David Bentley Spurs FA Cup Semi Final 2009/10

Tottenham winger David Bentley is in the sights of Aston Villa boss Martin O’Neill.

The People says Villa are tracking Tottenham star Bentley but face competition from Everton.

Both were in for the 25-year-old when he quit Blackburn two years ago, but he opted instead to move to White Hart Lane.

Bentley, however, has not always seen eye to eye with manager Harry Redknapp and, despite an excellent second half of the season, knows he will struggle to hold down a regular spot in the first team next term with Aaron Lennon back from injury.

Spurs would ask for a fee of around £10m for a player who cost them £15m and Lerner would sanction a move providing O’Neill can offload some players. (The People as reported on Tribal Football)

There is no doubt that David Bentley had a great run at the end of last season and must have loved having an extended run in the first team but the midfielder knows that next term he may well end up starting the season from the bench and as such he may well consider his options.

Harry Redknapp appeared to be ready to sell the former Arsenal man last summer but perhaps a big bid wasn’t forthcoming and the spate of good form may well help us get the majority of what we paid for him in the first place.

The attacker on his day can be awesome, I remember watching him in action back in February at Elland Road when he was on fire and showed what all the fuss was about during his Blackburn Rovers days. It would be sad to see him leave but at the same time at 25 he won’t want to sit on the bench, he clearly has England ambitions but may not realise them whilst waiting for injuries to provide him with a way back into the first team. After all Redknapp won’t consider Bentley as first choice unless someone is off form or out with an injury and that may well spur him onto leave the club.
