White Hart Lane defender who can barely train signs big money contract to stay until 2012.
Ledley King has signed a new contract to keep him at Tottenham until 2012 with Harry Redknapp describing the centre-back as a world-class defender and a “freak”.
The 29 year-old suffers from a persistent knee condition which limits the amount of time he can train and play. As a result, his schedule is carefully managed at Tottenham. He has managed twenty appearances this season, including more Premier League matches than England skipper Rio Ferdinand .
King has been so impressive when he has played that he has forced his way into Fabio Capello’s provisional World Cup squad of thirty players.
The one club man has now signed a new deal to remain at White Hart Lane until 2012 and will receive £4million a year.
King commented, “I am delighted to have signed a new contract with Spurs.
“I have been here since I was a schoolboy and I could never see myself going anywhere else.
“This is where I want to continue playing my football.
“We’ve got the prospect of Champions League football to look forward to next season and with the quality of players we have I believe we are on the brink of something big.
“It is an exciting time for the club with a new training ground being built and plans for a new stadium.
“I am enjoying my football and I want to be a part of what is happening here.”
Meanwhile, Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp was full of praise for King, saying, “Ledley is the only player I know who doesn’t train all week, turns up on a Saturday and looks like a world-class defender. He is an absolute freak.” (IMScouting)
You have to hand it to Ledley, I mean you really do as he simply can not walk to you to take anything, the one club man has been immense this term. Although injury restricted the centre back to just 19 Premier League starts he still did enough to win a place in Fabio Capello’s provisional World Cup squad, a place he richly deserves.
We all know that the 29 year old has problems with his knees, problems that greatly affect the defenders ability to play two games in quick succession but that does not lessen his ability to do a fantastic job both for club and country.
