White Hart Lane boss linked with mixed bag of defensive talent.
Tottenham target defenders Micah Richards and Curtis Davies
Tottenham have been linked with Manchester City right-back Micah Richards and Aston Villa centre-back Curtis Davies.
The Daily Mail reports that Spurs manager Harry Redknapp is set to make a £7 million move for 25 year-old Davies, who has dropped down the pecking order at Villa Park behind Richard Dunne, Carlos Cuellar and James Collins.
Redknapp has no shortage of centre-backs at White Hart Lane, but with Ledley King a constant fitness concern due to his knees and Jonathan Woodgate a long-term injury absentee, Tottenham are in the market for defensive cover.
It has been suggested that Redknapp may be willing to offer Jermaine Jenas as part exchange, and it is thought Martin O’Neill would be interested should James Milner join Man City.
Spurs are also reportedly in the hunt for 21-year-old full-back Richards. The Sun claims a £9m offer is on the cards, providing Tottenham can offload the likes of Alan Hutton, Robbie Keane and Jenas from their books. (Telegraph)
It seems we attract speculation of new arrivals even when they are not really needed but this latest bit of rumour wizardry comes from a source I would call respected, Daily Telegraph, albeit they are in effect just repeating what they have read from less reputable red tops.
So the players named. Well I can’t for one moment believe that Harry has any interest in Curtis Davies, I mean I certainly have no interest in the former West Brom and current Aston Villa man. He is pretty damn poor in my opinion and no better than every centre back we already have, and we have a few.
Yes we have injury concerns with most of those available but hell thats no reason to link us with a player who doesn’t even get playing time at Villa Park. So from poor we move to decent.
Micah Richards is a quality player, at least he was a couple of seasons back. Now he isn’t quite so assured and spring he had in his step under Sven Goran Eriksson and Mark Hughes appears to have lessened somewhat. If we could get him for £9m then I would say “why not”.
Anyway the summer continues and we Tottenham fans continue to dream of the season ahead and what better way to do so than to look forward to watching a World Cup with a myriad of our players on show. At last count I calculated we should have 10 White Hart Lane stars in action. Good luck to them all!
