Its a question that will rub some up the wrong way but surely its a fair debate to begin. Steven Gerrard has had arguably the worst season in many a long year and whilst he is clearly on his day one of the best players in his position in Europe is it also worth noting that it hasn’t been ‘his day’ for about nine months.
The 29 year old is of course an Anfield hero and is adored by all Liverpool fans but if those fans were being totally honest for one second and not looking at the issue from a Reds fans perspective would they really feel that the midfielder has done enough in the past year to warrant a nailed on place in Fabio Capello’s starting eleven.
Lets take his performance against Mexico. You could see Gerrard really try to get himself in the game and you can’t fault him for his efforts but what did he actually contribute? Also why on earth did he dive anytime anyone got near him? Most will argue that he is the type of player who can make things happen and that he can spark something out of nothing but at the same time you would be hard pushed to remember him doing so on a regular basis for his country.
Don’t get me wrong there are undoubtedly other big name players who similarly haven’t lived up to their reputations in a long time, Rio Ferdinand being one that leaps to mind, but this is simply a question in relation to the Liverpool captain.
So if for arguments sake Fabio had an entirely fit list of players to pick from would Stevie G really deserve to be named, or equally even with the players that are available does Gerrard deserve to be on that teamsheet?
