Mourinho reportedly makes first signing as soon to be Bernabeu boss.
Real Madrid have put pen to paper on a €40 million deal for Benfica winger Angel di Maria, according to radio station TSF.
The Argentina international has long been linked with a move to the Santiago Bernabeu after an impressive season at Benfica, both in domestic competitions and in the Europa League.
Reports of an impending switch to the Spanish capital club by Di Maria have intensified after Inter boss Jose Mourinho, who is an admirer of the 22-year-old, became the red hot favourite to assume the reins of the Merengues.
The Portuguese radio station claims that, after signing Di Maria, Real will now put their focus on Benfica colleague David Luiz, for whom negotiations are believed to be at an advanced stage already.
TSF also state that Benfica could receive a player from Real Madrid in return, with centre-back Ezequiel Garay and winger Royston Drenthe both on the table. (Goal.com)
So there you have it. Real Madrid clearly were unhappy to see Barcelona snap up Valencia goal machine David Villa and have decided to begin their summer signing marathon now. This source, and others, believe the deal to bring Argentine international Angel Di Maria to the La Liga giants is done.
The 22 year old clearly has an abundance of ability and tons of potential but the fact he has not played a single minute in one of the big four European leagues (Serie A, Premier League, La Liga or the Bundesliga) makes this fee a little inflated but then Real Madrid are never the kind of club to worry too much about how much they pay for a player. Expect Jose Mourinho, who seems destined to move into Manuel Pellegrini’s post, to continue to add to his Bernabeu squad.
