COS contributor Jose Dean looks at what could go wrong at the Bernabeu.
1) Clash of Ego
Ronaldo and Mourinho, two figures both known for their ego. What happens when Ronaldo gets more media attention than Mourinho? Mourinho will do something contreversial. Then Ronaldo will need the attention back. The concentration on football will turn to the media.
In the midst of all this, Barcelona will have less pressure than they did last year, since they did not win every trophy, as well as the addition of arguably the best striker in the world. Whilst Real Madrid are working harder on the media than on the pitch, Barcelona will cruise.
3) Mourinho’s mindset
Mourinho has stated he doesn’t mind 1-0 wins. Real Madrid are more likely to have a 3-2 or 4-3 than a 1-0 in past years, and I don’t know how he will be able to create a defense that matched what he had in Milan and Chelsea, which will cause some problems. Despite Milan’s impressive goal scoring record, he is still a defensive minded manager.
The pressure is way too high for Los Blancos to deal with. After spending huge amounts of cash on players and now a huge amount on the manager, if things start to go wrong it would not surprise me if all hell broke loose. Last year, they were arguably favorites despite Barcelona winning every trophy possible. Tension will be too high with all the anxiety from fans, media and now the added pressure of Jose Mourinho.
