Anfield man hopes to put nightmare season behind him ahead of World Cup bonanza.
Whilst its true that Javier Mascherano hasn’t exactly covered himself in glory at Liverpool this season it is also correct to state that on his day the Argentine captain is one of the best defensive midfielders in the world. The 25 year old is now a crucial part of Diego Maradona’s plans and a player who acts as a fulcrum in the middle of the national team.
Even though Argentina struggled to make it to South Africa, needing to win their last fixture to confirm qualification, they do have the backbone of a truly wonderful team. They have a string of world class talents up front which makes Mascherano’s terrier like role in the proceedings that bit more important.
In many ways it would be fair to state that if the former West Ham man is not having a great game then nor with the side he leads and vice versa so no doubt Maradona will be counting on the battler to be at his best next month.
