Dutchman decides the time is right to play mind games with former boss.
Bayern Munich’s Arjen Robben says his former Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho is only interested in winning and does not care about his teams’ style of play.
Robben faces his old manager when Munich play Mourinho’s Inter Milan in Saturday’s Champions League final.
“He puts out a winning team, it doesn’t matter if it’s done with nice football or not,” winger Robben told BBC Sport.
“The philosophy at Bayern is the coach [Louis van Gaal] wants to win games by playing nice football.”
The 26-year-old added: “As a player you want to play and enjoy the game, that’s also an important part.” (BBC Sport)
Well it had to start somewhere. The typical pre-match mind games will now surely start in earnest after this somewhat pointless attack on Jose Mourinho’s will to win at all costs, something that is surely not that bad a characteristic to have.
The Inter Milan boss has been labeled with this brush for some time now. When he was at Stamford Bridge he had some detractors who did not like his style of play but I can guarantee that very few of those doubters would have been Chelsea supporters.
The success that the Portuguese manager has achieved wherever he has held a job says it all. Arjen Robben is right. The San Siro boss doesn’t care how he wins the Champions League title this Saturday, just as long as he does so. Isn’t that what every fan wants above all else? I am sure Jose will lose no sleep over these comments and will instead order one of this Inter players to play very close attention to the flying Dutchman! In other words expect the first caution of the game to occur for a foul on Robben.
