draw takes Mick McCarthy’s men six points clear of the relegation zone.
